The restorer, the story-teller, the musician.

To honour its past tenants Mr Lee’s Dental Laboratories shop still retains the signage that has been there for over fifty years.

Today, it has finally found a new tenant, a second-hand vintage shop.

Lestrouble Vintage Store is owned by Les Lee. A proprietor of a Caltex station in Bachang (together with his wife Adeline in picture), Les is also a musician who loves to tell stories.

Les has been selling second hand vintage items from home and at night markets in the past, and he brings a penchant for guitars, music posters and more importantly, his love for people to the neighbourhood.

Bunga Rampei (in baba patois) or Bunga Rampay in Malay is a potpourri made from local flowers, cut from shredded pandan leaves and an assortment of flowers and fragranced with perfume. This potpourri features in weddings or festivals and ceremonial gatherings within the peranakan-chinese and malay community.

This workshop will be conducted by Roots & Petals, based on Jennifer’s growing up in Melaka.

Roots & Petals is the brainchild of Donald and Lily’s founder Jennifer Tan. A creative endeavour for her and her mother and daughter, it is a way for three generations to continue to showcase their creativity, apart from food. “Roots represents my mother Lily, the older generation, the foundation of our family. Petals are my daughter and me,” Jennifer explains in a recent newspaper article.

Learn and play! Cherki with SEDARA

Persatuan Persaudaran Kesenian dan Kebudayaan Peranakan Melaka (SEDARA) was officially registered with Registrar of Socisties Malaysia on 28 January, 2024 after the meeting of arts and culture enthusiasts from the three Peranakan communities in Melaka (Baba Nyonya, Chetti Melaka and Portuguese).

Short terms activities for the association include highlighting shared culture and educating members and the public in regards to the daily practices of the communities including the proper tying of the sarong and donning of the kebaya, learning to play the traditional card game Cherki and culture talks. The activities also aim to foster interaction and unity amongst the Peranakan communities.

Throwback to last Saturday. Thank you Port Sett Ukes for utilizing The Bendahari event space for Rhythms & Roots: Music & Heritage Workshop.

The intention of the programme was to impart to the younger generation, the elements of music of the different peranakan communities of Melaka. Sharing by community elders and musicians, Martin Theseira, Baba Cedric Tan, Aunty Dhanam (Thanapakiam), Francisco (Chico), Hairul Ashraf with an introduction into the elements that make a musical piece by Cassel Krishnan.

Spear headed by Gloria John, who leads the Port Sett Ukes, an inter-cultural group that encourages youth to learn about our cultural roots through Ukulele playing classes. The workshop was open to all, and they do hope for more to join their future endeavours!
