Day 7: Good Friday

Luke 23:46
Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. After everything—the betrayal, the trial, the nails, the darkness, the thirst—Jesus arrived at this final act.

Not a cry of despair. A prayer of trust. Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit. Not My hands. Not fate. Not the grave. Your hands.

From the first breath in Bethlehem to this final breath on Golgotha, Jesus lived in complete trust of the Father. And even now, at the threshold of death, He surrenders all—not into the void, but into the hands that have held Him from eternity.

Not a defeat. A handing over. A trust so complete that death itself becomes an act of worship.

I encourage you to read the entire crucifixion account slowly—Mark 15 or John 19.

Day 6

John 19:30
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Not I am finished. Not a whisper of defeat.
But, It is finished.

A cry of completion. The debt that could not be paid—paid. The work that could only be done by God—done. Sin answered. Justice satisfied. The separation that began in a garden ended on a cross.

Tetelestai. The Greek word was stamped on paid-in-full bills. Written across finished transactions. Nothing left to add. Nothing left to owe. And still we strive.

We add to what is complete. We try to earn what has already been given. We measure our worth by what we accomplish, forgetting that the only thing that ever truly needed to be finished was finished two thousand years ago.

You do not have to earn your salvation. You do not have to prove your worth. You do not have to finish what Jesus has already declared complete.

Day 5

John 19:28
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

The Creator of the universe—the One who spoke water into existence, who split seas and summoned rain—expresses a physical need.

He who satisfied the thirst of thousands with a word now asks for a drink. He who is the Living Water becomes parched. The hands that formed galaxies cannot reach the cup. Someone must bring it to His lips.

_This is humility stripped bare._

_The Almighty becomes dependent. The Giver becomes the receiver._

If Jesus could admit His thirst—His need, His dependence—why do we pretend we have none? We pretend we are fine when we are empty. We hide our hunger behind busyness and our thirst behind accomplishment.

But Jesus shows us a different way: to name our need. To ask. To receive from others. To thirst for God like parched ground waiting for rain.

Day 4

About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
The darkest moment. Not the nails. Not the thorns. This lasted for three hours, darkness covered the land. And in that darkness, the Son cried out to the Father—and heard nothing.
Silence.

The One who had never been apart from the Father bore the full weight of separation. Your sin. My sin. The wall we built. He took it.

Not because God abandoned His Son in anger. But because Jesus refused to abandon us in our sin. He became the forsaken so we would never have to be.

If you have ever felt abandoned by God—if you have prayed into silence, questioned in the dark—you are not alone. The Son of God has been there. And He went there for you.

Day 3

John 19:26–27
Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby. He said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”
In the midst of agony—every breath a labor—Jesus looked down from the cross and saw two people who would soon be alone. Mary, watching her son die. John, about to lose his teacher and friend.

He could have focused only on his own suffering. Instead, he created family.
With a few words, he gave Mary a son and gave John a mother. He made sure neither would walk the road ahead alone.

Even at the end of his life, Jesus was building community.

If he cared this much about belonging while hanging on a cross, how much more should we?

Day 2

Luke 23:43
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” One criminal mocked. The other confessed: “We are punished justly. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he turned to Jesus and asked:

“Remember me.”

No baptism, church attendance, nor good works to offer. Just a desperate, last-minute plea from a man who knew he deserved nothing. And Jesus gave him everything. Not tomorrow. Not after purgatory. Today. Immediate, unearned, scandalous grace.
The thief had nothing to offer. That was exactly why he could receive everything.

My Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I am like the thief on the cross— deserving nothing, hanging next to grace.

There are parts of me I think are too far gone. Sins. Shame too deep. A lifetime of wrong turns that feel beyond repair. But You look at my empty hands and You do not ask for qualifications. You only ask that I turn to You. Remember me, I pray. Not because I have earned it. Because You are gracious. Let Your presence be with me today. Remind me of whose I am and let my mind be renewed that You are always with me. Amen.

Day 1

Luke 23:34
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
The first word from the cross is a prayer for the ones driving the nails. Not a curse. Not a cry for justice. Just. Forgiveness.

They knew exactly what they were doing—and still, Jesus said they did not know what they were doing. He saw beyond their actions to their blindness. He made space for mercy.

If Jesus could pray this for His executioners, what grudges am I still holding?

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
