In conjunction with 🌍 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, Komuniti Pelindung Alam Sekitar Mersing (KomPAS) once again demonstrated its commitment to 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗴. 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘂 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝘁, 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴.

💚 Through a community-led rehabilitation effort, 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟬𝟵 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 were successfully planted, comprising:
🌿 209 Rhizophora mucronata
🌿 100 Avicennia spp.

🎯 This planting activity marks another important milestone in the ongoing restoration programme, bringing the cumulative total of mangrove trees planted under Phase 2 with the support of UNIQLO Malaysia to 1,534 trees! 🌳🌳🌳

🌎 Beyond increasing mangrove cover, this initiative contributes to:
✅ Strengthening coastal resilience
✅ Enhancing wildlife habitats 🐦🦀🐟
✅ Increasing carbon sequestration potential 🌱💨
✅ Supporting the long-term recovery of degraded coastal ecosystems 🌊

🤝 The continued dedication and active participation of KomPAS highlight the crucial role of local communities in driving sustainable conservation efforts and safeguarding Mersing's precious coastal environment for future generations.

🌱📚𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗦𝗧 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲🌍✨

In conjunction with 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, GEC was invited as one of the speakers at 𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗦𝗧 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, alongside representatives from PERHILITAN Kedah, WWF Malaysia, Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA).

𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗘𝗖, 𝗠𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝗮𝗳𝗶𝗾 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵, 𝗙𝗖𝗣 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿, delivered a one-hour knowledge sharing session titled “𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲.” The talk highlighted GEC’s ongoing mangrove rehabilitation efforts and climate adaptation initiatives implemented at both local and international levels.

During the interactive Q&A session, students showed strong interest in GEC’s work across 20 countries as well as volunteer opportunities in environmental conservation. The discussion encouraged greater awareness on the role of youth in community-based conservation and the importance of research that directly supports local communities.

🌍💚 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲! 💚🌍

This year, under the theme "𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻", we are reminded that nature is one of our greatest allies in addressing the climate crisis.

Protecting and restoring the vulnerable ecosystems is not only an investment in nature, but also a powerful climate solution!🤝

Under the Paris Agreement, the world agreed to limit the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Are we on track?
Not quite. In fact, we are crossing it.

About 10 years ago, climate change felt distant to many. Today, we can all feel its impacts i.e. extreme heat and droughts, more frequent floods and fires as well as other natural disasters affecting communities around the world.

But amid these challenges, climate solutions are also taking root across many sectors and communities.

From ecosystem restoration and sustainable land management to renewable energy and community-led initiatives. Meaningful efforts are happening, and they need to accelerate.

On this World Environment Day 2026, we are reminded that climate action cannot wait for tomorrow. The decisions and actions we take today will shape the future of our planet and generations to come.

📅 𝟭𝟵 - 𝟮𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

A group of 29 participants from TSWA, BTMMCG, Youth-BTMMCG, Thailand's Department of Coastal and Marine Resources (DMCR) and support personnel joined a four-day peer learning visit to Malaysia to exchange knowledge, experiences and best practices in community-based mangrove conservation.

The visit brought participants to Kuala Gula, Kuala Sepetang, Sungai Petani and Merbok, where they explored various conservation and sustainable livelihood initiatives, including 🌱 mangrove planting, 🦀 mud crab farming, 🌳 charcoal production, 🍯 stingless bee honey farming and community-based ecotourism. Cultural exchanges and appreciation ceremonies further strengthened the friendship and collaboration between Thai and Malaysian communities.

✨ One of the most inspiring moments was learning from Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kuala Gula (SHBKG) and Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kampung Taman Nilam (SHBKTN). From humble beginnings, these grassroots groups have evolved into successful community-led conservation champions. Their journey demonstrated how commitment, perseverance and collective action can create meaningful environmental and social impacts.

For the delegates from Ban Tha Malai, Satun, Thailand, this experience served as a powerful source of motivation and confidence, reinforcing their belief that local communities can drive positive change and build successful conservation initiatives in their own villages.

Participants were also inspired by the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, one of the world's best examples of sustainable mangrove management, which has been managed by the Perak State Forestry Department for nearly 120 years. The knowledge and experiences gained during the visit will support future conservation efforts in Ban Tha Malai ahead of the project's official launch in July 2026.

Wetlands are among the most valuable ecosystems on Earth, quietly supporting an incredible diversity of life while storing vast amounts of carbon and regulating water systems. From rare flora and fauna to IPLC livelihoods and climate resilience, healthy wetlands are essential for both people and nature.

Today, on the International Day for Biological Diversity, let us celebrate the richness of our wetlands and renew our commitment to protect, restore and sustainably manage these fragile ecosystems for future generations.

Global Environment Centre (GEC) was honoured to participate in the exhibition held in conjunction with the Majlis Perasmian Eksplorasi Biodiversiti di Rangkaian Central Forest Spine at Hutan Simpan Lenggor and Hutan Simpan Mersing, officiated by YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim bin Syed Noh, Deputy Minister of NRES.

A total of 42 participants from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), and Global Environment Centre (GEC) came together for the 4th consecutive annual educational visit to Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR). 🌏💚

The programme began with an engaging introduction to the importance of peatlands, followed by immersive field-based learning activities. Participants explored peatland restoration techniques including mound planting, while gaining hands-on experience in tree dendrometric measurements and water table monitoring using piezometers, highlighting the critical role of hydrology in maintaining healthy peat ecosystems. 🌱💧

🔥 Participants were also exposed to forest fire prevention strategies and community-based restoration initiatives. From the watchtower, they observed the visible impact of long-term rehabilitation efforts across the landscape. A practical peat soil classification session further enriched their understanding of peatland ecosystems and their ecological significance.

🌿 At GEC-CoSPeC, participants engaged in discussions on Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and Nature-based Solutions (NbS), demonstrating how healthy ecosystems contribute to climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods. The visit to the SHGSU Community Nursery also highlighted the important role of local communities in restoration and conservation initiatives. 🤝

The programme served as a meaningful platform for knowledge exchange, experiential learning, and strengthening collaboration, while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards dedicated to protecting our natural ecosystems. 🌏✨

On 15 May 2026, a Cooperative Management and Governance Training was successfully conducted at the Temuan Culture Information Centre (TCIC) in collaboration with Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (SKM). The programme brought together 27 participants comprising SKM representatives, community groups including KWHSTS, SHBPTS and SGAT, GEC staff and interns. 🌿

The session was officiated by Ms. Aniza Ziana, Head of TCIC, together with Mr. Prem, FCP Coordinator, who highlighted the importance of strengthening community capacity through cooperative approaches and valued collaboration with SKM. ✨

📚 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱:
🔹 Introduction to SKM’s roles, cooperative establishment and registration requirements
🔹 Grants, financial assistance schemes and support mechanisms available for cooperatives

The programme concluded with community sharing sessions and a closing ceremony, with appreciation extended to SKM and all participants for their active engagement and meaningful discussions. 🙌

This initiative enhanced participants’ understanding of cooperative governance and management, while equipping communities with practical knowledge to implement cooperative-driven initiatives more effectively. The programme also provided valuable exposure to broader community development efforts under YH funding, supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth across participating communities. 🌏💚
