Be the Safe Adult You Want Young People to Have

What does it actually mean to be a safe adult for young people? And how can we do better for the communities around us?
MAU’s Child Rights workshop is a space to explore exactly that.

Spend a few hours learning about child rights, reflecting on the role adults play in young people’s lives, asking questions, sharing your thoughts and learning from one another.

You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room: participate as much (or as little) as you’re comfortable with. What matters is that you leave with new knowledge, new perspectives and a better understanding of how you can be a safe and supportive adult in a young person’s life.

Pada 14 Ogos 2026, MAU telah menyertai Sesi Libat Urus Belanjawan 2027 Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM) yang dirasmikan oleh YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Menteri Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat, bersama wakil NGO yang memperjuangkan isu wanita, kanak-kanak, warga emas, OKU dan kumpulan masyarakat lain.

Dalam sesi ini, Fir, Advocacy Lead MAU mengetengahkan 4 daripada 6 tindakan segera dari Concluding Observations hasil daripada State Dialogue antara Malaysia dan Komiti Hak Kanak-kanak , sebuah proses yang telah bermula dari 2025 sehingga Februari 2026.

Mesej kami adalah jelas: Isu hak kanak-kanak tidak patut bergantung kepada belas ihsan masyarakat dan ketersediaan dana dan sumber. Ini adalah sebuah pilihan yang patut dibuat oleh dan Kerajaan sebagai komitmen kepada yang telah diratifiksikan oleh negara kita sejak tahun 1999.

Growing up online meant growing up in public.

For Fattannah, the internet was a place of connection, curiosity, and belonging but also a space where they had to navigate risks they were never prepared for.

This reflection is a reminder that children don’t need less curiosity, they need safer digital spaces to explore it.

Online safety shouldn’t depend on children knowing how to protect themselves. It should be built into the platforms they use, supported by trusted adults and strengthened by communities that care.

Because children are already online. The question is: are we building an internet that’s safe enough for them?

For five days, civil society organisations, children, and young people came together to champion one shared vision: a Malaysia where every child’s rights are recognised, protected and upheld.

The Child Rights Symposium 2026 created spaces for meaningful dialogue with Parliament, the legal profession, businesses and communities, turning years of advocacy into conversations that can shape real change.

From legislative reform to child participation, digital safety, access to justice and ensuring no child is left behind, this is only the beginning. The work continues, and so does our commitment to building a future where every child can thrive. 💛

Our last APPGM event was Let’s Eat This: Children’s Rights Youth Dialogue with Law Experts 🍽️✨

The evening brought together young people and child rights experts for honest, meaningful conversations on the issues that matter most to children and youth today.

Participants were divided into three thematic groups: Sexuality Education, Digital Rights, and Child Participation, where they had the opportunity to engage in intimate discussions with child rights experts, including Ton Liefaard, Melissa Akhir, and Rehana Dole.

Through a series of rotating dialogue rounds, participants explored how youth’s rights are experienced in their daily lives, reflected on current challenges and shared their own perspectives on creating a more child-rights-centred future.

One of the most powerful takeaways from the session was the reminder that children are not merely beneficiaries of rights but rights holders whose voices, experiences and evolving capacities must be respected and meaningfully included in decisions that affect them.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, shared their experiences and contributed to these important conversations. Here’s to continuing to build spaces where young people are heard, valued and empowered.
