Strengthening Our Collective Commitment to Human Rights in Sarawak

PurpleLily together with local NGOs was part of the CSOP4R entourage โ€” had the honour of making a courtesy call to SUHAKAM Sarawak, engaging in a meaningful exchange on the human rights landscape in Sarawak, with a focus on childrenโ€™s rights and vulnerable communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to SUHAKAM Commissioner Tuan Dahim anak Nadot, Childrenโ€™s Commissioner Dr Zufar Yadi, and the SUHAKAM Sarawak team for the warm welcome, openness, and constructive dialogue.

Key takeaways from the engagement:

1. Gaps still exist and must be addressed.
Despite progress, there are ongoing gaps in awareness, access, protection, implementation, and coordination in advancing human rights and childrenโ€™s rights.

2. Stronger collaboration is essential.
Civil society, SUHAKAM, government agencies, and communities each play a critical role. Greater coordination is needed to ensure policies and commitments translate into real impact on the ground.

3. Childrenโ€™s rights must remain a priority.
Sustained advocacy, stronger protection systems, and meaningful inclusion of childrenโ€™s voices are key to ensuring their rights are upheld.

4. A clear opportunity to move forward together.
There is strong potential for continued collaboration with SUHAKAM on human rights education, child rights advocacy, policy engagement, and community empowerment initiatives in Sarawak.

We also acknowledge that the strong support and openness of the Sarawak Government towards SUHAKAM provides an important enabling environment. This is a valuable advantage that allows SUHAKAM and NGOs to engage constructively, strengthen advocacy, and contribute meaningfully to policy discussions.

For all participating CSOs, the way forward is clear:

Build stronger bridges. Deepen collaboration. Turn dialogue into action.

Together, we can work towards a Sarawak where human rights are understood, respected, and protected โ€” and where every child can grow up with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

A heartfelt thank you once again to SUHAKAM Commissioner Tuan Dahim, Childrenโ€™s Commissioner Dr Zufar Yadi, and the entire SUHAKAM Sarawak team for the meaningful engagement.

This is not just a visit, it is the beginning of stronger collective action.

Stronger Together: Building a Stronger Civil Society Voice for Sarawak ๐Ÿ’œ

PurpleLily was pleased to welcome the CSO Platform for Reform (CSOP4R) entourage for a meaningful exchange on strengthening civil society, policy reform, advocacy and good governance in Sarawak.

The discussion was an opportunity to reflect on how CSOs and NGOs can work together more strategically to create greater impact.

Key takeaways from our discussion:

๐Ÿ”น Stronger collaboration, greater impact
By sharing knowledge, resources, evidence and networks, CSOs can build stronger collective solutions for community challenges.

๐Ÿ”น From advocacy to policy influence
Civil society plays an important role in bringing community voices, evidence and recommendations into policy discussions.

๐Ÿ”น Good governance needs active participation
Transparency, accountability and inclusive decision-making require the collective efforts of all sectors.

๐Ÿ”น Strengthening Sarawakโ€™s civil society voice
Together, we can build a more connected CSO ecosystem where diverse voices โ€” including women, girls, persons with disabilities, rural communities and underserved groups โ€” are represented.

Moving forward, PurpleLily looks forward to strengthening collaborations across Sarawak, Sabah and West Malaysia to exchange experiences, strengthen advocacy and promote more inclusive policies.

Connect. Collaborate. Build evidence. Amplify community voices. Influence policy.

A heartfelt thank you to CSO Platform for Reform for the visit, open dialogue and opportunity to explore future collaborations.

This is not the end of a conversation โ€” it is the beginning of stronger collaboration. ๐ŸŒฑ

Digital Healthcare Must Leave No One Behind

On 4 August 2026, PurpleLily was honoured to be part of the Forum on Access to Sarawak State Digital Services for the Healthcare of Vulnerable Populations, bringing together government, healthcare professionals, civil society and community voices to reflect on an important question:

As Sarawak moves forward with digital transformation, are we ensuring that everyone can move forward with it?

For PurpleLily, one key takeaway stood out โ€” digitalisation is not only about technology; it is about people, access, dignity and equity.

Some reflections we are taking forward:

1. Digital healthcare must be inclusive by design.
Technology should make healthcare more accessible, not create new barriers for people who are already underserved.

2. Access goes beyond having a digital platform.
Connectivity, digital literacy, affordability, disability accessibility and the realities of rural communities all matter.

3. The voices of communities must shape digital transformation.
Policies and systems work best when they are informed by the lived experiences of the people who use them.

4. Collaboration is essential.
Government, healthcare providers, civil society, disability organisations and communities each hold a piece of the solution. Meaningful reform happens when we bring these perspectives together.

5. Equity must remain at the heart of digital healthcare.
As Sarawak works towards its broader digital transformation goals under PCDS 2030, we must ensure that vulnerable and underserved communities are not left behind.

PurpleLily is grateful to all the speakers and contributors who shared their knowledge, experiences and perspectives โ€” Tuan Dahim anak Nadot, SUHAKAM Commissioner for Sarawak, Dr Jivan Latif Anak Niru, Prof Dr Datu Andrew Kiyu, Mr Dunstan Lim, Assoc. Prof Dr Yuwana Podin, Geoffrey Tang and Mr Robert Hii โ€” and to everyone who participated in the open dialogue.

A special thank you to the CSO Platform for Reform for creating the space for civil society to come together, ask difficult questions, exchange perspectives and contribute towards a more inclusive reform agenda.

As civil society organisations, we have an important role to play: to keep asking who is being reached, who is being left behind, and what needs to change.

Because digital transformation should not simply make services faster.

It should make services fairer, more accessible and more responsive to the people who need them most.๐Ÿ’œ
