Protecting our marine ecosystems starts with the people who know them best.

At TIC, our mooring line and buoy installation project in Mersing isn't just about hardware—it’s about community-driven conservation.

We kicked off the process with Visitor Use Management (VUM) consultations, working directly with local boat operators to align on how to best protect our sensitive seagrass meadows, reefs and increase safety measures within the Johor MPA.

By involving the community in every process, mapping their tourism boat trips and areas, in building sinkers and, installing the lines, we ensure these protections are both effective and respected.

In light of the fundamental community-based partnership, we keep on refining the mooring layouts as we gather vital site-specific feedback focused on improving traffic flow, safety, and accessibility.

Growing a greener future at Pulau Besar, Mersing, Johor.

Our Laman Eko serves as a dedicated community garden where sustainability meets action.

By utilizing the RIDAN food composter, we transform the island’s food waste into nutrient-rich compost, enriching the sandy soil to cultivate fresh, edible plants.

This initiative allows the local community to freely harvest and enjoy organic produce, closing the loop on waste.

On this , we invite you to reflect on the small, impactful deeds that protect our environment.

Together, we can make a difference.

Sustaining Mersing’s Coastal Integrity

TIC Team, in collaboration with Pengakap Laut Politeknik Mersing , recently conducted a beach cleanup at Pantai Air Papan, Mersing.

As a popular public destination, maintaining this coastline is vital for both environmental health and visitor safety.

This post-monsoon cleanup revealed a staggering 365kg of marine debris.

Ghost Nets |
The primary pollutant found, posing a severe entanglement risk to local marine life.

Food Packaging |
High volumes of plastic bottles and food containers highlight the ongoing challenge of waste management in recreational areas.

Our objective remains clear —to intercept waste before it enters our oceans and to restore the safety of our natural habitats.

Call for Collaboration |
We are actively seeking CSR partners and corporate collaborators for upcoming environmental initiatives in Mersing, Johor.

If your organization is committed to marine conservation and community impact, let’s connect to scale our efforts.

Bridging the gap between tourism and conservation.

In a multi-stakeholder collaboration with , , .malaysia , , Johor State Government , Pejabat Daerah Mersing, and Majlis Daerah Mersing , we successfully hosted the Eko Guardian Workshop alongside trainers from —Dr Kalsitinoor and her team from Faculty of Business, Economics & Social Development.

This two-day upskilling session brought together Mersing’s tour guides, boatmen, and resort operators to align on a shared goal —protecting our marine ecosystem.

By equipping local stakeholders with updated knowledge and sustainable practices, we aim to significantly reduce environmental stressors within our Marine Protected Areas (MPA).

Our focus remains on driving tangible behavioral change, including:

Responsible Mooring |
Eliminating anchor damage on coral reefs through training and increased mooring line availability.

Safe Navigation |
Ensuring strict adherence to no-speeding zones to protect marine life.

Eco-Education |
Empowering operators to lead passenger briefings on essential marine etiquette.

Five modules were thought during this workshop:
1 | Safety measures & regulations for marine tourism operators.
2 | Marine awareness.
3 | Understanding cultural differences in tourism services.
4 | Marine tourism product development.
5a | Financial literacy
5b | Pricing and operational cost fixing

Together, we are ensuring that Mersing remains a safe, thriving destination for both travelers and our precious marine heritage.

Ghost nets (discarded fishing nets) are one of the biggest threats to our oceans, harming sea turtles and coral reefs in hotspots areas across marine park all over the world, even in our own Johor Marine Protected Area (MPA).

But we’re changing the narrative.

Introducing BlueNet. A solar-powered, IoT-integrated innovation that transforms marine waste into sustainable filament.

By combining renewable energy with smart tech, we're saving our marine ecosystem and fueling the circular economy.

Through our research partnerships, we have won the UNDP Island Waste Innovation Challenge in 2024. The whole 2025 was working together with the passionate team, full of trials (even through storm coming to the island) to build and run this innovative machine with team of experts from Politeknik Mersing Johor (PMJ), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), and Universiti Teknikal Melaka Malaysia (UTeM).

With resilience and collaboration, BlueNet is turning the tide on marine waste—transforming the threat of ghost nets into a circular future for our oceans.
