Yayasan Chow Kit is a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre providing meals, activities, therapy, case management, ​and educational programmes for at-risk children of Chow Kit. n 2006, what started out as an expansion of a government-run day care centre, grew into a 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre, providing meals, activities, therapy, case management, and educational programmes for at-risk children of Chow Kit. Four years later, there are now additional two centres providing quality care and services to children ranging from babies to young adults. Our experience of working at the grassroots level has led to the discovery of an array of multi-faceted socio-cultural issues affecting such diverse groups of people living in Chow Kit. Realising that in order to provide a better facilitation of issues the community is facing, it paved the way for an establishment of an organisation that is based within the area in addition to having a structured and sustainable development of community-based programmes. Thus that was how Rumah NurSalam, in its previous incarnation as a project under Yayasan Salam, has now become an entity in its own right, in the form of Yayasan Chow Kit, established in January 2011. The foundation’s vision ‘to improve the lives of at-risk children and youth’ has aptly summed up our aspirations for the community we serve in Chow Kit.

🇲🇾 Behind every stronger community are people who care. This Malaysia Day, we shine a light on the social workers who walk alongside children and families every day.

As we celebrate Malaysia Day, we reflect on what makes a nation more than just a place we call home. 🏡

It is the people who care for one another. The communities that come together. The many everyday acts of kindness, support and solidarity that help create a safer, more inclusive Malaysia for everyone. 🫂🤗

At Yayasan Chow Kit, our Social Work team is part of that journey. 🛣️

Every day, our social workers walk alongside children and families, helping them access the support, opportunities and essential services they need to grow and thrive. 🫶🏽

In 2025, our team delivered more than 2,000 interventions, helping children and families access education, birth registration, healthcare, sexual and reproductive health services, mental health support and more. 🤱🏽🙂‍↕️🌱📚🚸

Behind every intervention is a story.

Some days involve coordinating assistance, connecting families with services and working through the details that make support possible. Other days mean responding to emergencies, visiting families in the community or creating awareness about issues that affect children's safety and well-being. 🧷🆘🫡

And through it all, our social workers continue to walk alongside children, caregivers and families, strengthening child safety, supporting family-based care and helping create opportunities for children to build a better future. 🔮

These efforts may not always be visible, but they matter. ✨

Because when children are supported, families are stronger. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

When families are stronger, communities are stronger. 🤝🏾🫶🏽

And when communities come together to care for one another, Malaysia becomes stronger. 🇲🇾✊🏽

This Malaysia Day, we celebrate the people who make a difference through their everyday acts of care, and the children and families who inspire us to keep doing this work!!

From return to reintegration: making sure no one is left behind.

On 10–11 August, Yayasan Chow Kit joined civil society, migrant-worker organisations, governments and international partners from across Southeast Asia at the IOM Regional Workshop on Return and Reintegration of Migrant Workers and Victims of Trafficking in Manila.

A key message resonated throughout the two days: reintegration cannot end at rescue or return.

For survivors, rebuilding a life can mean safety, recovery, psychosocial wellbeing, family and community support, documentation, education, access to justice and sustainable livelihoods. It also means ensuring that the systems around them are strong enough to prevent re-trafficking and further exploitation.

Discussions highlighted the need for stronger cross-border referral mechanisms, continuity of care, survivor-centred and gender-responsive approaches, child-sensitive return processes, and greater collaboration between governments, CSOs, migrant-led and survivor-led organisations.

For Malaysia, this conversation is particularly important. As a destination and transit country, we must look beyond identification, rescue and return towards safety, longer-term recovery, protection and reintegration, including for children, refugees, stateless persons and others facing barriers to documentation and essential services.

YCK is committed to bringing a child-rights and protection lens to these regional conversations, and to strengthening partnerships that can help ensure that at-risk and
affected children and families receive the protection and support they need before, during and after cross-border movement.

Because a person is not simply returned. They must be supported to return safely, recover with dignity, and rebuild with stability and agency.

She’s growing. She’s standing. She’s finding her little steps in the world. 👣

But Nur Asmah still really needs our help. 🙏🏽

It’s been a little while since we last shared her story, and we’re reaching out again because we have barely made a dent in the RM12,000 needed for her essential medical care. 🥺

At just three and a half years old, Asmah has already been through more than most children should.

Born with a cleft palate and significant ear abnormalities, she spent her first three months in intensive care after developing pneumonia. She continues to live with complex medical needs, including difficulties with swallowing and hearing, and relies on a permanent feeding tube for nutrition.

She has also been fitted with a bone conduction hearing aid, helping her hear and connect with the world around her. 🦻🏽

And now, as you can see from these new pictures, she's standing and growing. 🐣

There is still more ahead.

Asmah's possible operation is currently planned for November 2026, and we are hoping to raise RM12,000 towards the essential treatment and care she needs by then! 🙏🏽

Today, we're asking for a little help to get her there.

For many of us, Friday is a special day to give, share and extend kindness to others. But this is also a call to anyone who believes that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, supported and cared for. 🤱🏽

Just another throwback to the events on merdeka weekend as we continue to embrace this season of national celebration! 🎆🥳🇲🇾

On 31st August, our kids were found singing patriotic songs, answering Merdeka quizzes with excitement, guessing Malaysian states, and creating Merdeka-themed masks (which were all proudly presented by their respective artists!) 🧑🏽‍🎨

More than just a celebration, the programme helped to strengthen their sense of patriotism, unity and appreciation for Malaysia's diversity. Through these activities, they had the opportunity to learn more about the country they love, express their creativity, build teamwork and strengthen the spirit of unity and patriotism which is ever present in each of these children that can only strive to make this nation proud. It was a joyful celebration filled with laughter, learning and togetherness! 🇲🇾🫂🫶🏽🤗 🎉

Honouring a legacy of compassion, service, and humanity.

In conjunction with our own season of national independence, we thought we felt like throwing it back to International Nelson Mandela Day when we were honoured to welcome the South African High Commission for a meaningful morning dedicated to giving back through the spirit of volunteerism. 🇿🇦🌱🇲🇾

Inspired by Nelson Mandela's belief that "It is in your hands to make the world a better place," volunteers spent 67 minutes of service commemorating his 67 years of public service sharing smiles, creativity, and kindness with our children and young people.

We're so grateful to have South African High Commission for choose us as their partner in celebrating this special day. Their time, dedication, and generosity remind us that even the smallest acts of service can create a lasting impact. ✊🏽🕊️

Together, we continue to prove that every action counts, every helping hand matters, and every heart has the power to make a difference. ❤️🫂

🇲🇾 THIS MERDEKA, SOME CHILDREN JUST WANT TO GO HOME.

This long weekend, many of us will be doing something that feels completely ordinary.

Going home.

Going back to our hometowns.
Having dinner with family.
Seeing our parents.
Sleeping in our own beds.

We don't always stop to think about how precious that is.

But for some children, home isn't somewhere they can simply return to.

Sixteen-year-old Azira and her family have experienced violence, displacement and homelessness. They have found temporary safety, but now need help to return to Indonesia and be reunited with family.

Just as much as the rest of the children we serve, Arianna and her brother are hoping for something just as simple:

To be reunited with their mother.

Different stories.

Different circumstances.

But the same hope.

🏠 A safe place to call home.
❤️ A family to come home to.
🤝 A chance to begin again.

This Merdeka, perhaps freedom can mean something very simple.

The freedom to feel safe.

The freedom to belong.

The freedom to go home.

From designing tote bags, keychains, fridge magnets, and other handcrafted prints, every activity encouraged creativity, imagination, and self-expression while introducing them to the beauty of local arts and heritage. 🧑🏽‍🎨

For Keziah Nisha, and every child who deserves to feel safe at school. 🕊️

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Keziah Nisha, a 14-year-old child whose life has been tragically cut short.

No parent should ever have to bury their child.

Reports surrounding Keziah’s death have raised serious concerns about bullying and alleged racial remarks at school. These matters must be investigated thoroughly, independently and transparently. While the facts must be established, we must also ask whether the systems around her were strong enough to recognise the warning signs and protect her.

At Yayasan Chow Kit, we believe bullying is not simply a school discipline issue it is a child protection issue.

Malaysia has taken an important step with the Anti-Bullying Act 2026 and the establishment of the Anti-Bullying Tribunal. But a law is only meaningful if it results in real protection for children.

We call on the Government and Ministry of Education to ensure:

• Every school has a safe, confidential and child-friendly reporting mechanism.
• All bullying complaints are properly recorded, investigated and followed up.
• Teachers, counsellors and school leaders receive proper training in bullying, racism, psychological abuse, cyberbullying and child safeguarding.
• Children who speak up are protected from retaliation and further harm.
• Schools are accountable when serious concerns are ignored or inadequately addressed.
• Children themselves have a meaningful voice in shaping the systems designed to protect them.

We must stop telling children to simply “be stronger” or “ignore it.”

The responsibility for keeping children safe belongs to the adults and institutions around them.

Children deserve protection, not survival skills.

Keziah’s death must not become another heartbreaking headline that fades from memory. It must be a catalyst for meaningful reform and safer schools.

To Keziah’s family, Yayasan Chow Kit stands with you in your grief. We extend our deepest sympathy to everyone who loved her.

What a privilege and blessing it has been for YCK to work alongside Dr. Farah Nini Dusuki, Child Commissioner of SUHAKAM, in championing the rights, safety, and wellbeing of children.

Dr. Farah Nini is not only a passionate advocate for children but also a leader who brings compassion, wisdom, integrity, and an unwavering sense of purpose to every conversation and initiative. Her ability to listen, inspire collaboration, and turn ideas into meaningful action has made a lasting impact on everyone who has had the opportunity to work with her.

Over the years, YCK has been deeply encouraged by her genuine commitment to ensuring that every child is protected, respected, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
