Bridging Cultures: Mixed Methods, Digital Technologies and the Future of Living Heritage

What happens when humanistic interpretation, computational research and community knowledge come together?

At ICOMOS GA2026, Dr. Tino Mager, Associate Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Groningen and President of ICOMOS Germany, will explore how digital transformation can strengthen heritage research without replacing the interpretive expertise at its heart.

His keynote will examine the possibilities of mixed methods, digital mapping, image analysis, linked data and artificial intelligence, while addressing important questions around bias, representation, uncertainty and accountability.
Rather than seeing technology as a replacement for established expertise, Dr. Mager proposes a more integrated approach: using digital methods to extend what heritage professionals can see, question and connect.

Join us for a conversation about enhancing heritage knowledge, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and shaping the digital systems that will influence how we understand and transmit living heritage.

EP Malaysia and ICOMOS GA2026 are pleased to inform you of our event Sharing Circle : Weaving as a Shared Heritage will be on Saturday, 17 October 2026@1030 am in HAUS KCH, Kuching.

The event envisions an active exchange session in a laidback, open setting.

We encourage the participants to bring a ‘Weaving’ object or image from their personal collection or of their choice to be discussed together. Continuing with the Heritage Map and Then, Now & Future Summary session.

The exchange sessions will be moderated by Afifah & Teh Su Lin of ICOMOS Malaysia.

Heritage Futures: Voices of Old Kuching — Building Resilience Through Living Heritage

As Malaysia prepares to welcome the 22nd ICOMOS General Assembly & Scientific Symposium 2026 (GA2026) in Kuching, conversations about the future of our heritage are already taking shape.

ICOMOS Malaysia was honoured to be invited by Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHe) and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), in partnership with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), to share perspectives on heritage conservation and documentation with distinguished guests, heritage practitioners, local leaders and communities, local government officers and students.

Our appreciation goes to Datu Dr. Sabariah Putit, Advisor for OKSHE, for bringing together this important platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

Old Kuching is more than a historic urban area — it is a living laboratory for the future.

Historic urban areas such as Old Kuching offer important lessons for contemporary challenges relating to sustainability, resilience and social cohesion. Traditional buildings demonstrate climate-responsive approaches to design and construction, while communities continue to practise collective stewardship and transmit knowledge across generations.

At the same time, there is a need to create more opportunities for young people to engage with heritage as active participants, contributing to its documentation, interpretation and safeguarding.

Through Heritage Futures: Voices of Old Kuching, young people will be engaged in documenting and interpreting the living heritage of Old Kuching, while learning from heritage practitioners, engaging with local communities and exploring how heritage can contribute to resilient and low-carbon futures.

The programme was officially launched on 21 September 2026 by YB Dato’ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, marking an important step towards building a lasting GA2026 legacy in Old Kuching.

The launch programme brought together a diverse range of perspectives through heritage expert sharing, community engagement and youth participation.

Two heritage expert sessions highlighted valuable lessons from George Town’s heritage journey, including “George Town’s Journey to UNESCO World Heritage Site” by Mr Lim Hooi Siang, Registered Conservator, and “Heritage Management & Conservation in George Town World Heritage Site” by Ts. Dr Tan Chin Ling, Chairman of the Penang State Cultural Built Heritage Expert Committee – Built Environment.

The programme also featured a Community Engagement Session led by Datin Dr. Nor Hayati binti Hussin and TPr Juwairiyah Ho Abdullah, followed by a Youth Mission Engagement Session, providing opportunities to explore how communities and younger generations can actively participate in documenting, interpreting and safeguarding living heritage.
