🌕Mid-Autumn Festival|“Song Qiu” — A Putian Tradition of Filial Love
When we think of the Mid-Autumn Festival, we often think of mooncakes, moon-gazing and family reunions.
For the Putian and Xinghua communities, however, the period from the 1st to the 15th day of the eighth lunar month is also marked by a unique tradition passed down through generations — “Song Qiu” (送秋).
In the past, some coastal areas of Putian were deeply influenced by the traditional preference for sons over daughters.
According to tradition, during the Song Dynasty, a local official sought to change this mindset by encouraging married daughters to return to their parents’ homes during the Mid-Autumn period and prepare gifts to honour and care for their parents. These gifts included not only festive foods, but also clothing.
As autumn brought cooler weather and winter approached, daughters would prepare everything their parents needed for the colder months, from shoes and socks to clothes and hats. This was a heartfelt expression of care, while also demonstrating that daughters could be equally filial and capable of caring for their parents.
Over time, “Song Qiu” became a distinctive Mid-Autumn tradition of Putian. Even today, families may bring mooncakes, taro, chestnuts, Xinghua rice vermicelli, pork trotters, as well as clothing and other gifts back to their parents’ homes as a gesture of filial love and gratitude.
