The Ismaili Imamat and Focused On Nature (FON) joined partners in Paris this week for the official inauguration of Mission Neptune, a new global initiative launched at last year’s UN Ocean Conference in Nice under the patronage of the President of the French Republic and in support of the European Ocean Pact.

Mission Neptune brings together partners from across sectors to advance ocean exploration, observation and science-based governance. By bringing together scientific programmes, research fleets, data infrastructures and outreach capabilities, it seeks to connect ocean discovery with informed decision-making and collective action.

The partnership with Mission Neptune follows on from the agreement signed between the Ismaili Imamat and the French Republic in July 2025 to cooperate on a range of issues including environmental protection and the fight against climate change.

Ismaili CIVIC | COOL Catalyst

On 6 June, 2026 Ismaili CIVIC Southeast Asia hosted its first Climate Adaptation Workshop at our centre, with participants from Ismaili CIVIC volunteers, NUS, and Geylang residents.

They studied methodolgies and case studies including Tuas, Bali, Taichung and Queenstown.

They then applied learnings and studied Geylang, one of Singapore's most heat-vulnerable neighbourhoods mapping climate risks across six elements: Stake, Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, Impacts, and Adaptation.

Key learning: adaptation works through two pathways — reducing exposure and reducing vulnerability. This case study is the foundation of the COOL Catalyst @ Geylang programme.

Global volunteer effort marks major milestone in environmental stewardship.

In just over one year, the Ismaili Muslim community's Roots for Change initiative, spearheaded by Ismaili CIVIC in collaboration with Global Encounters, has reached a significant milestone: over one million trees planted worldwide, through volunteer-led environmental activities across multiple regions and ecosystems demonstrating the power of collective action in addressing climate change and advancing environmental stewardship.

Launched during the Global Encounters Festival 2025 in Dubai, the initiative set out to support tree planting, ahead of Earth Day (22 April) 2026 as part of broader sustainability efforts across the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

Volunteers across 17 countries participated in planting and stewardship activities adapted to local environmental and community contexts, including mangrove planting, community greening, agroforestry support, and landscape rehabilitation initiatives.

“As stewards of Allah’s creation, we are called to leave the world better than we found it,” said Malik Talib, Chairman of the Ismaili Leaders’ International Forum. “One million trees, planted by tens of thousands of hands across the globe, reflects what is possible when a community is united by purpose, guided by values, and moved to act. This spirit of service will carry this work forward for generations to come.”

The campaign’s reach was supported through partnerships and local environmental initiatives coordinated by Ismaili CIVIC.

On 17 May 2026, over 1,200 Penangites came together at Padang Kota Lama for the Charity Run/Walk for Children Cancer 2.0 — a powerful reminder of what community, compassion, and collective action can achieve.

The 5KM fun run was filled with energy, encouragement, and a shared commitment to supporting children battling cancer. While the heart of the event was always about participation and giving back, it was inspiring to see members of our community leading from the front with tremendous spirit and determination.

A special congratulations to Sohail Khan for crossing the finish line as the first finisher overall, alongside outstanding performances by Aftab Ali, Khuja Rehmat, Fawad Ahmed, Azmin Saduruddin, and Altaf Hussain, all of whom safely finished within the top ten out of 1,200 participants.

Most importantly, we are proud of every individual who showed up this morning to support a meaningful cause. Beyond the results and the run itself, today was about standing together for something bigger than ourselves.

On 11 and 12 May, Kenya and France co-hosted the Summit in Nairobi.

Co-chaired by President William Ruto and President Emmanuel Macron, the Summit brought together heads of state, business leaders, innovators and civil society to build partnerships for innovation and growth across the continent.

For more than a century, AKDN has worked with governments and communities in Africa to strengthen institutions, build economic capacity and improve the quality of life.

In Kenya, where AKDN’s engagement spans over 100 years, the Network reaches more than 27 million people with over 14,000 staff working across health, education, economic development and environmental stewardship.

Since the signing of a Partnership Convention in 2008, France – mainly through the AFD - Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Proparco, its private sector financing arm – and AKDN have collaborated on more than 60 projects across 20 countries, with French funding exceeding $584 million and joint investment surpassing $1 billion.

In health, AFD has provided more than $120 million in financing to AKDN in the region, supporting the expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, the upgrading of hospitals in Mombasa and Kisumu and the establishment of the Heart and Cancer Centre in Nairobi.

In 2025, AKDN, AFD and the Gates Foundation launched the East Africa Comprehensive Cancer Project, a $12 million initiative to combat women’s cancers in Tanzania and Kenya expected to benefit approximately 7.4 million people. Beyond health, the partnership extends across education, financial services, tourism and agriculture.

On 10 May, AKDN hosted a reception with the Paris Peace Forum and the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs at the Aga Khan University campus in Nairobi.

On 12 May, AFD, AKF, France and the Ismaili Imamat signed a memorandum of understanding to advance the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems and regenerative agriculture in Tanzania.

As the Africa Forward Summit convened under the theme “Partnerships for Innovation and Growth”, the AKDN-France collaboration showed what sustained, values-driven partnership can achieve.

Since its beginnings in 2022, the Ismaili CIVIC Garden has grown into more than a green space, it is a living expression of care, stewardship, and shared responsibility.

Using a blend of soil-based and hydroponic growing methods, volunteers cultivate fresh produce in an efficient and sustainable way. This season, the garden yielded an additional 40 kilograms of harvest, which were donated to support community members in need.

What began as seeds and nutrient streams has blossomed into nourishment for both body and spirit — a reminder that small, collective efforts can cultivate dignity, wellbeing, and hope for all.
