The East Malaysia Business Learning Tour 2.0 concluded on a high note with the East-West Malaysia Business Networking Night at Sheraton Hotel Kuching, bringing together nearly 70 entrepreneurs and business representatives from Sarawak and West Malaysia.

It was an evening filled with meaningful conversations, new connections and the exchange of ideas — creating a valuable platform for businesses from both regions to explore potential collaborations and opportunities.

We were also honoured by the presence of Cr Tan Kai, Chairman of Padawan Municipal Council, and Dato Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, President of the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF), whose participation further strengthened the dialogue between the business community and local stakeholders.

For SME Sarawak, networking is more than simply exchanging business cards. It is about building relationships, opening doors and creating opportunities for businesses to grow together.

We believe stronger East-West connections can unlock greater opportunities in investment, partnerships, market access, knowledge sharing and business expansion.

SME Sarawak President Mr Jordan Ong, recently shared the SME perspective in an interview with Sin Chew Daily (星洲日报) on the Government’s review of the current RM1,700 minimum wage.

From the SME perspective, the issue is not simply whether RM1,700 is too high or too low. The greater consideration is how the minimum wage is determined and implemented, taking into account differences in living costs, productivity, industry conditions and the ability of SMEs to absorb higher labour costs.

While supporting meaningful and progressive wage growth for workers, SME Sarawak believes any further adjustment should be evidence-based, gradual and productivity-linked, while recognising the realities faced by labour-intensive and lower-margin businesses.

The ultimate goal should be to build a stronger wage ladder that enables workers to progressively increase their income through skills development, higher productivity and higher-value employment, while ensuring SMEs remain sustainable and competitive.

One national wage floor, supported by a more flexible and productivity-linked wage framework that recognises regional and sectoral realities.
