Since May 2026, we have been hosting a monthly guided trail hike. The goal: to teach interested hikers how to navigate safely and confidently in trails using available apps.

The skills learned in Bukit Kiara can then be applied anywhere. The hills and mountains of Malaysia (and beyond!) become a hiker’s playground once you reduce the fear of getting lost.

A huge thanks to our Trails Vertical volunteers who selflessly give their time, expertise and energy to bring this activity to life! Being a volunteer-run NGO, FoBK is powered by everyday people and their love for nature and community - something we don’t take for granted and are deeply grateful for.

If you’d like to learn more about volunteering or how you can support our cause further, DM us now. Even if you’re not a hiker, we’ll love to chat and find ways to see how we can collaborate.

Thank you to Climate Governance Malaysia Climate Governance Malaysia for having us at the National Climate Governance Summit 2026 in the very apt panel discussion, “Business v Nature: Who Wins and When” together with FT Minister, YB Hannah Yeoh Hannah Yeoh

The panel explored how to balance between development and conservation with reference to the Save Taman Rimba Kiara movement and recent efforts at gazetting green spaces in KL and overhauling DBKL’s approach to developers. But we stand by what we’ve said — we have gone past the tipping point.

The truth is that development has already pushed way past the balance point against conservation. The scales tipped a long time ago, and we cannot keep operating on a severe environmental deficit.

If we want to protect what is left of our natural ecosystems, we have to radically re-evaluate urban development.

As FoBK President, Tan Boon Hua said, “engineering can only solve so much ultimately. Nature actually has the solution for us, if we care to to utilise them.”

We are in Malaysia’s report to the world.

Friends of Bukit Kiara is featured in the 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity, launched by NRES in June. It includes our Magical Mysteries at Bukit Kiara (MMaBK) firefly citizen science programme and the 2025 rediscovery of the rare Gombak bent-winged firefly discovered on our own hill.

That rediscovery belongs to a lot of hands. Thank you to

• Tan Wei Jack Tan Wei Jack and the Monash Firefly Lab Monash University Malaysia under Dr Wan F A Jusoh Wan F. A. Jusoh as well as Jabatan Landskap Negara Jabatan Landskap Negara for the continued collaboration

• UNDP and the GEF Small Grants Programme for kickstarting MMaBK back in 2021

• And to everyone of our citizen scientist who has walked the trails after dark in our firefly surveys.

We are featured together with other good company like Friends of Bukit Dinding, Shah Alam Community Forest (SACF) & Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur (Pulai Trail) that tackle similar issues of over-development, protection of green spaces and encouraging environmental stewardship.

A shoutout as well to Malaysian Nature Society Rantaian Urban Green Spaces that proposes a possible pathway for the future of urban biodiversity protection.

Sign up to our programmes and get involved! Be it our firefly surveys, trail walks or firefly/herpetofauna walks, Bukit Kiara is open to all and no prior experience is needed.

Since the reopening of Lembah Kiara, there have been news circulating about the park upgrades and what exactly happened during the two-year park closure.

In YB Hannah Yeoh’s walkabout on 4 June 2026 with JLN and JPS, she clarified the actual breakdown of the project’s costs and utilisation which are as follows:

💧 RM3.3 Mil: Repairing and upgrading water retention ponds, waterfalls, and stream drainage.
💡 RM2.5 Mil: Electrical works, underground utilities, and replacing 233 street lamp posts.
🌷 RM700,000: Landscaping, upgrading pedestrian walkways, and repairing two gazebos.

But upgrading works in Lembah Kiara will continue!

On 7 July 2026, FoBK and TTDI RA had a walkabout with JLN who shared about upcoming maintenance works planned for Zon Rekreasi Keluarga Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara. Above are our highlights.

We look forward to further collaboration with residents and authorities to maintain the essential infrastructure for our beautiful green lung.

💡 Fireflies Liight Up Human Futures 💡

This World Firefly Day, FoBK is celebrating the incredible fireflies that live in our urban forest including the world’s biggest firefly, the Lamprigera, as well as the rare Pteroptyx gombakia (the Gombak bent-winged firefly), rediscovered here after a century.

This vital conservation work is fueled by our partnership with researchers like Fathan Anandadzikra Muharraran (Fathan Muharraran), Tan Wei Jack (Tan Wei Jack), and Nicholas HL Tan (The Budget Scientist) alongside global insights from the IUCN SSC Firefly Specialist Group (IUCN SSC Firefly Specialist Group).

Together, we are working to understand more about this mysterious creatures and protect them from major threats that include light pollution, habitat loss and pesticides and pollution.

Here’s how to be a friend to these flying friends:
- Dim the lights: Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights or switch to low-intensity lighting to minimise artificial night lighting
- Leave the leaf litter: This a vital ecosystem for the firefly larva
- Be a Citizen Scientist: Join FoBK’s night surveys to help us collect crucial data that goes towards the long-term advocacy and protection of Bukit Kiara.
