Every year, a big portion of food produced globally goes to waste. In landfills, this food decomposes without oxygen, releasing methane gas that traps atmospheric heat at up to 80 times the rate of carbon dioxide.
This World Environment Day, we are changing that narrative in Pulau Besar, Johor.
By uniting local communities and tourism operators, we intercept organic waste at the source and channel it into our food composter at Rumah Eko. The result is nutrient-rich compost distributed directly back to the islanders.
Pulau Besar’s sandy soil naturally struggles to retain water. This locally produced compost restores the soil structure, drastically improving water retention and empowering the community to grow resilient crops. We have turned a critical climate threat into a local agricultural asset.
Climate change is visible, local, and immediate. Healing the planet starts with modifying our simplest everyday routines.
