Kongsi Co-op

Kongsi Co-op We are a community-owned enterprise in Malaysia that focuses on connecting people, soil, and nature. (SKM Reg. No.: 202259501974)

Kongsi Co-op started humbly with a group of concerned consumers who wanted more organic and biodynamic products and services to fill the current market gap. Kongsi Co-op has since been looking for the optimal operating model to fulfil their everyday needs. Kongsi Co-op hopes to reach out to more producers and consumers who share the same values and favour supporting the local circular economy. Kon

gsi Co-op is concerned with relationships and community building as much as with factors of production, consumption, labour, and finance. Relationships here include not only our relations to fellow human beings but also to mother earth nature. We believed in this production side of an economic life that is imbued with social responsibility. By collating eco-friendly and safe products or services and operating in a co-purchase mode, the profits generated will be utilised for both member and community development, thereby achieving a co-winning circular economy. Established in 2022, Kongsi Co-op has been striving to build a harmonious three-folding society through its vision, missions, values, and principles. The 7 foundations for sustainable living we aim to support and co-create:
1. Support sustainable farming practices such as organic and biodynamic farming
2. Choose products and services that are friendly to people and the environment
3. Practice green consumption model and minimal waste of resources
4. Conduct businesses without exploiting people or nature
5. Support local small-scale farmers and artisans
6. Provide diverse and holistic education in human development
7. Build a sustainable community through associative economics

As part of our efforts to inspire a lifelong sustainable lifestyle as community, we have an important arm of education body -- Kongsi Academy -- that carries out workshops and trainings related to essential skills that helps to unfold one's unique potential. We welcome you to join us on this journey to create the community that belongs to everyone. Alternatively, you may receive our latest updates by subscribing to our Kongsi Co-op Channel on WhatsApp (https://chat.whatsapp.com/CHEw0fpSwZE5VPT0wmOoOl).

📣Updates on Art for the Land, Voices for the Soil📣

We are deeply moved by the amount of support and attention received throughout the 4 exhibition days! A whooping RM120,763.85 of total sales were made through the artists’ work and generous amount of RM75,379.99 was directly contributed to Fund a Land with Kongsi in racing against time to secure a 30+ year old organic farmland! Without the amazing artists and crafters that saw the need to contribute, we would not have been able to be come one meaningful milestone closer in reaching our goal. Thank you to all artists .potters , with heartwarming special thanks to for initiating this eye- and heart-opening experience of the power of art in connecting people, soil and nature. And also big thank you to those whom contributed for the Future of Food exhibit namely .taischoice, , , Dr Azman and .coop! (More in the next posts)

The opening ceremony would not have been successful without the community effort of emcee .illysia , performer , Chinese ink painting master (the Sparrow whisperer) Mr Yap Hong Ngee, and the amazing zero waste F&B team , , Doodle Dough and the whole working team made up of Kongsi co-owners and volunteers as well as our venue support .my! It was made even more special with the gracing of YB Teresa Kok as she is big supporter of community initiatives and cooperatives like ours and encouraged guests to join Kongsi Co-op and support the Fund a Land movement.

May Lai is a designer, self-taught illustrator, and curator of unknown, a platform dedicated to preloved selections.

Her practice begins as a quiet act of release—translating complex inner thoughts into spontaneous drawings. For her, drawing is both instinctive and restorative, a form of self-healing that unfolds in response to each passing moment.

Working intuitively, her lines are guided less by intention than by feeling, allowing each piece to emerge as a trace of presence rather than a fixed idea.

After 9 years of practising in Taiwan, they established their studio in Dungun along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, grounding their practice in local clay and raw materials. Their works balance utility and beauty—vessels made for daily use, yet imbued with the memory of the land. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship, their creations are shaped by contemporary thought, revealing both quiet functionality and the untold potential of local materials.

carries the imprint of its past as an iron mining town. Its history lingers in the soil, in the waves, and in the hands of those who call it home. This series of vases is their tribute to that place.

Created using the Japanese technique, different shades of are layered and stacked like geological strata. When thrown on the wheel and carefully carved, these hidden layers surface into intricate patterns. Each carved surface resembles a frame of animation, capturing movement forever stilled in clay.

The sculptural in earthy brown are crafted from porcelain blended with iron oxide, yielding a rich tone that pays homage to the iron that once defined Dungun’s industry and identity. Its textures and tones feel like traces shaped by sea wind—quiet, layered, and marked by time.

The blue vessels are made from porcelain infused with cobalt oxide, evoking the deep blues of Terengganu’s sea, waters that have shaped the town’s horizon for centuries. Their surfaces mirror the delicate traces of shells scattered along the sand.

Each vessel stands as a fragment of Dungun’s story—formed by time, refined by craftsmanship, and sustained by the enduring spirit of the place they call home.
