Persatuan Belia Buddhist Malaysia (YBAM) Jawatankuasa Perhubungan Negeri Melaka

Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) Melaka State Liaison Committee (MLK SLC)

The Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) is the leading Buddhist youth organisation in Malaysia. Through our conviction in the Buddha’s mission of compassion, growth and liberation, we continuously promote positive lifestyle in developing a society of wisdom, compassion and gratitude. Since its formation in 1970, YBAM has actively involved in establishing Buddhist organisations nationwide, propagating the learning of Dharma among the youths and providing leadership training for them. Using this strong foundation that we helped to build, local Buddhist organisations have accomplished great progress in the development of local Buddhist communities. YBAM coordinates more than 260 member organisations through its 13 State Liaison Committees all over Malaysia. Besides, YBAM also coordinates the varsities’ Buddhist societies (including teacher training colleges), secondary schools’ Buddhist societies and Buddhist Youth Fellowship through the various Standing Committees. YBAM also participates actively in the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM), the Eight Major Chinese Youth Organisation (EMCO) and the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth. To further enhance the involvement of Buddhists in nation building, YBAM regularly expresses its opinion on the current affairs and Buddhist rights through the media. Dharma Propagation ~ Practice of Dharma is the motivation force to purify the society

YBAM is making an effort to provide the Malaysian Buddhist community with better quality, creativity and systematic Dharma propagation service. Dharma speakers who are well-equipped with knowledge on the latest social developments are trained and manual for Dharma Speakers are compiled so that they could effectively carry out Dharma propagation work to the youths. Today, Member Organisations of YBAM are capable of conducting Dharma propagation activities on their own. The YBAM invites local as well as overseas Dharma speakers of different schools of Buddhism to give Dharma talks in the country. The YBAM also conducts Advance Dharma Study Class, seminars on specific topics and Dharma cultivations from time to time to meet the demand of the Buddhist community. Education ~ Uplifting the quality of Buddhist youths comes from firm foundation on education and cultivation

While helping the member organisations to set up Children Dharma Class or Sunday Dharma Class, the YBAM is making an effort to uplift the quality of teachers and teaching materials for Sunday Dharma Class. The YBAM has compiled the “Pre-school Dharma Study Curriculum”, “Primary School Dharma Study Texts” and “Elementary Dharma Curriculum for Varsities”. The YBAM also organises training courses on “Children Dharma Study Class Teachers’ Tribe.”

Throughout the years, the YBAM jointly organises the “National Buddhist Examination” with Malaysian Buddhist Association and the response is overwhelming. Culture ~ Practise Buddhist life and bring together the Buddhist community

Culture is the continuation of inheriting a religion. Buddhist family is an important part of the Buddhist community. Therefore, the YBAM conducts mass taking refuge ceremony, Buddhist wedding, and parenting workshops in order to materialise the concept of Buddhist family. The YBAM organised the “Venerable Asvaghosa Buddhist Literature Award” in 1998 and 2008 to encourage Buddhist literature creations. On the musical side, the “Melody of Truth and Beauty” series has created a wave for local Buddhist hymns and brewed the competition on Buddhist hymns for “Melody of Truth and Beauty Award” with the objective to bring together the force of the vibrant Buddhist youths and to nurture budding writers and singers for Buddhist hymns. Welfare ~ Promote compassion and relief, express the spirit of Bodhisattva who benefits others

The YBAM made the first move to launch blood donation campaign in the country in the early 70’s and successfully changed the wrong mindset of the Chinese community on blood donation. The YBAM took a step further and launched the organ donation campaign and such campaigns have successfully aroused the awareness and concern of the public on blood and organ donations. Buddhism emphasises on the physical and spiritual health of individuals and because of this, the YBAM set up and motivated the PELITA Psychological Guidance Unit with local Buddhism as its foundation. In addition, the YBAM also positively responds to and participates in charity and relief activities. In 2008, the relief fund campaigns launched by the YBAM for the typhoon victims in Myanmar and the flood victims in Sechuan, China were well received by the public. Publications ~ Dharma propagation through Buddhist literature

“Dharma propagation through Buddhist literatures” is the lofty ideal of the YBAM in its publication works. The materials published by the YBAM over the years covers all schools of Buddhism, with precise contents and far reaching influence.

“Buddhist Digest”, “Eastern Horizon” and “Berita YBAM” bulletin are published by YBAM on the regular basis. To date, the YBAM has published and circulated more than 100 types of Buddhist pamphlets in Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia and English. The circulation of these pamphlets helped the penetration of basic Buddhism into every corner of the country. Leadership and organisation training ~ training the young Buddhist leaders and to promote the development of Malaysian Buddhism

The uplift of leaders and organisations is the motivation force of YBAM to move forward and to face the challenges. The YBAM has organised different training courses ranging from region, state and national levels, induction course, Buddhist management and administration course for council members, committee members as well as ordinary members for their self improvement. Furthermore, the YBAM also conducts training camps and interaction camps for secondary schools and varsity students and provide consultation on related activities. The YBAM also carries out long term plan on training of Dharma speakers and leaders with the hope that it could provide a group of young Buddhist leaders with quality for the Buddhist community in Malaysia. External relationships ~ setting root in homeland with global vision

YBAM is the one and only national Buddhist youth organisation recognised by the government to represent the Malaysian Buddhist youths. YBAM is also a member of the Majlis Belia Malaysia. It helps to protect the legitimate rights of the Buddhist youths through the participation in the activities of the Majlis Belia Malaysia and Ministry of Youth and Sports. The YBAM is active in motivation the international Buddhist youth campaign and maintain good rapport with the World Buddhist Fellowship and World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY). Current issues ~ Expressing the concern of Buddhists on current society

The YBAM has, from time to time, expressed its opinions on important social issues through various media on behalf of the Buddhist community with the faith bestowed by the Buddhist youths in the country and the foundation formed by member organisations all over the country. For instance, the YBAM rejects Malaysia as an Islamic country and calls upon the government to abolish the Internal Security Act which fails to conform to human rights. The YBAM has at the same time organised various types of seminars and forums to discuss current issues and Buddhist issues. Buddhist societies in university colleges and secondary schools ~ nurturing the future pillars of Buddhism

The YBAM is relentlessly making an effort to coordinate with the Buddhist activities in secondary schools, varsities, teachers’ training colleges and other institutions oh higher learning and to provide consultations and training.

Finding Calm and Wisdom in Facing the SPM Challenge
204 students encouraged to face exam pressure and future choices with wisdom

As the SPM examination approaches, SMK Tinggi Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Melaka and YBAM Melaka SLC recently jointly organised an SPM Blessing Ceremony for 204 Form Five Buddhist students, offering them encouragement and blessings as they prepare for the examination.

Venerable Zong Ping, Religious Advisor of YBAM Melaka SLC and Abbot of Ba Bang Fo Zi She, was invited to share with the students on managing examination pressure, emotions and future choices.

He reminded the students that feeling nervous and anxious before an important examination is normal. What matters is learning to manage these emotions and focusing on what they can control.

Using the wisdom sword and blue lotus held by Manjushri Bodhisattva as an analogy, he encouraged students to develop not only knowledge, but also the ability to understand, discern and make wise choices when facing information, opportunities and different paths in life.

YBAM Melaka SLC Vice Chairperson Lim Vun Haw also encouraged the students to see SPM not merely as an examination, but as an important transition towards the next stage of life. Regardless of how the journey unfolds, he hoped that the students would carry with them the knowledge, values and experiences gained throughout their school years as they move forward.

As a gesture of encouragement, YBAM Melaka SLC also prepared stationery gifts for all the students, conveying its best wishes for them to remain calm, prepare well and perform to the best of their abilities in the upcoming examination.

The ceremony provided the students with an opportunity to pause from their examination preparations, settle their minds and reflect on their future, while highlighting the importance of collaboration between schools and community organisations in supporting students' holistic growth and life education.

May every student face the challenges ahead with a calm mind and embrace the future with wisdom.

Wishing all SPM candidates a smooth preparation, a peaceful mind and the confidence to do their best. 🙏

Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival Together|Strengthening Community Bonds Through Cultural Exchange

YBAM Melaka SLC was represented by its Vice Chairman, Lim Vun Haw, at the “Unity Mid-Autumn Festival” carnival jointly organised by the Bukit Beruang Buddhist Society and the Ministry of National Unity. He also participated in the ceremonial firing of the confetti cannon to mark the opening of the celebration.

The carnival brought together people from different age groups and ethnic backgrounds at SJK(C) Bukit Beruang, creating a warm and lively atmosphere as the community gathered under one roof to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Beyond celebrating a traditional festival, the event provided a meaningful platform for people to meet, interact and participate in one another’s cultures.

Beginning at 5.00 pm, the programme featured a variety of competitions and interactive activities. The evening celebration included meals representing the three major ethnic communities, as well as bilingual lantern riddles, traditional games, cultural experiences, traditional costume showcases and cultural performances. A lively lion and dragon dance performance further added to the festive atmosphere.

From “watching” to “participating”, the carnival demonstrated how traditional festivals can go beyond cultural appreciation to encourage genuine interaction among members of the community. Through shared experiences, cultural traditions can be preserved while people of different backgrounds gain a better understanding of one another.

YBAM Melaka SLC extends its congratulations to the Bukit Beruang Buddhist Association on the successful organisation of this meaningful celebration, and commends the organising team for their dedication and thoughtful planning.

May the spirit of unity and warmth continue to grow, with culture serving as a bridge that brings people closer and strengthens the bonds within our community.

Wishing everyone a blessed Mid-Autumn Festival and good health and happiness for the whole family! 🌕🏮

🪔 The Light of Wisdom Continues|Learning Buddhism Beyond Competition

The Buddhist Society of St. David’s High School, Melaka recently organised the 37th Buddhist Knowledge Competition, themed “The Light of Wisdom Continues”, with 13 teams of secondary school students aged between 13 and 17 taking part.

The competition featured a combination of a written test, station-based challenges and an oral question-and-answer session, allowing students to deepen their Buddhist knowledge while developing teamwork, critical thinking and the ability to respond under pressure. Following the first stage, the four highest-scoring teams advanced to the final round, where they were assessed through a series of oral questions focusing on their understanding of Buddhism and their ability to respond spontaneously.

Invited as the opening guest, YBAM Melaka SLC Chairperson Wong Kian Yong shared that the theme “The Light of Wisdom Continues” represents not only the continuation of wisdom, but also the passing on of Buddhist education, character development and life wisdom.

The competition is only the form; Buddhist education is the core.

Learning Buddhism is not simply about remembering knowledge or achieving good results in a competition. More importantly, when young people encounter challenges or difficult choices in life, they can draw upon what they have learned, pause to reflect, distinguish right from wrong, and respond with wisdom.

For young people, the value of a competition goes beyond winning or losing.

Answering questions, discussing ideas, interacting with others, and even learning from mistakes and shortcomings are all opportunities for self-discovery and growth.

Wong also encouraged young people to become not only learners of Buddhism, but future transmitters of wisdom — bringing what they have learned back to their schools, families and daily lives, and influencing those around them through their actions.

🪔 One light can illuminate another.

At the closing ceremony, Venerable Lee Terk, Religious Advisor of YBAM Melaka SLC, reminded participants that learning Buddhism can begin with becoming more aware of life.

When facing difficulties, rather than simply complaining about life, one can return to the Buddha’s teachings, observe one’s own state of mind, learn to adjust one’s attitude and face challenges with a more positive mindset.

Ultimately, Buddhist learning must return to everyday life.

YBAM Melaka SLC would also like to express its sincere appreciation to St. David’s High School Principal Madam Chien Siew Ngo for her warm hospitality and meaningful exchange, as well as for the school’s continued trust and support towards YBAM Melaka SLC.

Through the exchange, we gained a deeper understanding of the school’s needs in student character development, youth growth and Buddhist education. The school’s trust has also given YBAM the opportunity to work together with the school and its Buddhist Society to create more meaningful platforms for young people to learn, interact and grow.

For YBAM, stepping into schools is not merely about organising activities. It is about building meaningful educational partnerships and walking alongside schools in nurturing the growth of young people.

Our appreciation goes to the school and the Buddhist Society for their dedication. May these lights of wisdom continue to shine and be passed on through our schools, families and communities.

Bringing Character Education to School Through Board Games

Recently, the YBAM Melaka State Liaison Committee team visited SJKC Pay Chee for our second round of discussion and coordination with the headmaster, the senior assistant and the teacher n charge, in preparation for the board game programme to be held at the school on 10 October.

To ensure that the programme meets the needs of the students, the team has held two rounds of discussions and coordination with the school. Based on the school’s requirements and feedback, we have planned the programme structure, selection of board games, learning activities, facilitation approach and team roles for the 117 participating students.

Board games are more than just games. They can also serve as an engaging form of experiential learning. Through gameplay, students learn to follow rules, think critically, make decisions, communicate and collaborate. When facing challenges, winning or losing, they also have opportunities to develop patience, responsibility, respect for others and problem-solving skills.

Through a thoughtfully designed board game programme, we hope to turn character education into something students can experience directly. They learn through play, grow through interaction, and gradually develop positive values such as diligence, confidence and gratitude.

We sincerely thank the Principal, Vice Principal and teachers in charge for their warm reception, as well as the school for its trust in and invitation to YBAM. The two rounds of discussion and coordination are not merely about preparing an activity, but also about working together to create a more meaningful and suitable learning experience for the students.

For YBAM, the school’s trust is both an affirmation and a responsibility. The YBAM Melaka State Liaison Committee will continue to work with schools in a professional, responsible and committed manner, ensuring that every educational programme we undertake is carefully planned and delivered.

Moving forward, we will continue to bring the strength and experience of our youth volunteers into schools, using games, experiential learning and meaningful interaction as platforms to promote character and life education, while accompanying children as they learn and grow.
