Last week (5–6 June), we were delighted to join UMT Biodiversity Club | 🌱 for an inspiring two-day programme that brought together 47 participants from diverse academic backgrounds, united by a shared interest in nature and conservation. Representing IBTPL and MPS, Dr. Aini Hasanah introduced participants to the fascinating primates of Kenyir, sharing insights into their conservation status and ongoing research efforts in Terengganu. Dr. Yap Jo Leen highlighted conservation initiatives for the dusky langur in Penang (LangurProjectPenang) demonstrating how citizen science networks can play a powerful role in protecting wildlife. She also explored the importance of road ecology and how canopy bridges help reduce human–wildlife conflicts by providing safe passage for arboreal species.
The learning continued outdoors on Saturday morning, as participants embarked on a biodiversity walk around Lawit, guided by facilitators from NBS and Mr. Anuar McAfee of UNISZA. Through hands-on observation and discussions, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the rich biodiversity surrounding them. Dr. Yao also led an interactive citizen science activity that encouraged participants to explore ethnography, community engagement, and the power of collective action in conservation. We hope this programme has fostered meaningful connections, strengthened conservation networks, and inspired the next generation of biodiversity advocates to make a lasting impact on wildlife and ecosystem conservation.
