In Memoriam: Valery Nikitich Rukhledev, Former ICSD President (1948–2026)
Today, on 9. April 2026, Valery Nikitich Rukhledev, the ninth President of the ICSD (2013–2018), passed away.
A native of Krasnoyarsk Krai, he attended schools for the deaf in Novokuznetsk, Russia, and Odesa, Ukraine, before earning a pedagogy degree from Odesa University. A multifaceted athlete, he was the only deaf competitor to win gold medals in both judo (1972 European Championships) and sambo (1971 USSR Championship). He claimed six Deaflympics gold medals in wrestling, earning recognition as one of the ten top ICSD/Deaflympics Athletes of the Century. Rukhledev was also a prominent public and political figure at national and international levels, a longtime leader in deaf sports within Russia, and the Soviet Union/Russia delegate to CISS Congresses from 1987 to 2013. He served as a former board member of the European Deaf Sports Organization and as ICSD President from 20 September 2013 to 2018.
In 2017, he was awarded the ICSD Medal of Honor, which was revoked in 2023 following his final conviction for corruption and imprisonment in Russia. Despite these events, the ICSD remembers him with respect.
The ICSD extends its deepest condolences to his family and the Russian deaf sports community.
