On 18 May 2026, MWIA participated in the Dialogue Programme with the Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Timber Industry Stakeholders, held in Olak Lempit. The session, officiated by YB Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, brought together industry associations to engage in an open and constructive discussion on the key challenges faced by the timber sector.

Among the issues raised were current geopolitical tensions, rising diesel prices, the impact of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), and ongoing concerns surrounding Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP). Additional topics included foreign labour shortages, increasing production costs, raw material availability, and growing competition from imported finished timber products in the domestic market.

MWIA’s Secretary General highlighted specific concerns regarding the listing of Shorea under CITES and Annex D of the EU Wildlife Trade Regulation, emphasising its implications for the industry.

In response, YB Minister acknowledged the challenges raised and agreed that the Ministry will establish a dedicated working group to systematically address and resolve these issues.
