Happy 143 years of brigade! The March continues
⚓ 143 YEARS — THE JOURNEY CONTINUES | 1883–2026
It began with a simple idea.
On the evening of 4 October 1883, in a mission hall on North Woodside Road, Glasgow, William Alexander Smith, together with James and John Hill, opened the doors to a group of boys and began something entirely new.
Smith was both a Sunday School teacher and a Volunteer officer. He saw that the boys needed more than lessons alone. They needed faith with discipline, Christian teaching with activity, and leaders who would walk alongside them. And so, The Boys’ Brigade was born.
The beginning was simple. There was no elaborate uniform, no band and no great organisation. The early programme was largely drill, prayer and short services. Discipline was taken seriously , a boy who arrived even a minute late could not fall in for parade! Fifty-nine names were recorded during those first weeks, and 35 boys were formally enrolled in November 1883.
Yet behind that discipline was a much greater purpose: to advance Christ’s Kingdom among boys and develop lives marked by reverence, discipline and self-respect. The anchor became their emblem, with the words from Hebrews 6:19:
“Sure and Stedfast.” ⚓
From that one Company in Glasgow, a movement began that would eventually reach boys and young people around the world. The first BB camp followed in 1886, and generation after generation continued the journey.
Today, 143 years later, the photographs may look different.
The uniforms might have changed in different parts of the world.
The activities have grown.
The faces belong to another generation.
But the mission continues.
From Glasgow in 1883 to today in 2026, we remain thankful for every Boy & Girls, NCOs, Officer, Captains and leaders who has carried the colours before us , and for the next generation who will carry them forward.
Faith & Discipline.
Sure & Stedfast.
1883 → 2026. The Journey Continues. ⚓
Happy 143rd Founding Day to The Boys’ Brigade!
Sure & Stedfast
感谢那些曾经在我们之前高举旗帜、铺下道路的人;
Faith & Discipline.
Sure & Stedfast.
⚓ 1883 → 2026
The Journey Continues.
祝 The Boys’ Brigade 少年军
