MCCHR BOD Member , Firdaus Husni, recently participated in a panel discussion at the University of Nottingham Malaysia on “Civil Society and Human Rights Strategy and Engagement: Lessons from Malaysia.”

Firdaus talked about her journey transitioning from a practising lawyer to a full time human rights advocate and what keeps her going in the face of shrinking democracy. She talked about strategic litigation and impressed that engaging with policy makers is just as important as activism on the street. One is not better than the other.

Engaging students and civil society is important in strengthening and educating a long-term commitment to human rights and democratic governance exposure.

Over the weekend of 14–15 March 2026, MCCHR, in partnership with The Rights Practice (TRP), gathered law practitioners, academics, and civil society across the region to discuss approaches and challenges in promoting and implementing the KL Guidelines - the Regional Guidelines for Lawyers Representing Individuals Facing the Death Penalty and Ex*****on in Asia.

Over the two days, participants shared their experiences and explored practical ways to apply the KL Guidelines across the region. Thank you to our partners and all participants for your insights! We hope the discussions inspire ongoing collaboration and stronger access to justice for those facing the death penalty.

MCCHR mourns the passing of Malaysian contemporary artist chi too, who died yesterday, 7 March 2026.

Widely recognised in Malaysia’s contemporary art scene, chi too was also an important part of MCCHR’s early journey. During his time with MCCHR, he brought creativity and heart to how we communicated human rights. His presence and work shaped the organisation in its early years and left a lasting impact.

As friends, colleagues, and members of the arts community gather to pay their respects at his wake, we remember his spirit, his creativity, and the joy he brought to those around him.

Rest in peace, chi too.

“chi too was our very first Communications Officer. He was brought in to work on our UndiMsia! awareness-raising campaign with the Orang Asli community and youths in Hulu Langat. With creativity and flair, chi too helped us produce videos and infographics and worked with the Orang Asli community. He also redesigned our LoyarBarang and LoyarBurok websites.

I remember he hosted us in his home in an attempt to bring us under one roof for a parley session. While I do not recall if anything concrete came out of this, there was laughter and fellowship.

chi too will also be remembered for his quirky but sensible advice to staff members leaving MCCHR: ‘drink lots of water’.

My last message to him was many years ago when he was arrested while covering the Orang Asli blockade in Kelantan. He said they released him on bail because he wore them down with a lecture on the law.

We have lost a luminous talent, an activist, and a MCCHR staff member. I am profoundly honoured that he chose to work with MCCHR and grateful for the mark he left on the organisation and on me.”
— Long Seh Lih, Co-Founder & CEO of MCCHR (2015–2018)

“The last time I saw him was last year during an art exhibition. He was the coolest guy I have ever met. He used to wear a sarong blazing through PJ traffic to our then office in Bangsar Utama on a bicycle! May his soul rest in peace"
— Mazni Ibrahim, Chief Human Rights Strategist, MCCHR

“chi too was an incorrigible artist and activist. He believed deeply in the cause and constantly pushed boundaries, using unconventional approaches to communicate human rights to the masses through the arts.

He was funny, warm, and grounded, always reminding us of what we could and could not do.”
— Edmund Bon, Director, MCCHR

"chi too understood authenticity lightyears ahead of anyone I knew. He lived his truth when many of us struggled to find ourselves and thought our worth and value were determined by others. Not him. He knew.

I will always remember him arriving at work drenched in sweat after cycling for miles in the scorching heat, in his batik sarong & slippers no less. He would quickly change into a fresh tee and start work like it was no sweat at all! He was like no other.

chi too will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and integrity."

At least six children were arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) in February 2026!!!

Detaining minors under a national security law sidesteps protections under the Child Act 2001 and violates the principle under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) that the detention of children must be a measure of last resort.

MCCHR stands in solidarity with SUARAM in calling for the immediate release of the children held under SOSMA. Free the children from SOSMA. ✊🏽

On 2 March, we gathered with colleagues and friends for a Buka Puasa potluck at Rumah Mandiri.

Organised together with SIS, Mandiri and SUARAM, the evening was a chance to reconnect and share a meal in good company.

May this Ramadan continue to remind us of the value of community and care for one another.

Strategic Litigation Training Camp on the Death Penalty for Young Lawyers
6–8 February 2026

Over three intensive days, young lawyers explored strategic litigation in the context of the death penalty, covering international human rights standards, developments in Malaysia, defence strategies under the KL Guidelines, and public advocacy, among many others. The camp concluded with a moot court exercise where participants strengthened their arguments and reflected on how the law can be used to challenge injustice.

Thank you to all our trainers for sharing your time and knowledge, and to all participants for your focus and dedication throughout the camp. We hope this experience helps us collectively push forward the movement to abolish the death penalty in Malaysia.
