✨𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗦 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗔 𝗦𝗘𝗔 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦? ✨

The work doesn’t end when the hatchlings reach the sea. A few days after a nest has hatched, our Kapas Turtles team carries out a post-nest excavation, carefully opening the nest to discover the story left behind beneath the sand.

We count empty shells, unhatched eggs and any hatchlings that may not have made it out, allowing us to calculate 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 and record valuable information about each nest.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? 🔎 Every shell, every unhatched egg and every observation gives us clues about what happened underground. It can help us identify factors such as predation, environmental conditions or developmental problems, and better understand the challenges sea turtle nests face.

It may look like we’re simply counting eggshells, but conservation is in the details. Every nest teaches us something, and every piece of data helps us improve how we protect the next one. 💚🐢

✨𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 ✨

This green sea turtle hatchling was born with a partial pigmentation deficiency, a rare developmental condition that reduces melanin in parts of the body, giving its shell and flippers their unusually pale appearance.

Its lighter colour may offer slightly less camouflage against predators, although its true impact on survival remains unknown. Whether darker or lighter, each one faces the same incredible challenge: surviving against the odds in the vast ocean.

𝙉𝘼𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙀 𝘿𝙊𝙀𝙎𝙉’𝙏 𝘾𝙍𝙀𝘼𝙏𝙀 𝙋𝙀𝙍𝙁𝙀𝘾𝙏 𝙄𝙉𝘿𝙄𝙑𝙄𝘿𝙐𝘼𝙇𝙎. 𝙄𝙏 𝘾𝙍𝙀𝘼𝙏𝙀𝙎 𝙍𝙀𝙎𝙄𝙇𝙄𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙊𝙉𝙀𝙎.

Every nest we protect and every hatchling that reaches the sea is possible because of people who choose to care, learn, and take action.

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful KT volunteers, 𝗔𝗞𝗠𝗔𝗥 & 𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗔, for returning to Kapas. Your continued support, dedication, and willingness to give your time to sea turtle conservation inspire us every season.

This week, we are also delighted to welcome 𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡 and 𝗟𝗜𝗬𝗔𝗡𝗔 as they begin their journey into the world of sea turtle conservation. We are so happy to have these young women joining the team, learning new skills, and making a meaningful contribution from day one.

Under the cover of darkness, a mother green sea turtle returns to the beach where her life began, guided by instincts that have endured for millions of years. She asks for nothing more than a safe place to nest before quietly disappearing back into the sea.

Every nesting female carries the future of her
species. Every protected nest is another chance for sea turtles to survive.

One of the questions we hear most often is: “𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙗𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙?“

The answer is simple: 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪
And that’s exactly how it should be.

At Kapas Turtles, hatchling releases are never scheduled for visitors. Sea turtles emerge when nature decides the time is right, guided by the conditions inside the nest.

That timing matters.

As hatchlings crawl across the beach, they begin a remarkable process called 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. During this journey, they absorb natural cues that may help them return to the very same coastline decades later to lay their own eggs.

That first crawl is not just a race to the sea.

It is the beginning of an incredible life journey.

Our role is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, but to 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘁. We safeguard nests, minimise disturbance, and allow hatchlings to begin their lives as naturally as possible.

Thank you to everyone who joins us with patience and respect. By witnessing a hatchling release, you are experiencing sea turtle conservation the way it should be.

Our releases are an opportunity to learn. Before every release, we share the fascinating story of sea turtles, the challenges they face, and why protecting them matters. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is one of the most powerful conservation tools we have, and an essential part of our commitment to nature.

𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗦 💔

Not every day in sea turtle conservation ends with hatchlings reaching the sea.

Today we faced one of the hardest parts of this work: a stranded adult male sea turtle washed ashore on Kapas Island.

While nesting females are the turtles we see most often on our beaches, adult males spend almost their entire lives at sea. Seeing one this close to shore is uncommon. 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Sea turtles take decades to reach maturity. An adult male may contribute to the reproduction of many females over many breeding seasons. When an adult turtle dies, we are not only losing one individual, we are losing years of future generations that will never exist.

Conservation is not only about hatchling releases and happy moments. It is also about documenting losses, learning from them, and remembering why protecting our oceans matters so much.

𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗦 𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗦 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗬. 💚

We feel incredibly lucky at Kapas Turtles to meet volunteers who pour their hearts into helping and bring such a wonderful energy to our little corner of the island.

Having 𝗪𝗔𝗜 𝗬𝗜𝗡 and 𝗝𝗘𝗡𝗡 with us has been an absolute pleasure. From patrols and beach clean ups to sunsets and snorkelling adventures, they embraced every moment with enthusiasm and smiles.

They also spoiled us in the kitchen, cooking delicious meals and making our workload so much lighter. It meant more than they probably realise. 🍲❤️

And while we say goodbye to these two amazing ladies, 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗔, our young French volunteer, will still be staying with us a little longer.

We will definitely miss these energetic, kind and young spirited women who quickly became part of the Kapas Turtles family.

Thank you for the memories and the hard work. Safe travel back home, and hopefully our paths cross again under the same ocean skies.
