🥵Scientists say 2026 could be the hottest year in Malaysia's history. A powerful El Niño is expected to peak between now till early next year with a probability of over 80% forming during our Southwest Monsoon season.

This means a rising risk of drought, forest fires, and haze hitting us all at once. This isn't just bad weather. Climate experts say current heat conditions are consistent with long-term climate change trends rising global temperatures driving more frequent and intense extreme weather events.

And deforestation is making it worse. Every forest cleared means less shade, less rainfall, and more heat absorbed into our land.

Where does haze come from?

Right now, air quality levels in several states, including our capital city of Kuala Lumpur is in the unhealthy range.

Haze like this isn't a naturally occurring phenomenon, but we've been experiencing it for decades now, just as the palm oil industry has been negatively linked to haze and transboundary haze for decades.

But are we blaming palm oil for haze?

Nope.

The point is that forest and peatland destruction are at its root cause, and we have continuously provided evidence for our government and the ASEAN region to hold corporations involved in transboundary haze, accountable.

Palm oil is not the problem, but we need responsible companies to commit to No Deforestation, No Peat, and No Exploitation (NDPE) supply chains.

Schools are already cutting outdoor activities and asking students to wear sports attire because the heat has become too extreme to learn normally. And now, haze is making things worse. Malaysia is seeing a return of haze as dry weather and an intensifying El Niño combine with fires in Indonesia with experts warning that air quality could worsen in the coming weeks.

Haze conditions in Sarawak have worsened, with 11 areas recording unhealthy API readings as of this week with Serian hitting 189, approaching very unhealthy levels. Even Johan Setia in Selangor recorded unhealthy API levels this isn't just a Sarawak problem.

API levels between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy, posing health risks particularly to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Our forests regulate temperature and reduce the risk of fires that cause this haze. But they are disappearing.

If you can smell the haze, the problem is already here.

Seven areas in Malaysia recorded unhealthy air quality recently, with Serian reaching an API of 171. At the same time, hotspots and smoke plumes were detected across parts of Kalimantan and Sumatra, with smoke drifting into Sarawak.

But haze isn't simply a seasonal inconvenience. When forests and peatlands are damaged, they become more vulnerable to fire releasing pollution and carbon into the atmosphere.
Protecting forests means protecting the air we breathe.

First thought in your head when we say 'riverside'...

As part of Plastics Free July, we worked with Kebun-Kebun Sungai Klang, alongside volunteers and people who were just interested to do their part.

So what did you picture? Tranquil calm, dipping feet by the river as life slows down while it passes? Not a chance!

Think 700 plastic bottles from one brand alone and sachets everywhere, digging up piles of garbage that just kept coming in to be sorted...and lots of smells that would make your stomach churn.

Of course we didn't get to "End the Plastic Tide". But we unearthed waste, collected the plastic, sorted, and audited what we found. From there, we can identify top polluters, and better understand how to hold corporations accountable.

This was more than your average gotong-royong - it is building citizen science evidence that can help shape positive change so we can prevent waste from being in nature.
