Event Recap | Book Launch

An evening of ideas, dialogue, and thoughtful debate.

The Islam and Liberty Network (ILN) proudly hosted the launch of the Urdu translation of Mustafa Akyol's Why, as a Muslim, I Defend Liberty (کیوں، بطور مسلمان، میں آزادی کا دفاع کرتا ہوں) at the Prime Institute, Islamabad, in a hybrid event attended by scholars, academics, students, and policy professionals.

The discussion explored the relationship between Islam and liberty, examining themes of freedom of conscience, human dignity, free expression, the rule of law, and the rich intellectual heritage of the Muslim world. Author Mustafa Akyol, translator Fida Ur Rehman, Chief Guest Khurshid Ahmad Nadeem, and moderator Dr. Ali Salman engaged with important questions from the audience, fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas on faith, reform, and the future of Muslim societies.

We thank all our distinguished speakers, guests, and participants—both in person and online—for making this event a success. Together, we continue to create spaces for informed dialogue and intellectual engagement.

Stay connected with ILN for more conversations that challenge assumptions, inspire critical thinking, and advance the values of liberty and human dignity.

Ideas shape institutions—and institutions shape societies.

This edition of Edraak News explores how the Muslim world continues to interpret tradition in profoundly different ways. From the OIC's challenge to Taliban restrictions on women, to Syria's constitutional transition, Uzbekistan's institutionalization of Islamic finance, and the legacy of Professor John L. Esposito, this fortnight's developments reveal that the future of Muslim societies is being shaped not only by political events, but by competing interpretations of faith, law, governance, and human dignity.

Swipe through our latest carousel to explore the key developments across four zones of the Muslim world and discover how ideas continue to influence institutions, policy, and reform.

Dr. Abdelkader is the director of the Peace and Conflict Studies program. She is the author of the book The Forgotten Khayr al-Din al-Tunsi's Islamic Social Contract Governance, Public Welfare and Justice.
This book confronts the longstanding marginalization of Muslim thought within political theory, highlighting the epistemological assumptions that have elevated Western intellectual traditions while overlooking the rich political heritage of the Islamic world. Focusing on the nineteenth-century reformer Khayr al-Din al-Tunsi, it presents the first in-depth study and translation of his political writings, interpreting them through the framework of Islamic jurisprudence, particularly the Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿa (Objectives of Islamic Law).

The violence that is dismissed as a private matter has significant implications not only for women in the country but also for its economy. According to a 2024 study published in Archives of Public Health, out of 404 interviewed women who had either experienced emotional, physical, sexual, or economic abuse, 80.2% of them reported mental disorders, gynaecological trauma, physical trauma, or behavioural trauma, while some even reported having more than one of the aforementioned conditions.
