Links: lnk.bio/fugeeorg Established by Deborah Henry and Shikeen Halibullah in mid 2008 as 'SKEF' (Somalia Kids Education Fund) the co-founders began by providing weekly English and Mathematics tuition to a small group of Somali refugee children. In May 2009, they expanded operations in partnering with a private tuition centre (Save Education Centre) ran by Somali refugee Shafie Mohamed. The centre taught English, Mathematics and Somali to a few individuals within the refugee community with the ability to pay RM80 per month. Under the leadership of the co-founders the centre was soon transformed into an initiative that reached out to over 100 underprivileged students, providing additional subjects from Computing to Art, Theatre and Green Living, as well as extra-curricular activities at no cost. The CERTE (Connecting & Equipping Refugees for Tertiary Education) Bridge Course Malaysia is looking for qualified candidates to participate in our up-coming 2026 Bridge Course!

The CERTE Bridge course is a 6-week program designed to prepare you for higher education by building your skills, knowledge, and confidence. Topics included: study skills, self-care, financial literacy, professional writing, personal branding, and more!

Course Details
- The course runs every SUNDAY from 1 November to 13 December 2026
- Sessions will be held in a hybrid format (a mix of online and in-person sessions).
- Includes one in-person campus visit to a university in Kuala Lumpur (date TBC).
- Full attendance required to receive a certificate
Please note that this is not a degree and is also not English language course.

Application Deadline:
Applications are due by 20 September, 2026.
Selected applicants will be invited for an online interview, and applications outcomes are expected to be announced between 12-16 October, 2026.

At Fugee, we continue to stand in solidarity and reaffirm our mission: ensuring that refugee youth are empowered with the tools to build their own independent, dignified futures through education.

A few weeks ago, we took our Liku-Liku board game for a spin at Black Potion Coffee, and we were so moved by the warm feedback we received! 🎲✨

Players told us the game helped them understand refugee experiences on a deeper level, spark real empathy, and show them concrete ways they can make a difference.

The best part? It proved that interactive games have a unique way of opening minds and inspiring connection faster than standard conversations ever could.

How do we support the ones who hold up the classroom?

Session 3 of our RISE Program was all about centering Teacher Well-being, where we explore how alternative learning centers (ALCs) can move from systemic challenges to meaningful, lasting support for educators.

From navigating heavy workloads in low-resource settings to establishing sustainable support systems, we unpacked how schools can build support through 4 Foundations:
🌱 Care: Do our teachers feel supported as people?
💡 Clarity: Do teachers clearly know what good teaching looks like in our school?
🚀 Improvement: How do we create opportunities for teachers to try new strategies and grow?
🔄 Consistency: What routines can we establish so growth continues even during busy seasons?

When we ground our support in these pillars, we create a ripple effect of care that protects our teachers, transforms our schools, and strengthens our community.

You might be the one we're looking for to join the CERTE 2026 Volunteer Mentor Team and support refugee youth on their journey to higher education!

A mentor will provide guidance and support to help students strengthen their academic skills, develop essential soft skills, and achieve personal growth.

If you're based in Malaysia, fluent in English and able to dedicate a few hours per week from November onwards, join us!

Last week, we welcomed volunteers from University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOWM) and the Leo Club of UOWM, who conducted a vibrant Batik Workshop with our Year 1, 2, and 3 students! 🎨✨

Through their Global Social Responsibility Project, our Fugee School students had the opportunity to explore the rich history and cultural roots of batik while painting their own unique pieces.

More than just a creative activity, the workshop was a chance for our students to connect with Malaysian culture, exchange stories, and build meaningful connections with the community around them. 💛

🎲 A night of games, conversations, and learning with Liku-Liku!

We had a fantastic time at Brew & Board, a game night hosted by Black Potion in Ara Damansara, where we introduced players to Liku-Liku, a game inspired by the twists and turns of refugee life in Malaysia.

Through the game, players experience some of the challenges refugees face as they navigate everyday life, displacement, and uncertainty.
Our goal is to create greater awareness and understanding of refugee issues among Malaysians, while creating a low-barrier and engaging way to talk about topics that can often feel heavy or difficult to discuss.

By learning through play, we hope players walk away with a deeper understanding of refugee experiences and the importance of solidarity, empathy, and standing alongside refugee communities🩵

It was amazing to see so many people engage with Liku-Liku, share their perspectives, and give us valuable feedback. Every conversation is a step towards greater understanding.
A huge thank you to everyone who played and made the night so meaningful! 🎲
