On Saturday Âûtsome Kuching came together with , and Siuman to host an interactive disability rights workshop at . We were also joined by a member of .
Together, we thought about our humanness. We thought about the concept of universal human rights, and where the holes are in current laws in Malaysia. In fact, some of these holes are so big that laws simply don't exist to fill them, like an Anti-Discrimination act that many other countries have adopted. This is amongst a severe lack in fundamental rights protection across the board.
Slowly, we must unite under our shared humanness, able bodied and disabled alike, to push for a more inclusive society. This benefits all of us. We all deserve to be able to go for our dream job, study our passion and feel that we belong in our community. No one should be stopped by the fact that they can't fit their wheelchair through the door, be unable to converse with people that don't know sign language, write us off because we don't make eye contact because we have Autism, or simply not be able to go and get groceries because the basic infrastructure and transport to do so doesn't exist.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but change begins at home. So here we are. We hope you'll join us.
