HOW I DISCOVERED THE REACH TO RECOVERY AND WHY I WANT YOU TO PLUG INTO THIS OPPORTUNITY TOO

‎I discovered Reach to Recovery International (RRI) in 2019. Though my cancer journey began long before then (2014), my journey had already reshaped my life. I did walk a serious road. What stands out is not just what happened to me but how I refused to stay a victim of the system or of cancer itself.

‎After several failed attempts to access treatment abroad due to limited resources and equipment in Nigeria at the time, By January 2016, I eventually succumbed to receiving care at LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos.

‎That experience changed me. Beyond my personal battle, I witnessed the harsh reality of cancer care in Nigeria at the time, late diagnoses, inadequate equipment and manpower, limited access to treatment, and far too many preventable deaths.

‎I survived. Many did not...

‎By the end of that year, I could no longer ignore what I had seen. The gaps in our health system were glaring, as one who has a media background, I felt a responsibility to act, to sensitize the government, to alert Nigeria, to raise the wake-up call. That conviction led me to begin advocacy and awareness work, which i began using the media Television, Radio, Newspapers and the social media and then the formation of the Atinuke Cancer Foundation to support other patients navigating the same painful path.

‎But even as the foundation grew, I felt restless, unfulfilled. Advocacy was not enough. Even with the foundation's work, I wanted more for patients, better treatment protocols, improved access to care, modern equipment, and higher standards of professionalism. I wanted to understand global best practices and bring that knowledge home to Nigeria.

‎Determined, I began exploring opportunities abroad. I found a cancer awareness walk in Scotland and started researching about it, immediately I began processing plans to attend, ‎despite having no financial means to support the trip. I was driven by vision, not resources.

‎Then came a moment I can only describe as divine alignment.

‎Out of the blue, an oncologist who had treated me in 2016 at LUTH (Dr. Adewunmi Alabi) sent me a message that had

Today, we stand united as one voice in the fight against cancer.

Every journey is unique, yet our purpose is shared, to reduce the cancer burden through prevention, early detection, advocacy, and compassionate care.

On this World Cancer Day, we remind every resident of our great city, Lagos state that cancer does not define us, and it does not discriminate, but together, we can change its story.

The theme “United by Unique” speaks to our shared humanity. Each person’s cancer journey is different, yet our collective strength lies in early detection, accurate information, compassion, and timely access to care.

We urge you to:
*Know your body and go for regular screenings
* Seek medical help early, cancer detected early can be treated
* Support survivors and families with empathy, not stigma, Cancer respects of no-one.
* Join hands with advocates, health workers, and policymakers to demand better cancer care for all.

Lagos is strong, Lagos is resilient. When we stand united, cancer loses its power.

Together, let us choose awareness over fear, action over silence, and hope over despair.
One World, One Lagos, One Message.

United Against Cancer.

I ACCEPT THE CALL,
HONORED TO SERVE AS 'RRI' REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR NIGERIA

I am humbled, grateful, and deeply honored to announce my acceptance of the appointment as Regional Representative for Reach to Recovery International (RRI) for Nigeria.

I encountered the RRI conference in 2019 in Prague, Czech Republic. That experience for me, was not just a conference, it was home. I met people who truly understood where the shoe pinches. People with lived experiences, from different nations, speaking different languages, yet saying the same thing with their lives, since then we have been like family.

My path as a breast cancer survivor, advocate, and founder of the Atinuke Cancer Foundation has taught me that true support is spiritual, emotional, and medical. It is community. It is love.
"I may have had cancer, but cancer does not have me."
For me, this appointment is deeply personal.
It is more than a position—it is a calling, a testimony, and a continuation of purpose.
This feels like divine alignment. It is the unfolding of a journey God started in me 11 years ago.

This year January, began with my appointment as Chairman of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Lagos State Chapter. And now, December 2025 has opened with this profound global assignment as Regional Representative of Reach to Recovery International.

I am ready.
Ready to serve.
Ready to build deeper, richer, more spiritual and people-centered advocacy.
Ready to strengthen breast cancer support across Nigeria through the RRI mission.

Reach to Recovery International Inc. is a global movement of love, strength, and peer support, a community that restores hope to people affected by breast cancer. RRI uplifts survivors, strengthens peer-support programs, shares best practices across nations, and empowers advocates through conferences, webinars, and resources.
Founded in 1953 in the United States of America by Terese Lasser, a woman who believed survivors should never walk alone, RRI has grown into a worldwide sisterhood. In 1974, Francine Timothy and the American Cancer Society expanded this mission into Europe, opening doors of hospitals and hearts across continents. Today, RRI stands as a global for

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR*

‎With profound respect and sadness, we at the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), Lagos State Chapter, join the rest of the nation in mourning the passing of His Excellency, Former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at the age of 82.

‎President Buhari's tenure marked a significant turning point in the fight against cancer in Nigeria.
He signed into law the National Institute For Cancer Research And Treatment (Establishment) Act of 2017, the funding of the Cancer Health Fund (CHF), and the designation of six Federal Tertiary Health Institutions as Oncology Centres of Excellence.

His visionary leadership and commitment further extended to the establishment and inauguration of the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre in 2019—a world-class facility providing hope and advanced treatment options to thousands.
In 2019, President Buhari personally condoled with the family of the late Prof. Taudeen Aderemi Ajekigbe, a renowned oncologist and cancer advocate, whose work greatly influenced the evolution of cancer care in Nigeria.

‎These landmark contributions will continue to transform cancer care delivery and outcomes for generations to come.

‎On behalf of the Founder/CEO if Atinuke Cancer Foundation and the Chairman, Nigerian Cancer Society, Lagos State, Princess Tinu Lawal, and all our esteemed members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved family, to the Government and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinunbu, to the good people of Daura, all friends, colleagues, and fellow citizens who feel this great loss.

‎May Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest and reward his service to humanity.

A SALUTE TO PROGRESS, HOPE AND LEADERSHIP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

As a cancer survivor/advocate, privileged to experience the full spectrum, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the journey toward better cancer treatment in Nigeria.

Yesterday, I had the distinct honor of delivering the Charge to Launch the newly published book by First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC NIGERIA) at their event which took place at Radisson Blu commemorating Cancer Survivors Month, the unveiling of their publication, and the official handover to new leadership.

I began by taking the audience back to a time in Nigeria when the odds were stacked unbearably high against cancer patients, a time I personally lived through. It was during the Ebola outbreak, a period of great uncertainty for our nation.

Nigeria had only one functioning linear accelerator ( ) machine serving all 36 states. , a critical drug for HER2-positive patients, cost ₦1 million per dose & 18 doses would be used by the patient. Chemotherapy chairs were unavailable, radiotherapy sessions had to be booked months in advance, and the number of patients far outweighed the capacity of available doctors.

It was a time when some patients, upon receiving diagnosis would return home to die in silence—defeated by the disease, cost & lack of access to care. A time when cancer was deeply stigmatized, believed to be a spiritual attack, voodoo, or a punishment for one’s misdeeds. Husbands abandoned wives because of the stigma, myth and superstition that surrounded cancer.

As I spoke, i was close to tears myself, holding back the lump that was beginning in my throat, I could see the impact of the knowledge (fear and somberness) those memories reflected in the eyes and faces of the guests and audience, the weight of the past still lingers...

I did not fully grasp how deeply the story resonated until I returned to my seat and noticed one of the ladies on my table sobbing uncontrollably. It took fifteen minutes to console her. That moment reminded me again of the importance of the work we do.

So today, I pause to say "Thank you". Thank you to everyone/stakeholders who have worked and continues to work—tirel

Yesterday marked a historic milestone in our nation’s fight against cervical cancer.

As Chairman of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Lagos Chapter, I am proud to share that Nigeria officially launched the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (PECCiN) a bold, united initiative bringing together national and global stakeholders to end cervical cancer in our lifetime.

This landmark event was led by the First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency . Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and featured strong representation from leaders in global and national health:

Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization ( )

Dr. Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare

Dr. Muyi Aina, CEO, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA)

Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, Vice Chair of the National Task Force for Cervical Cancer Elimination and Chair of the Organising Committee

The event was moving and purpose-driven from a powerful short documentary by Dr. Aisha Mustapha and Annabelle Ayangbade, to the symbolic HPV vaccination of young schoolgirls a poignant reminder of why this work is urgent.

Governors, ministers, and partners delivered goodwill messages, reaffirming support for HPV vaccine rollout, improved screening, and access to care. Organizations like Gavi and Unitaid were rightly acknowledged for their lifesaving contributions in LMICs.

The Nigerian Cancer Society was well represented, led by National President, Professor ABIDEMI OMONISI .

With , Nigeria is saying: cervical cancer is preventable, treatable, and ultimately eliminable.

As Chair of NCS Lagos, I urge all stakeholders civil society groups, medical professionals, educators, and advocates to align with this roadmap. Let us scale up education, vaccination, screening, and access. We stand united in our commitment to drive action, raise awareness, and support the nationwide implementation of cervical cancer elimination strategies.

Together, we can and must eliminate cervical cancer in Nigeria. 💪🏾
