Adultism shows up when we dismiss, talk over or make decisions for young people without including them. When working with young people, it’s important to pause and ask:
🧩Are we truly listening to what they are saying?
🧩Are we creating space for them to lead and make choices?
🧩Are we aware of the power we hold as adults in the room?

Young people must be heard now, not later. Their experiences, thoughts and feelings matter today! Not only when things take a turn for the worse. We should not wait for harm or crisis to recognise their voices. Making space for children starts when we stop speaking for them, and start listening to them.

MAU and Kemban Kolektif were invited to co-deliver a Child Safeguarding Workshop organised by CHARM Cheerleading Association on 25 August 2025.

With the recent series of gender-based violence (GBV) and child-related cases in Malaysia, it is evident that safeguarding is EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY. It takes a village to raise a child. Each of us has a role in creating safer and more inclusive spaces for young people to grow and thrive and this training was an important step in strengthening our collective capacity to recognise, respond to and prevent violence.

We are grateful to be part of this initiative to build safer and more inclusive spaces for young cheerleaders. This is a first for MAU to be approached by a sports-based organisation who is keen to build capacity on child safeguarding. We applaud Charm Cheerleading Association for the proactive step and we thank Kemban Kolektif who came in to provide the technical knowledge surrounding the Safe Sports Code.

On the 26 of February, MAU joined a closed-door roundtable dialogue with the Third Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, H.E. Kerstin Lundgren and a delegation of Members of Parliament from Sweden at AICB KL.

CSOs were invited to share perspectives on:

🌟Youth:key issues, access to education, youth-led initiatives in bridging divisions and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth.

🌟Women & Children: gender equality, protections against child marriage, Malaysia’s commitments under CEDAW, and women’s representation in leadership, employment and public life.
MAU had the opportunity to share insights from our My Body My Rules (MBMR) sessions and consultations, highlighting the realities faced by children and young people in Malaysia.

We from MAU would like to extend our gratitude 🙏🏽 to .ok.tak as our partner on the Sabah Community Consultation and to for supporting our trip to Sabah 💞

On 2nd August, MAU teamed up with UNICEF’s Young People Advisor Group to run a Digital Safety Workshop for the youth.

Facilitated by Kaiser from MAU, the session took participants through thought provoking reflections, group discussions, and interactive activities which aimed at helping the young people to understand the digital world around them, assess risks and protect themselves and others online.

Kumpulan Rentas Parti Parlimen Malaysia (KRPPM) Mengenai Hak Kanak-kanak telah berjumpa buat kali kedua bagi tahun 2025.

Antara isu yang diketengahkan adalah berkenaan RUU Profesion Kerja Sosial dan keperluannya untuk meningkatkan standard khidmat kerja sosial profesional.

Sebuah dialog yang produktif diadakan dimana ahli-ahli parlimen yang hadir bertanyakan soalan-soalan kritikal kepada para wakil NGO yang hadir berkenaan RUU ini.

Semoga perbincangan penting ini dapat dibawa ke ruang parlimen agar kanak-kanak dan keluarga di Malaysia dapat menikmati manfaat sebuah sektor profesional khidmat kerja sosial yang efektif, menengahkan prinsip hak kanak-kanak dan mengutamakan hal ehwal mangsa.
