The Datai Pledge The Datai Pledge is a Private Trust dedicated to improving the well-being of the environment, wildlife and local community of Langkawi.

It was officially launched in 2020 to create a robust conservation and sustainability programme for . We believe that travel has the potential to be transformative; not only for the traveller but also for the host community. The Datai Pledge was created on the premise of protecting the biodiversity and supporting the local community of Langkawi, for today and the future. Coinciding with the Summer Solstice and as part of London Climate Action Week, The Datai Pledge was honoured to be part of Nature in the City at Sea Containers London – an uplifting gathering of changemakers from conservation, hospitality, finance, food systems and comedy, all talking about nature’s role in shaping a better future. It was wonderful to bring a touch of nature-loving to the heart of London during such an important week.

Thank you to everyone who joined us alongside , and for a conversation about protecting biodiversity, investing in nature, advancing regenerative practices and reconnecting people with the natural world.

Hosted by The Datai Pledge Ambassador, , the event featured brilliant speakers who reminded us that even when the challenges facing our planet feel huge, hope, humanity and a bit of connection in a beautiful space can spark inspiration and climate action.

Meet Mak Tok: a single mother, artisan candle maker, and changemaker whose story is one of resilience, determination, and purpose.

As one of the local beneficiaries of our pillar partner, The KanshaLife Project, Mak Tok was given the opportunity to develop her craft and build a more sustainable livelihood. Each year, she transforms thousands of kilograms of used candle wax collected from The Datai Langkawi into handcrafted candles, giving discarded materials a second life while supporting her family.

Through the buy-back programme between The KanshaLife Project and The Datai Langkawi, the candles return to the resort and now make up nearly 70% of our annual candle consumption – completing a truly circular journey.

What began as discarded wax has been transformed through skill, opportunity, and purpose. Mak Tok's story is a reminder that sustainability is not only about caring for the environment, but also about creating meaningful opportunities for local communities.

Half of all plastic ever produced was made for single use. Yet long after it has been discarded, it remains in our environment for generations, breaking down into microplastics that are now found in our oceans, soil, drinking water, and even the human body.

At The Datai Langkawi, plastic still enters our supply chain through food packaging and essential operations. But instead of letting it end up in landfills, we focus on mindful waste management.

This Plastic Free July, we're looking beyond disposal and asking what waste can become instead. Together with The KanshaLife Project, discarded plastic bags are transformed into a durable material known as Plabric, before being hand-crafted into clutches and other everyday items.

It's a reminder that reducing waste is only part of the solution. By rethinking the materials we already have, we can give them a second life and help keep them out of our natural environment.

This World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of small, thoughtful actions by our Pure For The Future pillar. At The Lab, glass upcycling demonstrates how our Zero-Waste goal translates into tangible environmental impact.

Every year, more than 58,000 kg of glass bottles from our operations are given a second life. Instead of ending up in landfills, they are crushed, recycled, and transformed into an array of beautiful products — including coasters, figurines and keychains, made with up to 70% recycled glass. Through our Glass and Resin Art Workshop, guests are invited to take part in this journey, crafting their own keepsake while learning about circular practices.

This year, we have recycled over 100,000 glass bottles, as of May 2026. Because protecting the planet isn’t defined by a single grand gesture, but by thousands of conscious choices made every day. Through The Datai Pledge, each bottle recycled is one small step towards a more circular future.

From sunrise walks beneath the rainforest canopy to evenings filled with music, storytelling, and shared celebration, the closing days of The Datai Pledge Festival brought together experiences rooted in culture, creativity, and care for the natural world.⁠

Guests began their mornings immersed in nature, followed by interactive workshops and hands-on experiences celebrating traditional crafts, mindful living, and the communities connected to Langkawi. Across the festival, thoughtful exchanges and shared moments revealed the impact that can grow through connection and collaboration.⁠

As evening fell, themed dining experiences offered a journey through flavour, culture, and tradition – from rainforest-inspired cuisine to coastal influences accompanied by storytelling, music, and performances. Beneath the night sky, stargazing invited a quiet moment of reflection and wonder.⁠

The festival concluded with a memorable Finale Night featuring an elegant gala dinner, a fundraising auction, and a six-hands dining experience with Chef Jack Weldie from . Traditional performances by local students and a stirring performance by with her sape, a traditional lute native to Borneo, brought the evening to life, closing the festival with a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting the people, culture, and natural heritage that make our island so extraordinary.⁠

Set within our rainforest sanctuary, the opening days of The Datai Pledge Festival unfolded as a celebration of connection – between human, nature, and purpose.

As we marked five years of The Datai Pledge, the festival began with a warm gathering at the Welcome Cocktail Reception, where stories of our journey came to life across the lobby – inviting guests to pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the impact created alongside our community and partners. It was more than an opening; it was a shared moment that brought together the very people who continue to shape this journey.

From there, the days flowed into a series of meaningful encounters – hands-on batik and tie-dye sessions with the artisans of , eye-opening dolphin explorations guided by marine researchers from , and an atmospheric Langkawi Night at The Gulai House, where local culture, flavours, and traditions were celebrated in vibrant harmony.

Each experience offered a deeper connection to the natural world and the community that calls it home.

Meet Dr Louisa Shobhini Ponnampalam, a Malaysian marine biologist, ocean advocate, and co-founder of MareCet – Malaysia’s first and only NGO dedicated to marine mammal research and conservation.

Often referred to as the country’s real-life 'Dolphin Girl', her lifelong passion has helped reshape our understanding of dolphins, porpoises, whales, and dugongs in Malaysia’s waters. Her work has established vital baseline data and identified key habitats such as the waters surrounding Langkawi, now recognised as an Important Marine Mammal Area.

Through the partnership with our Fish For The Future pillar since 2021, The Datai Pledge supports MareCet’s research and outreach efforts – contributing to stronger conservation, greater awareness, and a more sustainable future for Malaysia’s marine life.
