In this illustrious week from the 21st - 23rd of April 2026, MNS together with IUCN Asia organised the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) Inception Workshop for the Mangrove Forest Landscape Restoration in the North-central Selangor Coast (NCSC) project.

This vital Workshop collated local knowledge and wisdom, pairing it with science-based tools to map stakeholders, identify drivers of mangrove degradation, prioritise Forest Landscape Restoration interventions, discuss sources of additional funding for long-term conservation of mangroves in the NCSC, which overall contributes to the long-term planning for mangrove restoration in the NCSC. We would like to humbly thank each of our honoured participants; comprising of various local stakeholders, including the Federal Government agencies (NRES, JPSM, and PERHILITAN), Selangor State Government Agencies (Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated, Selangor Forestry Department and LUAS), District Municipal Councils and Agencies of Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, and Klang, as well as representatives from local communities and fisherfolk associations, universities, NGOs, and the private sectors.

This ROAM workshop brought about renewing collective knowledge and understanding that enable us; MNS and IUCN to plan for greater ecological mangrove restoration in the NCSC over the coming months.

MNS together with IUCN as the co-organisers of the Workshop express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to everyone who participated in this Workshop, where some of us undertook the effort to travel afar from China, Sabak Bernam and even Malacca, to ensure the all pertinent voices are heard and represented in mangrove restoration of the NCSC.

We would like to thank our partner IUCN for their ardent support in organising this timely workshop at this juncture, and Chery International, in driving change for the long-term sustainability of the Mangrove Forest Landscape Restoration in the NCSC project.

The very first issue of MNJ Vol 78(1) 2026 starts with an explosive discovery of revisiting a case of a Rhino may be still roaming wild in a lush Borneo forest, perhaps its existence may not actually be extinct!

Besides this epic Bornean Rhino find, other articles features include a comparison of lowland forest bird survey methods; an analysis of microbial diversity and resilience using next-generation sequencing; exploring the costs of insect conservation through entomotourism; students’ perception of university ecotrails as a platform for environment education; and the amazing discovery of a new Alpinia species (Zingiberaceae) from Lenggong, Perak.

At the GEF Small Grants Programme Malaysia National Conference (1-2 April 2026), MNS (Peninsular Malaysia) is honoured to share the stage with our fellow Strategic Grantees of Operational Phase 7 – WormingUp ( Sarawak) and PACOS Trust ( Sabah) to highlight the key lessons, the process of collaborating with partners and local actors, as well as long-term planning and resilience in landscape conservation. Since 2023, MNS spearheaded efforts on the Rantaian Urban Green Spaces (RUGS) project, with the ardent support from GEF SGP and UNDP. Through the shared traditional ecological knowledge and support from the Indigenous Communities of Bukit Lagong and Tasek Bera, the idea of creating biome amongst Klang Valley’s urban landscape for all was relentlessly pursued.

Through the RUGS project, MNS along with our grantees and peers were able to showcase the importance of urban biodiversity and continue championing the idea for contiguous forests across the Klang Valley. The RUGS project would not have been possible without the support and assistance by the dedicated people at UNDP – Lee Shin Shin, Nurul Fitrah Mohd Ariffin Marican, Therese Tiu, Nosrat Ravichandran, Siti Salwa Samsudin, et al.

The Operational Phase 8 (OP8) of GEF Small Grants Programme was unveiled at this auspicious conference, illustrating the path forward for the next three years with focus on species and landscape conservation, as well as sustainable agriculture and fisheries production. As this new SGP OP8 migrates and shifts towards newer landscapes, Klang Valley shall still remain the landscape in focus for urban ecological connectivity, through building resilience with local communities and contributing towards global impact.

MNS shall continue to meaningfully build upon the RUGS project, and revitalising the ecological connectivity of Federal Hill, together with our partners Chee Hoe & Associates and Free Tree Society at Travers Trail, Pulai Trail, Heritage Trail, etc.

As the blessed month of Ramadan draws to a close, we welcome the arrival of Syawal and celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. This special occasion reminds us of the values of gratitude, forgiveness, and togetherness. To all our Muslim members and friends, we extend our warmest wishes – Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Spring tides occur during new and full moons, where the Sun and Moon align, producing the highest and lowest tides of the month. During these periods, marine fishes are known to be more active as the tidal activities stir up nutrients and baitfish, making food sources more accessible. Correspondingly, the fishing communities are most active during the weeks of new and full moon, where marine fishes are more abundant for harvest. Coastal fishing communities have long understood the inherent cycles of their surroundings, and mastered the natural environment for their livelihood.

MNS is proud to host a diversity of NGOs and CSOs from Southeast Asia at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park, on the 4th and 5th of March for the Community and CSO Storytelling Capacity Building Workshop.

Organised by Give to Nature, with the support by Global Environmental Institute and MNS.

The workshop event held for two days, brought about key environmental actors and trainers from China, Philippines, and Malaysia who illustrated how the civil societies can utilise their unique perspectives and experience to tell genuine and poignant stories of their communities and the work they do, through motion pictures, stills, and written media. By empowering one another, the workshop participants gained the confidence to tell their own stories, bringing to light the toil and struggles they endured, and their hopes for a brighter future through the conservation work they undertake.

We thank our partners and friends who participated in this recent workshop and shared their meaningful stories, namely Give to Nature, Global Environmental Institute, BlueSea Services, Huaqiao University, China Blue, TedTalk China, Oceanus Conservation, The NGO Forum on Cambodia, Chroy Svay Fishery Community, Chrolong Fishery Community, Tha-pru Community, Tha-Lane Community, Yagasu, Village Focus International, The Forest House at Perdana Botanical Gardens, Myanmar Forest Association MFA, and MCD Vietnam.

MNS looks forward to further collaboration and partnership with Give to Nature and Global Environmental Institute, contributing to regional environmental conservation with our growing network of peers.
