Join us as we celebrate and share the legacy of this special Peranakan Indian community! Many people often mistake us, the Chetti Melaka community, for the Chettiar, but we are distinct and unique in both our origins and cultural identity. The Chetti Melaka are a culturally rich and historically rooted community in Malaysia. Our forefathers were Indian Tamil traders from Kalingapatnam and other so
uthern Indian ports who arrived in Melaka around 1414 during the Malacca Sultanate era. These early settlers married local Malay women, and their children grew up embracing the Malay language, attire, customs, and cuisine, while still preserving the Hindu Saiva faith and essential elements of Indian tradition. This fusion of Indian and Malay influences birthed a unique ethnocultural group — the Chetti Melaka, also known as Peranakan Indian. We are a minority community, but we continue to practice our vibrant traditions with great pride: from pantun and traditional dances like joget, to our festivals, temple rituals, and distinctive cuisine. To this day, we continue to uphold our unique cultural identity, language, and religious practices — a living legacy of our blended heritage.
