Lions Roaring with Rays of Hope: Supporting 200 Flood-Affected Students at SK Bawang K9, Paitan, Sabah

Date of Activity: 31 March 2026

Organised by: Lions Club of Penampang Host, in collaboration with JCI Kota Kinabalu,4X4 PENAMPANG & ST.JOHN AMBULANCE

On 31 March 2026, Dr. Randolf (Organising Chairman and President of Lions Club of Penampang Host) and Mr. Aldric Colin Thien (Vice President, representing JCI Kota Kinabalu) undertook a dedicated humanitarian mission to the remote and flood-devastated Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bawang K9 in Paitan, Sabah.

Departing from Penampang at 6:00 a.m., the team travelled approximately 250 kilometres through challenging terrain to reach the isolated school, which serves around 200 students. They delivered essential relief items, including books, stationery, clothing, and other learning materials urgently needed by the students and teachers following the severe flooding that struck the Paitan district in February 2026.

The floods caused extensive damage to the school, with reports indicating that nearly 90% of its infrastructure and facilities were affected. Classrooms, teaching resources, workbooks, and electronic devices for educational purposes were either destroyed or rendered unusable. The school has also faced prolonged challenges due to the lack of electricity, further disrupting teaching and learning activities in this already vulnerable rural community.

Upon arrival, Dr. Randolf and Mr. Aldric were warmly received by the school’s teachers and students, who welcomed them with open arms and heartfelt smiles despite the ongoing hardships. The genuine appreciation shown by the school community underscored the critical importance of timely support in restoring a sense of normalcy and hope for the affected children.

This initiative forms part of the Lions Club’s ongoing commitment to community service, particularly in reaching remote areas where government and other assistance may take longer to arrive.

The contributions of books and clothing will directly ease the financial and logistical burden on the school and families, enabling students to resume their education with greater confidence and dignity.

*The success of this project would not have been possible without the generous support and contributions from all donors, sponsors, club members, and partners. We extend our deepest gratitude to every individual and organisation that contributed resources, time, or encouragement toward this meaningful cause. Your kindness has truly brought rays of hope to the students of SK Bawang K9*.

Roar! Roar! Roar!

A small visit. Five households. Many stories of resilience.

KFB40 Food Aid Project – Kg Inobong, Penampang

14 March 2026

Members of the Lions Club of Penampang Host visited Kg Inanam, Penampang to deliver KFB40 food assistance to five households identified as needing support within the community.

Present during the visit were President Dr Randolf, Secretary Melvin Disimond, Treasurer Leena Toyoi and PP Callistus Majalang.

The households we met reflected the many realities within our community — elderly grandmothers caring for young grandchildren, and families raising young children while managing daily economic pressures.

During our visits, parents quietly shared their pride in the achievements and talents of their children. At the same time, we were greeted by inquisitive five-year-olds who wanted to know who we were and why we had come, adding a light and human moment to the afternoon.

The KFB40 initiative continues to provide practical food support to families who may be quietly struggling, especially as the cost of living continues to rise.

We would also like to acknowledge the corporate sponsor supporting this CSR initiative, whose partnership enables Lions to reach communities and bring meaningful relief to families in need.

Lions Clubs Deliver Hunger Relief to 40 Penampang Families Affected by Floods and Landslides
16 November 2025 | Penampang, Sabah

The Lions Clubs of Labuan Mandarin, KK Damai, and Penampang Host jointly carried out a Hunger Relief project today to support 40 families (140 individuals) displaced by the floods, landslides, and slope failures caused by the heavy rains in mid-September 2025.

Currently housed at the PSS ILMAN Institut Latihan Mahkamah Anak Negeri, Kg Kibabaig, the affected families — consisting of 97 adults and 43 children, including 5 infants — are awaiting relocation under Perumahan SMJ or other suitable arrangements after their homes were declared structurally unsafe.

This humanitarian initiative, with a total project value of RM15,400, provided 40 food packs funded through contributions from the recent Lions Bazaar 3.0. Included within the project value are electric rice cookers and electric jug kettles, supplied as post-flood household aid funded by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) through District 308-A2, which also supports other flood-affected families in Penampang.

Additional contributions were received from D**g Sin Food Sdn Bhd, Jiabao Sdn Bhd, and the Lions Clubs of Labuan Mandarin and KK Downtown, strengthening the support extended to the families.

The project was led by Organising Chairperson President Alice Chin (LC KK Damai) with Co-Chair President Dr Randolf P. Tsen (LC Penampang Host).

Remarks by Organising Chairperson President Alice Chin

Speaking at the event, OC Alice expressed the collective spirit behind the project:

> “On behalf of the organising clubs, we extend our care and solidarity to all families affected by the recent floods and landslides. The funds raised through Lions Bazaar 3.0 made it possible to prepare and deliver food packs to forty families. We know this may not meet every need, but we hope it brings some comfort as they rebuild their lives.

We are deeply honoured by the presence of our District Governor, who took an early flight from Miri to be with us. We also thank our sponsors — Shoon Fatt Biscuit & Confectionery Sdn Bhd, Gains Global Fit, Food Town Supermarket, and other supporters — and all Lions members for their hard work and teamwork. As Lions, we will continue to serve wherever help is needed.”

Remarks by District Governor Dato’ Winnie Lee

District Governor Dato’ Winnie Lee, who served as the Guest of Honour, highlighted the significance of the effort:

> “In September, Penampang faced one of its most difficult periods. Homes were damaged, roads were cut off, and families were forced to leave everything behind. For them, every act of help matters.

This joint Hunger Relief Project is more than a distribution of essentials. It is a message of solidarity — a reminder that these families are not forgotten, and that the Lions community stands with them. To every Lion who contributed time, effort, or resources, thank you. Let us continue to serve because our community needs us.”

District and Club Leadership in Attendance

The event was honoured by the presence of:

District Governor Dato’ Winnie Lee, Guest of Honour

2nd Vice District Governor Alyssa Lim

Cabinet Secretary Lanice Fo

Cabinet Treasurer Galen Low

Zone Chairpersons Regina Sulit and Jason Hing

District Chairpersons Ling Ngar Yieng (who travelled from Kuching) and Harry Vun

President Connie Ting (LC KK Lintas), Organising Chairperson of Lions Bazaar 3.0

The Lions Clubs expressed appreciation to all sponsors, partners, members, and volunteers for their cooperation and service. Despite their challenging circumstances, the families at ILMAN continue to demonstrate resilience and strong mutual support.

This initiative reflects the Lions’ ongoing commitment to community relief and humanitarian service. We Serve.
