The Rotary Club of Kuching is proud to be part of the launch of this exhibition, by our Guest of Honour, The Honourable Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak
Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak.
The exhibition is on-going at The Spring Mall until 27th September 2026.
Sarawak's story is often told through the lens of its own communities, but this exhibition reminds us that it was never written alone. From the liberation of 1945 to the long, quiet years of the Confrontation, the defence and recovery of this land were shared undertakings — between Sarawakians and Australians, between longhouses and battalions, between Iban Trackers and Commonwealth soldiers who came to call this jungle home.
Sixty years of peace since the 1966 agreement is not simply a milestone to mark and move past. It is a living inheritance — one built by people who chose reconciliation over resentment, and friendship over forgetting. For Sarawak, remembering this history honours those who served and sacrificed on our own soil, keeps their names and villages part of the national memory, and reminds the generations who never knew war just how deliberately peace must be built and protected.
Students from the Yayasan Sarawak International School, Petra Jaya, were appointed as Youth Peace Ambassadors and they recited the Peace Pledge. As part of Rotary's Focus Area for Peace & Conflict Resolution, these Youth Peace Ambassadors will now be our carriers and messengers for peace-building. As they rightfully shared during the event, "peace is not just the absence of war, but the protection of freedom for a meaningful and fulfilling life".
The students also performed an award-winning dance of the Tagal (Okolod) community. It was very very impressive! Well done to the dancers and the amount of practice they must have gone through to execute such an amazing performance!
