Is Malaysia getting hotter, and hotter? Undoubtedly so. With increasing climate change and deforestation, we sit in a pot while turning up the heat. But it doesn't have to continue this way.

By protecting our forests and reversing what we have done to remove the green from our world, we can stop this climate countdown, and of course, save ourselves the sweat.

On the first anniversary of Nature Reads, the show that explores the stories behind books that bring us closer to nature and the world around us, host Juliet Jacobs sat with guests Ir. Dr. Kribanandan G Naidu, Immediate Past President of Friends of Bukit Kiara (FOBK), together with co-host Dylan Jefri Ong, co-founder of Sunda Shelves.

In this special podcast, our immediate past president Dr. Kriban balances science with history to show exactly why this forest is worth fighting for. He shares about his personal journey learning sustainability in the rural lands of Botswana, the books that have left an impact, and trace his 30-year journey being part of the team that advocates tirelessly to ensure Bukit Kiara remains a sanctuary for generations to come.

This episode also ties in with the fact that the second edition of “Bukit Kiara: A Sanctuary in the City”, the FoBK Booklet, can now be found at .shelves !

🌿 Flora of the Day: Keruing (Dipterocarpus) 🌿

Meet Keruing, a towering tropical hardwood tree that forms part of Southeast Asia’s iconic dipterocarp forests. With its tall straight trunk and broad canopy, it plays a major role in shaping the structure of lowland rainforests.

Keruing produces distinctive winged fruits that spin as they fall, helping seeds disperse naturally across the forest floor.

Beyond its ecological importance, its durable timber has long been valued for construction and heavy-duty applications. A true giant quietly supporting forest biodiversity. 🌱

Fallen leaves aren’t dead leaves, instead they play the crucial role in a bigger cycle of regenerating life. The underground is a systemic harbour of more life than what meets the eye - much like the ocean - and perhaps it is time we do more to appreciate and protect the land we walk on. The simplest way in doing so is to start by leaving the leaves.

This is Projek Solarpunk - a series dedicated to addressing the modern nuances and challenges we face as a society, big and small, as we increasingly progress into a world of technological advancement. This series is a declaration of how urban problems arise as result to our detachment from the natural world, and how we can resolve such problems by reconstructing our relationship back with the environment, rather than excluding it.

And remember, even though the movement was brought to life under science fiction literature, it doesn’t have to just continue existing in books.

Tucked away among the leaf litter and tree bases of Bukit Kiara 🌿🐍

These forest snakes are easy to miss — from the large, nocturnal Dog-toothed Cat Snake resting silently on tree trunks, to the tiny Dwarf Reed Snake slipping unnoticed through the forest floor.

After dark, the Common Wolf Snake becomes active, while the Equatorial Spitting Cobra stays alert, relying on defence rather than disguise. 🌿🐍

Take a moment to pause and observe, and you’ll see how each of these snakes fits quietly into the rhythm of the forest, helping keep the ecosystem in balance ✨

The battle for Klang Valley’s green spaces against green lung destruction is something that stretches far beyond Bukit Kiara’s own trails. Be it in Shah Alam, Kota Damansara, or Wangsa Maju, advocates work tirelessly to protect what little nature is left.

In this podcast featuring Adri and Inci from , we can’t help but nod our heads at the parallels between common problems faced by our sister organisation.
