It’s not everyday you get to walk around Bukit Bintang with a local. Over the CNY period we walked with Allen who balik kampung and did so much research digging through old maps and images to take us on such a meaningful walk 💛

Our city evolves so quickly, we really need to hang on to stories and sharings like these to imagine what things were like, how things could be in the future. So many things we would have missed if we didn’t slow down and observe them. Thank you Allen for this trip down memory lane, of your memories and of our nation 🇲🇾

We’d love to walk in your neighbourhood next, hit us up if you have a story to share ✨

The best way to understand a city? Walk it.

When city leaders walk like everyone else, they get to see, feel, and experience what really matters — safety, comfort, and accessibility.

We had such a good time walking with city councils from Miri and Johor (Iskandar Puteri), plus other agencies, spotting everyday issues and ideas to make our cities more people-friendly. 🚶‍♀️💬

Walking connects us — it helps us observe, listen, and design better solutions together.

Huge thanks to UN-Habitat Multi-Country Programme Office (MCO), Bangkok for having Kerja Jalan at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy (ASUS) Project Phase II’s Urban Planning for City Leaders Training (UPCT) and Multi-Stakeholders Capacity Building Program (MSCB).

Here’s to more leaders who walk before they talk — and build cities that truly work for people. ✨

When Reimagine Sentul called us in to co-create a Safer Streets for Sentul event we immediately said YES.

We’ve always loved walking in Sentul, it has so much to offer, and clearly their community feels strongly about this too. This part of Sentul has also maintained, to some extent at least, a neighbourhood walkability scale.

🔍This is what we were asked to collectively assess through a walkability auditing exercise. Just how safe and comfortable is walking in Sentul for different age groups and gender, what are the obstacles that limits the walking experience, and how can we come together as a community and demand for better streets.

It also helps that walking in Sentul is so interesting! The mix of old and new, multiple transit lines, places of worship and of course its rich urban fauna 🐮

Safer Streets for Sentul, was the second of three events as part of a community-led series held on September 20th 2025. Keep an eye out for upcoming activities 🥰

Every signal, every sidewalk, every shade tree tells children if they belong.

📌 “(The city) tak berapa bersih sangat.”
📌 “(Pedestrian) traffic light needs to be longer, sekejap sangat untuk kami melintas.”
📌 “Cars are very fast.”
📌 “We need more trees.”
📌 “I love taking the trains — it’s like a roller coaster!”

These were some of the honest voices from Ronda-Ronda Kotaraya — where children walked from KLCC, hopped on trains and buses, and ended at the Prasarana Mobility Hub.
The highlight? Meeting the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and sharing their reflections directly with her on how the city could be safer, greener, and more inclusive. 🌍✨

What they reminded us:
🚧 Safe streets = freedom for children, seniors & all abilities
🧭 Wayfinding = no one left behind
🌳 Small changes = longer lights, slower cars, more shade
👧 Children = city-makers too

Kerja Jalan was honoured to lead this walk with our partners during the ASEAN Sustainable Urban Forum 2025 and thank you for all your support - , , & .

Wishing all moms and those who mother a happy Mother’s Day!

This year, we marked KL with our first-ever stroller walk — seeing the city through the eyes (and wheels!) of parents and babies.

What did we find?
↕️ Missing curb cuts
🚧 Cracked sidewalks
🚗 Cars and rubbish blocking footpaths
❗ Narrow, uneven crossings — with cars ignoring right of way!

These obstacles turn simple journeys into daily stress — excluding mothers and caregivers from navigating public spaces with children.

👟 Safe, stroller-friendly streets are not a luxury.
They’re a necessity — for parents, for the elderly, for people with disabilities, and for anyone trying to move through the city with care and dignity.

Could Malaysian streets become more stroller-friendly? We believe they can — with collective will, thoughtful design, and stronger advocacy. Because streets should support caregivers, not stress them out.

A big thank you to the families and advocates who walked with us, shared their stories, and made space for this conversation 🤍🧡🤍

Let’s keep pushing (literally!) for smoother, safer streets.

[Limited Slots]
We are trying something new this year for Jane’s Walk Festival - a very first stroller “friendly” walk designed for parents of infants who want to walk outside with their babies.

Part mental health walk part advocacy 🐣 we hope to uncover what exactly parents/carers need to feel comfortable and safe. We will walk for 40 minutes on a relatively accessible route (some lifting will be required) followed by a discussion in a cafe.

Sign up now if you’re keen to walk with us with an infant under the age of 2 ✌🏽Keeping the group small as we are testing new grounds. Link in bio ☺️

How healthy are our cities (?)🌱🚶🏽‍♂️🥗🛣️

For us, the health of our cities is reflected in its urban citizens. And the figures of our health lately has made record news, over half Malaysians are obese and 1 in 6 suffer from diabetes.

Aside from diet we have to look into our surroundings and how we move as significant contributing factors to these figures.

How easy is it for us to walk, move actively, to access basic amenities? 🙋🏽‍♂️ Based on our walking experiences and engagements, you have to be quite “lucky” to find yourself in a walkable neighbourhood - and even then it is rarely truly accessible.

This outcome of our urban landscape is the result of design. Choices we’ve made to prioritise mobility and thus automobile dependence leading to sprawling cities and highway proliferation.

What we need instead, is Proximity and Access 🙌🏽 retrofitting our cities and streets to be more walkable and rollable, so we can access things we need through a short walk or bus ride. We highlighted doing this through a 15 minute city vision with places like in mind and by rethinking parking minimums (especially near transit) and destinations accessibility.

As Jane Jacobs would say, our cities are dynamic organisms, constantly evolving 🍄It’s never too late to shift towards an urban revolution that puts proximity, humanisation and access as its key focus.

Whats your take, how healthy would you say our cities are? 🤒

Thank you for inviting Kerja Jalan to be part of the Healthy cities forum panel on World Planning Day 🙏🏼💚

We had an amazing time at Malaysia Urban Forum 2024, learning and connecting with fellow city makers. Big thanks to for having us! ✨

1. Children Assembly Walkabout – Safe, car-free streets become spaces where children can explore, learn, and play! We joined forces with .my , who led a street redesign workshop, and , who hosted a storytelling session. 🕵🏻‍♀️⚽️🧑🏽‍🎨🪁

2. Partnership as the Key Success Towards Sustainable Cities forum by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad – Prioritizing walkability and reducing reliance on cars contributes to sustainable transport. Walking and public transport should be embraced by all economic groups, not just seen as a necessity for the less fortunate. True sustainability is achieved when public spaces are shared among all road users. We shared the stage with RapidBus Malaysia, , and . 🚎👨🏻‍🦽👩🏻‍🦯‍➡️🚌🚶🏻‍➡️🚲

3. Creating Safer & People-friendly Streets at 30km/h School Zones forum by .my - Reducing speed limits in school zones to 30 km/h can significantly lower the risk of accidents, especially for children, pedestrians, and cyclists. Shockingly, 67 deaths occur in school zones annually in Malaysia. We moderated a panel discussion with Bike Commute Malaysia, .streets , and on the importance of safer, people-friendly streets. 3️⃣0️⃣🚸
