Standing together in Sandakan today, we remembered our shared history as we honoured the prisoners of war who suffered and died in the Sandakan-Ranau Death Marches, and the courageous Sabahans who risked so much to help them.

Remembering alongside families and the local community, this year’s service brought home the deeply human stories behind this history — stories of courage, sacrifice and compassion in the darkest of circumstances, and also ones of reconciliation, peace and hope.

Their stories continue to connect our countries and our people, and remind us why remembrance matters.

Australian Assistant Defence Advisor, Lieutenant Colonel Glenn Sheridan, and Staff Officer Grade One, Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Programme, Lieutenant Colonel Philip Kennedy, recently attended the Mobile Defence Intelligence Research and Analysis Course (MDIRAC) closing ceremony, officiated by Brigadier General Datuk Hj Abdul Razak bin Hj Sipit, Director of Strategic Intelligence, Strategic Intelligence Directorate, Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO).

Delivered by instructors from the Australian Defence School of Intelligence (DFSI), the course equipped 25 Malaysian Armed Forces personnel with the analytical skills, critical-thinking techniques, and decision-making frameworks essential for modern intelligence operations.

MDIRAC highlights the strong and enduring Malaysia-Australia defence partnership, strengthening intelligence capabilities, fostering professional collaboration, and developing defence professionals ready to meet future security challenges.

6th of August 2026 - Commandant of the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College, First Admiral Mohd Shariman bin Ishak, paid a courtesy call on the Australian High Commissioner, Her Excellency Danielle Heinecke, to discuss defence diplomacy, regional security issues and ways to further strengthen cooperation between Australia and Malaysia.

The Commandant also briefed the High Commissioner on the upcoming Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College visit to Australia, highlighting the strong people to people connections and opportunities to deepen our understanding of defence strategy and industry together.

𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

Malaysian Army personnel had the opportunity to work alongside Australian Army aviation personnel from the 1st Aviation Regiment during Exercise Keris Strike 2026 in Kota Belud, Sabah.

This year's exercise marked the first participation of Australian Army Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH), adding a new dimension to the trilateral training involving Malaysia, Australia, and the United States.

Through field training, live-fire serials and professional exchanges, participants enhanced interoperability, shared operational expertise, and strengthened the enduring defence partnership between the three nations.

Last Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Glenn Sheridan and Lieutenant Colonel Philip Kennedy bid farewell to Major (Dr) Izar Shahizad bin Shah Zarin and Sub Lieutenant Muhammad Fadhil bin Hamid RMN as they embark on specialised aviation training programmes.

Australian Defence Force personnel alongside international military and policing representatives from Malaysia, Tonga, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Fiji, and New Zealand participated in the International Military Public Affairs and Photography Course at Simpson Barracks, Victoria.

Malaysia's representative, Corporal Mohammad Fadzil bin Akirul, shared his experiences from the course saying: "I am grateful for the opportunity to enhance my journalism and photography skills through hands-on training at Simpson Barracks. The experience broadened my knowledge and strengthened my professional capabilities."

Congratulations to Corporal Mohammad Fadzil on successfully completing the course. We are proud of your achievement and we look forward to seeing your enhanced skills and experience contribute to future public affairs and media engagements within the Malaysian Armed Forces.
