In conjunction with our recent Malaysia Day and International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, let us be reminded of how Transboundary Haze has become a part of our regional DNA over the decades; and how this should have never been the case.

We've protested at the Indonesian Embassy. We filed complaint with SUHAKAM to ensure environmental rights like our right to clean, is declared as a human rights issue. But here's a lookback on some other creative ways we've worked together with artists to shed a light and raise awareness on the need for action on haze over the years.

Sarawak and Kalimantan remain heavily plagued with thick and hazardous air. When will stern action be taken against the corporations contributing to the peatland degradation and forest fires? When will we see clear, blue skies again?

From 2–4 September, one of the region’s most influential energy events took place at KLCC, bringing together 2,000+ participating companies and 30,000+ industry visitors under the banner, “POWERING PROGRESS, SHAPING TOMORROW”.

But what kind of future are we really shaping? We already know the destruction we see around us is deeply connected to our continued dependence on fossil fuels yet fossil fuels are still being pushed as part of our “future”.

In solidarity with communities and ecosystems harmed by fossil fuels, Greenpeace Malaysia and the Artivist Network staged a flashmob featuring Pak Dogol vs Pak Tamak; a symbolic protest against the greed of oil and gas corporations hiding behind the language of “progress” and “the future”.

What is the meaning of progress if our planet is becoming increasingly unliveable? Is our current ways of progress worth more than human lives as we witnessed in the Putra Heights disaster last year or do you think we need a change too?

Progress is loudly celebrated. But when the suffering left in its wake continues to be ignored, unheard and denied justice, then are we really progressing?

We say... enough!

There can be no just future built on fossil fuels. People and the planet must come before profit.

Check the API in your own neighbourhood right now, Johan Setia, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Klang have all been sitting in "unhealthy" territory this week. Selangor is on standby to shut schools the moment readings cross 200.

Greenpeace Malaysia stood outside the Indonesian Embassy in KL, not to point fingers, but to demand the truth. Indonesian authorities are investigating 19 companies linked to over 11,000 hectares of burnt land. We're calling on them to publicly release the evidence - fire locations, investigation findings, and who owns the concessions. If Malaysian companies are implicated, we'll demand our own government hold them accountable too.

As our campaign manager put it - the haze doesn't stop at Indonesia's borders and neither should accountability.

When forests burn, wildlife have nowhere else to run.
Sempurna, an orangutan rescued from a fire zone in Borneo, died shortly after his body overwhelmed by smoke inhalation before he could recover. The same toxic air is now choking our own communities majorly in Sarawak and all over Malaysia, because haze knows no borders.

Hundreds of fire hotspots are still burning across Kalimantan, many on vulnerable peatlands. We have, and will continue to take a stand for the clean air we deserve. On Sept 4, we brought demands to the Indonesian Embassy, calling for answers and transparency on the identified companies linked to forest fires, especially Malaysian-owned companies.

Why? So our country can be equally accountable for this mess that people and wildlife are paying the price for.

The haze problem remains unresolved despite decades.

⚠️🚨Today Greenpeace Malaysia together with Himpunan Advokasi Rakyat Malaysia (HARAM), is bringing the people’s voices forward through a peaceful gathering to submit a memorandum to the Embassy of Indonesia.

Stop the blame game while those responsible for the destruction of peatlands and forest fires that recur every year remain protected and unaccountable.

The Indonesian authorities are investigating 19 companies holding concessions where fires had affected 11,047 hectares across seven provinces, so we urgently demand that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia clearly disclose the Malaysian companies involved in the peatland fires and environmental destruction taking place in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Instead of taking decisive action, various parties continue to point fingers at one another, even though this is clearly an environmental crime (or crisis) that demands immediate government intervention. It is painfully clear that meaningful action will only happen if governments choose to act with firmness, integrity, and transparency.

Expose those responsible.
Name the culprits.
Take action now!

People are suffering. Our health is at risk. Our lives are in danger. This cannot continue year after year.

Earlier this morning, The Artivist Network, Greenpeace Malaysia, Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation (MSN), and Rimbawatch cast a shadow on the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in conjunction with the 2026 Oil and Gas Asia (OGA) exhibition, themed 'Powering Progress and Shape Tomorrow.'⁣

In Wayang Kulit style, our Pak Dogol made his stance clear by farting away corporate destruction of our planet and the greenwashing with false solution of fossil gas as an transition fuel. Fossil gas cannot continue to expand. We also call for better information transparency and accountability in the Oil and Gas industry, in addition to prioritising meaningful consultations with people before and throughout the implementation of gas projects. ⁣
⁣
As a follow-up, we will be having a Gassy Picnic in the Park this 5 September 2026, which will highlight reliance on how fossil gas affects community security, and what a better solution would be for a just, clean, and safe energy transition. Happy 69th National Day, Malaysia!

Malaysia MADANI: Shared Prosperity | Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati.

As we celebrate our independence, let’s also be honest about the reality we live in. Is prosperity truly being shared by everyone?

Today, our environment remains polluted, our forests continue to be threatened, and haze is once again choking the air we all share.

Because prosperity is not just about economic growth and development. Without a healthy environment, there can be no true shared prosperity.

This Merdeka, let’s work towards a Malaysia free from pollution, environmental destruction and the greed that puts our future at risk.

Best juga tengok kita berdebat. Malaysia salahkan Indonesia. Indonesia salahkan angin. Angin pula… tak boleh masuk WhatsApp group untuk defend diri.

Sedangkan rakyat kedua-dua negara dah lama tahu tembelang sebenarnya.

Jerebu bukan salah rakyat Malaysia. Bukan salah rakyat Indonesia.

Jutaan rakyat terpaksa hirup udara tercemar, hadkan aktiviti luar, risau tentang anak-anak dan keluarga, sementara pihak berkuasa masih bergelut dengan alasan dan penguatkuasaan yang tidak cukup tegas.

Dan yang paling menarik?

Bila asap merentas sempadan, kita dibiar bergaduh sesama sendiri.
Siapa yang terus mendapat untung apabila hutan dan tanah gambut dimusnahkan?
Siapa yang sepatutnya menguatkuasakan undang-undang?
Dan siapa yang selama ini gagal memastikan penjenayah alam benar-benar dipertanggungjawabkan?

Jangan biarkan kita terus bergaduh Malaysia vs Indonesia.
Rakyat Malaysia dan Indonesia bukan musuh. Kita menghirup asap yang sama. Kita menanggung akibat yang sama.

Sudah tiba masanya suara rakyat bersatu untuk menuntut syarikat yang merosakkan alam dan pemerintah yang gagal melindungi rakyat supaya bertanggungjawab.
