“Benjamin’s Letter to God”
Little Benjamin, a bright and curious 6-year-old, sat at his small wooden desk one quiet evening. His heart was full of longing — he wanted a baby sister more than anything.
He picked up his pencil and began his letter:
> “Dear God, I’ve been a very good boy.”
He paused.
Benjamin frowned and thought for a while. Hmm… maybe not all the time.
He tore up the paper, crumpled it, and tried again:
> “Dear God, most of the time I’ve been a good boy.”
Again, he hesitated. He knew deep down that honesty mattered, and this still didn’t sound right. Another piece of paper went into the trash.
Then, with a spark of mischief and determination, Benjamin walked to the altar where his family prayed. On it stood a small statue of Mary, which his mother often dusted with gentle care. His parents had always told him, “You may look, but never touch.”
But tonight felt different. Benjamin softly lifted the statue, wrapped it carefully in a clean towel, and secured it with a rubber band. He placed it next to his letter paper, took a deep breath, and wrote his third attempt:
> “Dear God, if you ever want to see your mother again…”
He looked at what he wrote, then smiled — not in mischief, but in the innocent, playful logic of a child who believed God truly listened.
That night, Benjamin’s mother found him asleep beside the letter, the towel gently unwrapped, and the statue of Mary safely placed back on the altar. She smiled through tears, realizing that her little boy’s heart was learning — not manipulation, but faith, creativity, and a longing to be heard by God.
