Global cancer cases are expected to rise by 77 percent by the year 2050, according to the World Health Organization.

The increase, from 20 million now to 35 million, is due to an aging population plus health factors such as to***co and alcohol use, obesity, and the environment, a WHO report says.

Lung cancer is the most common type, with 2.5 million new cases in 2022, followed closely by breast cancer in women, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. Lung cancer also causes more deaths than any other type - 1.8 million in 2022.

The report says people in less-developed countries will experience a disproportionate increase in cancer rates and "bear the brunt of the global cancer burden."

WHO is working with those countries to improve cancer care, but major funding is urgently needed.

One expert noted, "Where someone lives should not determine whether they live."
