Plugged In Malaysia

Plugged In Malaysia Bridging the digital gap in Malaysia by ensuring that children in low income families can access edu How can we “bridge the digital divide” ?

I’m John Ling and I started “Plugged In Malaysia” in June 2021 when I was 15. By 2021, education in Malaysia had been interrupted for two academic years due to Covid. While I had great teachers who did their best to ensure online learning remained enthralling and engaging, more importantly I had a computer to even access the e-learning. After my IGCSE exams I wanted to do more about the “Digital D

ivide”. This is the split between students who are able to access e-learning and students from low income families who do not have a computer. From this question “Plugged In Malaysia” was born. It takes old computers, destined to become e-waste, refurbishes them and donates them to students who need them.

I founded PIM in June 2021 when I was 15, after my IGCSE exams. That summer, Malaysia was still in the middle of what turned out to be a two year lockdown from COVID-19. Today, two and a half years later, I am putting it to rest. Right now, I’m in the middle of a cybersecurity and AI internship at AmBank during my gap year and I’ll be leaving for university in 2024.

What PIM achieved:
171 old unusable computers donated and where possible refurbished
32 individual donors
5 corporate donors
2 collaborating NGOs: MYReaders & REC (5 UNHCR schools)
70% success rate creating usable computers from e-waste
39 team members (volunteers)
PIM’s work enriched the lives of over 850 students.

Although in the grand scheme of things I know that this is an incredibly small charity,
I like to think PIM helped a little to bridge the digital divide. If even one child can use a PIM laptop to work their way to a better life then PIM has succeeded.

Thank you to so many individuals and companies who donated and helped through this journey. Thank you all so much.

Our congratulations to REC (Rohingya Education Centre) for your students’ successes. Congratulations in particular to Nor, Anwar and Umur who have received university offers to study Education, IT and Mechanical Engineering. Also to Najamul who will study Islamic Studies.

PIM have supported REC since we were founded in June 2021, with computers to its 5 UNHCR schools around Malaysia. To hear of these students and the others who have completed their high school education is truly inspirational. Where some of the students have needed laptops to take to university, has been proud to step in to help. This is in action.

Plugged In Malaysia is 2 years old next month. I want to thank the team at Mont Kiara International School for their hard work every Monday afternoon. Good luck with your IB exams and university. Special thanks to
Jasper, Geert, Max, Rassam, Jay, Kynan and to MKIS’ Head of Science: Mr Ferry Kemperman. Thank you for your passion, drive and enthusiastic support.

The PIM journey has been the most fulfilling one of my life, not only because of the work, but the people I’ve met over the years.

Today is the last day of school for me as I start study leave to prepare for my A level exams. I want to thank Mr James Abela, the Head of Computing at Garden International School for starting me on my coding journey when I was 11. I will study Computer Science at university and this dream would not have been possible without his continuous support and encouragement over the last 6 years.

Mr Abela is a finalist for the Cambridge University Press “2023 Dedicated Teacher of the Year”. Mr Abela, you always say how proud you are of your students.
We are very proud of you.

A box of laptops were dropped off today to be refurbished by the team at MKIS (Mont Kiara International School). Thank you Mr Ferry Kemperman, Mirolim and Geert for your team’s support and hard work!

I’m sorry I didn’t see you all today, but my A levels mock exams at my own school starts tomorrow so I’m hitting the books.

When I started Plugged In Malaysia in June 2021 when I was 15, I never imagined 19 months later it would still be thriving. Thank you to all our supporters.

Plugged In Malaysia is 18 months old and one of our exciting developments has been a collaboration with the Computers For Malaysia club at M‘KIS, an local international school.

As PIM’s reputation grows, the challenge is no longer getting computer donations, but the need for extra hands to do the refurbishment work.

Thank you Mr Ferry Kemperman and your students at M’KIS for coming to the rescue. It’s always inspiring to talk to like minded students at another school and to know we share the same desire to bridge the digital divide

Here are 6 refurbished computers donated to students of a minority group in KL.
