Mr. Jarod Chia, the Chairman of MyBHA Johor, together with Mr. Sunny Soo, Deputy Chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor, attended Townhall Forum Air 2026 this morning at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

The forum provided a meaningful platform for engagement and dialogue on issues related to water services, water supply sustainability, consumer concerns and future challenges, with participation from SPAN, IWK and UTM.

Reliable and sustainable water supply is an important part of hotel operations and the overall tourism ecosystem. Platforms like this allow industry stakeholders to better understand current challenges, share feedback and strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies.

During the interview I pointed out that the issue of unregulated Short-Term Rental Accommodation (STRA) is not about stopping people from participating in the short-term rental market.

Rather, it is about creating a fair, responsible and properly regulated accommodation industry.

Licensed hotels are required to comply with various regulations involving business licensing, fire and building safety, insurance, taxation, employment requirements and other operating standards. These requirements involve substantial investment and operating costs, but they are necessary to safeguard our guests and maintain proper industry standards.

When unregulated short-term accommodation is allowed to compete within the same market without being subjected to similar responsibilities and regulatory requirements, it creates an uneven playing field for licensed accommodation operators.

Some short-term rental units providing additional facilities such as fine dining, pickle ball court, ktv room, large swimming pool with slides to guests without obtaining the licences approvals from the town council.

Imagine a residential unit being used for commercial purposes without business licence, proper insurance coverage and safety requirements. This could place our hotel guest safety, protection and accountability at serious risk.

Been so many years our association had consistently called for the proposed Short-Term Residential Accommodation (STRA) guideline to be implemented quickly to establish a practical and enforceable regulatory framework.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its tourism industry, every accommodation provider should be held to the same standards and move in the same direction towards a fair, responsible and sustainable industry.

My view on the RTS Link as more than just a transport project, it is a new economic gateway for Johor Bahru. 🇲🇾🇸🇬

With smoother connectivity between Johor and Singapore, we can expect greater opportunities for tourism, hospitality, retail, F&B, investment and local businesses.

For the hotel industry, our priority is..

This actually requires stronger destination marketing, attractive tourism products and closer collaboration between government and industry players.

As we move towards the RTS Link’s operations in 2027, Johor must be ready to capture its full potential and ensure the benefits are felt across the state.

A meaningful engagement today with YB Tuan Pannir Selvam, Chairman of the Johor State Unity, Heritage and Culture Committee, through a joint courtesy meeting by MyBHA and Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter.

The session provided a valuable platform for both hotel associations to exchange views with YB Tuan Pannir and En. Mohammad Nazrul bin Abd. Rahim, Director of Tourism Johor, on strengthening Johor’s hospitality and tourism ecosystem, particularly in areas involving the promotion of Johor’s heritage and culture through the hotel industry, workforce development, industry collaboration, and the need for a clearer regulatory framework for short-term rental accommodation (STRA).

As Johor continues to strengthen its tourism positioning, a closer collaboration between the State Government and association will be important in ensuring that tourism industry remains competitive, sustainable, safe and beneficial to the community.
