KlimbKinabalu

KlimbKinabalu Fight Against Cancer Klimb Kinabalu is an annual fundraising climb organised by MAKNA (National Cancer Council Malaysia).

Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095 metres, is the highest mountain in Sabah. People battling CANCER want only ONE thing – to WIN the Battle. At MAKNA, we are committed to providing access to necessary treatment and services to financially-challenged cancer patients. Together with ordinary Malaysians from all walks of life, MAKNA hopes to inspire extraordinary change and give people affected by cancer renewe

d hope in life. Annually a group of 20 to 25 volunteers braves Mount Kinabalu. These volunteers make personal statements in the fight against cancer with their participation and they set personal targets to reach the top of Mount Kinabalu in honour of their loved ones who have battled cancer. Some use this opportunity to show their support for cancer patients as well as survivors. Mountain climbing is symbolic – it reflects the struggle that a cancer patient endures during treatment and how he or she may still defy the odds and beat cancer triumphantly. In this spirit, climbing Mount Kinabalu becomes an even more meaningful undertaking and one of the best experiences a person could have. Klimb Kinabalu aims to raise the level of cancer awareness and generate sufficient funds to help financially-challenged cancer patients and their families. Funds raised from this initiative will provide uninterrupted supply of financial assistance, nutritional support, prostheses, medical appliances, and prescribed drugs to cancer patients. A portion of the funds will also go towards providing scholarships for young cancer survivors to continue their tertiary education.

“Feel the Joy of Giving, therein lies Hope.”

"I'm Sunny Lim and I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2016. I was treated and in remission for about six years.

In 2022, I discovered that my cancer had relapsed and metastasized. I am now a Cancer survivor as well as a patient. I joined MAKNA as a volunteer to assist others in any way I can. MAKNA is a very good platform to reach out to others enduring similar situations.

Ever since I heard that MAKNA was organizing trips to climb Mount Kinabalu, I was very keen to join. I missed signing up for the previous trip but thought I would go the following year, but the Covid pandemic hit us and things were put on hold.

Then in early 2023, I was invited to go with my wife. I couldn’t believe it. My patience finally paid off. It would mean a lot to me as I intend to use this experience in my sharing sessions to motivate and inspire other cancer patients and show them what is possible when we put our hearts and minds to it, and to beat this battle with cancer with determination.

At the time of the trip, I was still going through chemotherapy and I held back the treatment in order to be able to go. I had no idea that it would be so arduous for me and I faltered all the way up there and back.

Thanks to all the help and support that I had from the group, I managed to complete the task and am now able to share it with others.

My gratitude goes to the organizers, staff, guides, and everyone involved in this trip to have made it such a flawless and memorable one." - Mr Sunny Lim, MAKNA’s Volunteer

Brain Cancer isn’t a one-size-fits-all disease.

We can all get these issues occasionally but it’s time to get it checked if you are getting a combination of ‘em regularly. Share this post to spread awareness!
