Yayasan Chow Kit is a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre providing meals, activities, therapy, case management, and educational programmes for at-risk children of Chow Kit. n 2006, what started out as an expansion of a government-run day care centre, grew into a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre, providing meals, activities, therapy, case management, and educational programmes for at-risk children

of Chow Kit. Four years later, there are now additional two centres providing quality care and services to children ranging from babies to young adults. Our experience of working at the grassroots level has led to the discovery of an array of multi-faceted socio-cultural issues affecting such diverse groups of people living in Chow Kit. Realising that in order to provide a better facilitation of issues the community is facing, it paved the way for an establishment of an organisation that is based within the area in addition to having a structured and sustainable development of community-based programmes. Thus that was how Rumah NurSalam, in its previous incarnation as a project under Yayasan Salam, has now become an entity in its own right, in the form of Yayasan Chow Kit, established in January 2011. The foundation’s vision ‘to improve the lives of at-risk children and youth’ has aptly summed up our aspirations for the community we serve in Chow Kit.

“You cannot pour from an empty cup. When we care for ourselves, we create more capacity to care for others.” 🚰🫗⛲

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Karthigesu Sivalingam for sharing your wisdom on health and well-being with us during our Growth Day on Monday. 🌱

Your session was truly an eye-opener and a beautiful reminder that our health matters too, especially for those of us who spend our days caring for and protecting others.

We are deeply grateful that you generously gave your time and conducted this session pro-bono in support of YCK’s cause and mission in Child Protection. 💛💙💚

Because a team that takes care of themselves is a team that can show up stronger, serve better, and make a greater difference in the lives of the children we work with.

Take care of yourself. Grow together. Serve with purpose. 🌱❤️

Thank you, Dr. Karthigesu! 🙏

🌱 A New Beginning in Child Protection 🚸

Today marks the beginning of what we hope will be a meaningful and transformative partnership with the JKM Wilayah team of Pelindung, led by Ms Nithia.

At YCK, we believe child protection cannot be carried by one organisation, one agency or one person. It takes an ecosystem. 🤝

We are truly grateful for this partnership and look forward to building a co-interdependent model. One where we can seek support from JKM when we need it, while also supporting JKM where we can.

Because collaboration should never be about “what can you do for us?” but rather, “how can we help each other do better for children?” 😊

Our dream is to build a healthy, connected ecosystem where all Child Protection agents of change (government, NGOs, communities, professionals, families and advocates) come together around one shared mission:

❤️ CHILDREN ❤️

Different roles. Different strengths.
One ecosystem. One purpose. One mission — protecting every child.

Temporary safety is not the end of the journey. For Azira and her family, they still need a way home. 🏡 (Identities concealed to maintain their security)

At just 16 years old, Azira has already experienced circumstances no child should have to face.

Azira is the eldest of three sisters. Originally from Indonesia, she lives with her mother and two younger sisters. She has never had the opportunity to attend formal school which was one of her simplest hopes for her future.

While living with her stepfather, Azira and her mother experienced repeated physical abuse. When Azira expressed her wish to go to school, the situation escalated, and the mother and her three daughters were eventually forced out of their home.

With nowhere safe to go, the family became homeless and increasingly vulnerable.

It was Azira who reached out and shared that her family had nowhere safe to turn. ✊🏽

Thankfully, after their circumstances were assessed and verified, the family was able to secure temporary shelter. Today, Azira, her mother and her two younger sisters are in a safer environment. 😌

But temporary shelter cannot be their long-term solution.

Azira's mother has made the decision to return to Indonesia with her children, where they hope to begin rebuilding their lives with the support of relatives there. ❤️

Yayasan Chow Kit is supporting the family through this process. We have been coordinating with the Indonesian Embassy and shelter services to work through the necessary procedures for their safe repatriation, while efforts are also being made to connect with relatives in Indonesia who may be able to support their return and reintegration. 🫂

Now, we need your help to overcome the final practical barriers standing between this family and a safe journey home.

RM6,400 can help Azira and her family return safely.

✈️ RM3,500 — Travel documentation, overstay fees and passport/travel permit-related expenses
✈️ RM2,000 — Estimated one-way flights from Kuala Lumpur to Indonesia for the mother and three children
🥤 RM300 — Food, drinks, luggage and essential travel necessities
💛 RM300 — Essential cash assistance upon arrival
🛟 RM300 — Contingency for unforeseen administrative or travel expenses

For this family, getting away from violence was only the first step.

Now, they need a safe way forward.

If you are able to contribute, your donation can help turn temporary protection into a safe journey home, giving Azira, her mother and her sisters the opportunity to return to Indonesia and begin rebuilding their lives together.

And if you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign can be just as meaningful. Someone in your network may be able to help.

🙏🏾 Please help Azira and her family take their next step toward safety.

The Science and Mathematics Exploration Day was held last week which gave all our students the opportunity to learn Science and Mathematics in a fun, practical and interactive way. 🧑🏽‍🔬🧮

All secondary students, together with six selected primary students, prepared six STEM products based on topics of their choice. The Science topics were photosynthesis, types of animals such as carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, and digestion. The Mathematics topics were fractions, clocks and shapes. 📐📏➗

During the programme, the other primary students took part as participants. They visited each station, listened to the explanations and played educational games based on the products. The students who created the products acted as young teachers by explaining their topics and guiding the younger students through the activities.🧑🏽‍🏫

A student committee, known as AJK, was also assigned to help manage the programme and ensure that all activities ran smoothly. At the end of the programme, appreciation prizes were given to all students involved as a token of thanks for their effort, teamwork and participation. 🥉🥇🏆

Overall, the programme was an enjoyable and meaningful experience. It helped students build confidence, improve their communication and teamwork skills, and develop a greater interest in Science, Mathematics and STEM. 🧠📚

For URGENT life saving chemo treatment!!
At just **17 years old**, Rah is fighting leukemia.

Pictures of faces covered to protect their privacy. 🙏🏾

While she needs to undergo regular chemotherapy and ongoing treatment at Hospital Tunku Azizah, her family is doing everything they can to stand beside her.

Our social workers went by to meet with Rah's father, who earns a living through grass-cutting jobs, often has to give up a day's income just to accompany his daughter for treatment. As the sole breadwinner for a family with five children, every hospital visit brings both hope and financial strain.

Today, as much as we can, we're raising **RM50,000** to help cover treatment-related expenses, transportation, medications and essential support throughout his recovery as every cent that gets her her next course of treatment can be life-saving! ❤️‍🩹

No teenager should have to worry about whether financial hardship will stand between them and the treatment they need.

Wherever you or anyone you know is able to, we invite you to be part of her journey.

Every contribution makes a difference. 🙏🏾

We were delighted to welcome the Singapore Children’s Society to Yayasan Chow Kit for a meaningful exchange on our work with children and families. Singapore Children's Society

The visit provided an opportunity to share our respective contexts, programmes, and the challenges we encounter in supporting children at risk. We also exchanged ideas on different approaches to child protection, family support, and community-based interventions, while exploring potential areas for future collaboration and learning. 🤝🏾

We are grateful for the open conversations and look forward to strengthening connections that contribute to better outcomes for children across the region. 🤩🇲🇾🇸🇬

Behind every school bag is a child with dreams.

For Dyah and Syah, those dreams are being held together by a mother doing everything she can.

Working as a supermarket cashier, Ms. Zah raises her two children alone while also caring for Dyah, who is undergoing ongoing medical treatment at Hospital Selayang after doctors discovered a growth in her head that requires regular monitoring that has placed an immense strain on the family's finances.

Even with all her efforts, balancing rent, food, medical expenses and school costs has become overwhelming.

Today, we're hoping to lighten that burden.

With RM6,568, we can provide both children with a year's worth of school essentials and daily school allowances, helping them continue their education with confidence.

Education should never become another obstacle for a child already facing life's challenges.

If you'd like to help Dyah and Syah stay focused on learning instead of financial hardship, we'd be deeply grateful for your support.

❤️ Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference.

🎉🎂 What a joyful day at the centre it's been today! Today, we celebrated the birthdays of all our amazing children born over the past six months. Seeing their smiles and excitement made every moment truly special. ❤️

The theme of the day was identity in fantasy as we were all encouraged to come as our favourite fictional character! 🧚🏽🧝🏽🧞 Which made it so much more fun to get to know what was so endearing about each of these fictional characters to each of these personal characters that we know and see in our centres day to day, be it amongst the staff or the kids! 🥰

A heartfelt thank you to Susan Chin for generously sponsoring six beautiful birthday cakes! Your kindness and generosity made this celebration even sweeter and created wonderful memories for the children. 🙏🏾💕

Happy Birthday to all our birthday stars! May your year ahead be filled with love, laughter, and endless happiness. 🥳🎈🎁

Building safer communities starts with reaching children where they are. 🏫

Some weeks ago, our social workers had the privilege of visiting SMK Sentul Utama, where we conducted our Safe Touch Programme with 188 Form 1 students.

Through interactive discussions and activities, we explored the importance of recognising safe and unsafe touch, understanding personal boundaries, and knowing how and where to seek help when something doesn't feel right. We also introduced students to the services provided by Yayasan Chow Kit, ensuring they know that support is available whenever they need it.

Every outreach is unique. Before each session, we work closely with schools to understand the needs of their students, allowing us to tailor our programmes to address the issues that matter most to them. We are especially grateful to the teachers and school staff at SMK Sentul Utama for their openness, encouragement, and collaboration in helping us create a meaningful and engaging session.

Our outreach programmes are a core part of Yayasan Chow Kit's commitment to child protection and early intervention. Each month, we work with schools, following the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Education to deliver programmes that empower children with knowledge and practical skills to stay safe. Beyond Safe Touch, our outreach will keep striving to cover topics such as child safeguarding, personal safety, emotional wellbeing, and parenting awareness to help build stronger support systems around every child.

Because protecting children isn't only about responding when something goes wrong, but also about equipping them, their families, and their communities with the knowledge and confidence to prevent harm before it happens.

Thank you once again to SMK Sentul Utama for welcoming us. We look forward to reaching many more children, one school at a time. 💛
