We are pleased to share a newly released book that many people living with Parkinson’s may find helpful.

Living Parkinson’s: 7 Strategies for Living a Full Life with Renewed Purpose by Steve Yellen

Written by someone living with Parkinson’s, this thoughtful and practical guide focuses on how individuals can take charge of their journey and continue to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Unlike many books that focus mainly on the medical aspects of Parkinson’s, Living Parkinson’s explores how people can face the future with positivity and purpose.

The book highlights seven key strategies for living well with Parkinson’s:

• Attitude
• Knowledge
• Support
• Exercise
• Wellness
• Advocacy
• Research

As noted by Emma Collin, CEO of Fight Parkinson’s (Australia):

“Whether you’re newly diagnosed or years into the journey, you walk away with a foundation to develop your own plan and a stronger sense of what living well can look like. It’s honest, hopeful, and grounded in real experience.”

The book also includes expert insights, personal stories from people living with Parkinson’s and practical ideas that readers can adapt to build their own plan for living well.

We are always encouraged to see resources that empower people with Parkinson’s to live actively, positively and purposefully

28th February 2026 - University Malaya/MPDA Art Project.

Today marked the first session of the UM/MPDA Art Project, a collaboration aimed at providing art-based activities as a meaningful tool for self-expression among our participants.

Creative processes such as art engagement are known to help reduce tremors and freezing episodes, improve eye-hand coordination, enhance mood, and build self-confidence. More importantly, it offers a joyful and relaxing space where everyone can express themselves freely without pressure.

The first session, “Puddle Pour Scribble,” was facilitated by Dr. Hazlin Anita Zainal Abidin, with assistance from Dr. Yeo Siang Lee.

In this activity, participants poured colours freely onto paper and allowed the paint to flow naturally, creating organic shapes and patterns. These “puddles” then became the starting point for intuitive scribbling and creative interpretation. There was no right or wrong outcome, only exploration, movement, and personal expression. The process encourages spontaneous hand movements, visual focus, and creativity, making it both therapeutic and enjoyable.

Our members enjoyed the session tremendously. Many surprised themselves with their creativity and produced truly beautiful and unique pieces of artwork. The room was filled with laughter, concentration, and a wonderful sense of achievement.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to our facilitators for guiding such a meaningful and uplifting session. We look forward to the next art journey together!

Celebrating Our Members – Advocacy in Action (January 2026 Highlights)

We would like to share two meaningful January events where our members stepped forward, not despite Parkinson’s, but with it and continuing to advocate, inspire, and make their voices heard.

1. Ng Yoke Yin

Ng Yoke Yin represented our community at the Selangor Turf Club, where she received a donation cheque on behalf of MPDA, presented by the Sultan of Selangor. Her presence was a testimony that people with Parkinson’s remain active, visible, and valued contributors to society.

2. Wong Kok Thong

Wong Kok Thong attended a session titled “Community Impact of Neurodegenerative Diseases” at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, where he shared his Parkinson’s journey with medical students. By speaking from lived experience, he helped future doctors better understand Parkinson’s beyond textbooks, that is, through empathy, humanity, and real life.

We would also like to express our appreciation to Mrs Wong, for sharing her important role as a supportive spouse and caregiver, offering valuable insight into the caregiving journey alongside Parkinson’s.

Many thanks as well to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Kit Mun, Consultant Geriatrician and Senior Lecturer, for facilitating this meaningful and impactful session.

Both Yoke Yin and Kok Thong live with Parkinson’s, yet continue to step up, speak out, and advocate in their own meaningful ways. Their courage reminds us that Parkinson’s may change how we live but it does not diminish our purpose, voice, or ability to contribute.

We are proud of you both. Thank you for representing our community with strength, grace, and determination ❤️

Art and Craft Event | 6 January 2026

The Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association (MPDA) collaborated with the International Medical University (IMU) to conduct an Art and Craft event on 6 January 2026. The session was facilitated by nine pharmacy students from IMU, whose guidance and support contributed significantly to the smooth conduct of the programme.

The activity was structured into four segments, namely calligraphy, straw art, and red packet (ang pow) decoration. These activities were designed to encourage creativity, enhance fine motor skills, and provide participants with a meaningful and enjoyable experience.

The outcomes of the session were highly commendable. Participants produced impressive artworks and calligraphy pieces, many of which are well suited for use during the forthcoming Chinese New Year celebrations in February. The event not only resulted in tangible creative outputs but also fostered social interaction, engagement, and a sense of achievement among the participants.

MPDA extends its sincere appreciation to the IMU pharmacy students for their commitment, enthusiasm, and valuable contribution to the success of this collaborative programme.

🌷 MPDA 31st Anniversary Luncheon – 30th November 2025🌷
Celebrating 31 Years of Hope, Resilience & Community

When MPDA began on 12th September 1994, it started as a small circle of families searching for support, knowledge, and understanding. There was no roadmap, no blueprint: just a shared determination to ensure that people with Parkinson’s would not walk this journey alone and that people with Parkinson’s deserve dignity, understanding, and community.

From that humble beginning, we have grown into the largest and oldest Parkinson’s support group in Malaysia. This did not happen overnight. It happened because of people, people with big hearts, people willing to give their time, people who believe that hope can be created.

On 30th November 2025, our 31st Anniversary Luncheon at the Royal Selangor Club was a moment to pause, reflect, and honour this journey. Graced by YB Teresa Kok, Member of Parliament for Seputeh, the gathering brought together members, caregivers, volunteers, and friends who have been part of MPDA’s story through the years.

The afternoon programme reflected the spirit of MPDA which is heartfelt, purposeful, and people-centred. From sharing our journey and milestones over the years, to recognising the dedication of volunteers, caregivers, and supporters, every segment celebrated the collective effort that has sustained MPDA through challenges and growth. The warm fellowship over lunch, conversations at every table, and the shared laughter created an atmosphere of belonging that truly defines our community.

As we look back on 31 years of perseverance, compassion, and resilience, we are reminded that MPDA is more than an association It is a family. We extend our sincere gratitude to all who made this celebration possible and to everyone who continues to walk this journey with us.

Here’s to 31 years of serving with heart and to many more years of hope ahead .
