Thousands of ghost nets, or abandoned fishing nets, end up drifting in the ocean each year. These stealthy drift nets, transported by ocean currents directly onto our priceless coral reefs, are forgotten because they are hard to recycle.

Once trapped, they crush delicate corals and silently devour everything in their path, including sea turtles, reef fish, sharks, rays, and crabs. These lovely animals suffer injuries or become trapped if help is not provided.

In action, however, there is always hope.

To remove these lethal traps and safeguard the marine species that inhabit the reef, our crew dives deep. We eliminated 219.8 kg of ghost nets this year which is a reminder that every dive, cleanup, and effort puts us closer to safer oceans and clearer waters.

Investing in the future of our oceans yields measurable returns, and our coral rehabilitation initiatives at the Jr. Reef Rehab site are currently showing strong indicators of growth and resilience.

Through structured, science-backed restoration phases, our team has already logged four critical restoration dives dedicated to site cleaning, maintenance, monitoring, and structural deployment.

Our data reflects steady, healthy growth across twelve original coral nubbins from diverse genera, and we have successfully secured eight new nubbins to the metal structures established during our September 2025 phase.

This momentum continued into May with the deployment of thirty additional metal poles, expanding the habitat footprint with thirty new nubbins across the Acropora, Porites, Pocillopora, and Pavona genera.

Proactive management remains central to our mission, as demonstrated during our June monitoring sessions where we assessed acclimatisation and strategically replaced two nubbins showing signs of bleaching to optimize long-term survival rates.

Marine conservation demands continuous oversight, adaptive management, and precision, and we remain dedicated to restoring these vital ecosystems and tracking their progress.

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is being observed today, with a focus on the transformative potential of reducing food loss and waste.

Waste control on an island like Pulau Besar necessitates deliberate daily effort. Our team makes sure that nutrients cycle back into the island's soil instead of ending up in a landfill by limiting organic waste and composting our food leftovers.

One of the ways we safeguard our land and the nearby marine habitats is by turning food waste into soil compost. Staying dedicated to the road is more important for progress than achieving perfection overnight.
