Reef Check Malaysia An organisation committed to healthy oceans. There are some 3,600 km2 of reef around the country, including fringing reefs and offshore islands.

We create impact by partnering with local communities, government agencies and the private sector to protect and conserve marine ecosystems. Malaysia is part of the “Coral Triangle”, the area of the world’s oceans recognized by scientists as having the highest biodiversity. Coral reefs therefore represent an economically important ecosystem and are the foundation of a significant percentage of the

country’s tourist industry. Over 350 species of hard coral have been identified in Malaysian waters. However, a lack of comprehensive management programmes is leading to degradation of this important economic resource. This situation is exacerbated by inadequate information on the status and location of the reefs, further hindering management efforts. In 2001, Reef Check Foundation appointed a National Coordinator for Malaysia, to promote Reef Check and carry out training and surveys. While there were some successes, lack of funding and support prevented the coordinator from having a major impact on marine conservation in Malaysia. In 2006, the British Government provided funding for a one year project to establish a more sustainable Reef Check programme in Malaysia. That project culminated with the registration of Reef Check Malaysia Bhd as a non-profit company in August 2007.

Using real seagrass specimens, the students SK Kampung Baru Pasir Gogok explored seagrass morphology while learning to recognise species found in their local area. The students showed their understanding by drawing, labelling and identifying the species they had observed.

Hands-on learning continued at the school’s tank nursery, where students monitored the cultured Enhalus acoroides seedlings by measuring leaf length as an indicator of growth and recording their observations. They also carried out water quality measurements to assess the conditions supporting healthy seagrass growth.

It’s now time the Community Marine Conservation Groups (CMCGs) in Semporna learn more in-depth technical skills to build independence and sustainable community-based organisations.

We curated and delivered four training modules tailored to our community members in Semporna on leadership, conflict resolution, effective communication, and basic organisational management. These skills are crucial to ensure the CMCGs grow sustainably and efficiently.

The Mantanani Marine Conservation Group continued their training and this time on coral bleaching, ghost nets removal, and coral planting.

The training consisted of a classroom session and followed by practical coral bleaching monitoring activities the next day.

During the training, two permanent monitoring sites were established and marked at Police Gate and Sahara.

Congratulations to the team and we’re delighted the team is now equipped to face future bleaching events.

This year, we are introducing additional programmes at SMK Adela!

A Marine Ecosystem Awareness session was conducted for 36 Form 1 students, introducing them to the marine ecosystems through an engaging mix of learning and interactive activities.

The students get to play “The Ocean Heroes” game. They had to work together to answer questions, discuss marine-related scenarios, and apply what they had learned throughout the session.

The energy and teamwork shown by the students throughout the activities made the session both enjoyable and rewarding, with plenty of enthusiasm displayed from start to finish.

Special thanks to the teachers of SMK Adela and the volunteers from Pengerang Independent Terminals Sdn. Bhd. (PITSB) for their support in coordinating the session.

Persol PBS, our Bronze ICC sponsor, collected a whopping 402 cigarette butts during their beach cleanup at Pantai Kelanang.

The team worked together to clear 103 kg of trash from the beach. The other two most commonly found items were plastic or foam pieces (252 pieces) and plastic beverage bottles (210 pieces).

This was their second beach cleanup at Pantai Kelanang. This time, the team observed many plastic fragments in the mangrove areas, highlighting the important role our mangrove ecosystems play in trapping and filtering marine debris.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆𝘀!

Recently, Reef Check Malaysia, together with Tengah Island Conservation and , conducted our annual Reef Check monitoring around the Besar Archipelago.

In addition to the surveys, we also removed a ghost net entangled on the coral reef following a report from a local snorkelling boat operator. This action highlights the important role that local communities and tourism operators play in protecting our marine ecosystems.

Although this year’s annual monitoring has been completed, our conservation work continues. Thank you to the MMCG team and the Pejabat Perikanan Negeri Johor for their continued support of our conservation efforts across the Mersing islands each year.

Continuing RCM commitment to marine awareness in South Johor, this year's CEPA programme welcomed a new group of Form 4 students from SMK Tanjung Datuk (SMKTD).

The session introduced students to three key marine ecosystems, namely coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass meadows, highlighting their ecological roles, the threats they face, and why conserving them is essential. The students showed strong interest throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions and actively participating in discussions on the importance of protecting Malaysia's marine ecosystems.

Thank you to the teachers of SMK Tanjung Datuk for their continuous support, and to the Pengerang Independent Terminals Sdn. Bhd. (PITSB) volunteers who joined the programme and contributed to making the session a success.

Happy International Youth Day!

Our team member from Cintai Redang, Muhaimin Hou, is one of the youths featured in SCS SAP Project and Fisheries Refugia Initiative's youth day shout-out.

We’re grateful to be one of the recipients of SEA Grant, which supports our work to build the capacity of island communities to monitor marine biodiversity and co-manage their marine ecosystems.

We are honoured to be part of Malaysia's first tropical eucheumatoid seaweed restoration project, led by Universiti Malaya (UM). The initiative is part of the international Seaweed-PROTECT project.

The project involves several local partners, including RCM, Sabah Parks and the Selakan Marine Conservation Group (SMCG). SMCG is actively involved in the restoration efforts, ensuring that local knowledge is incorporated into the process.

Once the project concluded in Selakan, the seaweed seedlings were transferred to the Larapan community to initiate sustainable seaweed farming. The seaweed will now be monitored and maintained by the Larapan Marine Conservation Group (LMCG). SMCG, who was trained by UM, has since transferred its knowledge by training the local community in Larapan.

Science moves furthest when communities lead the way. This is what it looks like when local people aren't just included, but truly empowered, science becomes something that works for them, not just about them.
