The Bar Council Child Rights Committee (“BCCRC”) and the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Children’s Rights ("APPGM-CR"), with technical advisory support from Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, "SUHAKAM"), jointly organised a symposium titled “Legal Symposium on Children’s Rights to Access to Justice and Effective Remedies” on 10 June 2026 at Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia to highlight key developments in Malaysia and the region, including gaps that remain to be addressed following the recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (“CRC”) during its review of Malaysia.

The symposium featured a combination of presentations, case studies and interactive panel discussions, providing the participants with the opportunity to engage with pressing child rights issues in Malaysia. These include access to justice, harmful practices affecting children and the role of the Malaysian Judiciary and legal institutions in safeguarding children’s rights, in line with the CRC’s general comment No. 27 on children’s rights to access to justice and to an effective remedy.


The programme featured distinguished guests and speakers, as follows:

The Judiciary also exhibited its Mobile Children’s Court and Mobile Child Witness Vehicle on the ground floor of the venue, providing the participants and members of the media with an opportunity to gain insight into child-friendly justice initiatives and the administration of justice for children in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Bar was pleased to attend a meeting with the Council of Deans of Law of Public Universities on 22 May 2026 at the Department of Higher Education, Putrajaya.

Representing the Malaysian Bar were Karthigesan Shanmugam, Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Legal Education Committee and Vilashini Vijayan, Director of the Malaysian Bar Secretariat.

The discussions focused on developments in legal education, current trends in the legal profession, and strengthening collaboration between the Malaysian Bar and the Council of Deans in preparing future legal practitioners.

The Malaysian Bar looks forward to continued engagement in advancing legal education and the profession.

On 10 June 2026, Karthigesan Shanmugam, Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Industrial and Employment Law Committee and Saunthriah Nagarasu, Officer of the Malaysian Bar Secretariat attended the Fair Employment Code Luncheon Dialogue at Cypark Resources Berhad, Kuala Lumpur.

The dialogue, organised by CEO Action Network and Architects of Diversity, brought together stakeholders from the corporate sector, civil society and government to discuss the development of a voluntary Fair Employment Code. The discussions focused on the maturity of organisations’ diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, existing fair employment practices, the potential utility and challenges of a Fair Employment Code, and opportunities for stakeholders to contribute towards its development.

The Bar Council Industrial and Employment Law Committee was pleased to participate in these important discussions on advancing fair and inclusive employment practices in Malaysia.

On 9 June 2026, the Malaysian Bar had the pleasure of receiving a courtesy visit from a delegation from the All China Lawyers Association (“ACLA”), led by Zheng Jindu, Vice President of ACLA.

Anand Raj, President of the Malaysian Bar welcomed the delegation together with R Jayabalan, Secretary of the Malaysian Bar; Peter-Douglas Ling, Treasurer of the Malaysian Bar; as well as Dato’ Azmi b Mohd Ali and Kee Hui Yee, members of the Bar Council.

In addition, the following were present at the ACLA-requested courtesy visit:

(1) Karen Cheah Yee Lynn, Co-Chairperson, Bar Council International Affairs Committee;
(2) Jalalullail Othman, Co-Deputy Chairperson, Bar Council International Affairs Committee;

The discussions covered the respective structures of the Malaysian Bar and ACLA, avenues for enhanced professional collaboration, and opportunities to foster greater exchange and engagement among young lawyers.
