The project aims to better understand and protect the population of sea turtles around Perhentian Islands. To identify individual sea turtles

In collaboration with Department of Fisheries Perhentian Turtle Crew, we are

1. To identify sea turtle nesting, foraging and resting grounds
2. To assist Department of Fisheries Malaysia to patrol nesting beach
4. To study the cause of the death for dead turtles (necropsy)
5. To create and increase conservation awareness among locals and tourists

The Perhentian Turtle Project was invited to the 2025 International Sea Turtle and Cetacean Symposium cm Workshop, a collaborative effort between the Taiwan Cetacean Society and the Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab, hosted at City University of Hong Kong. The symposium brought together researchers, veterinary professionals, conservation organizations, and local stakeholders from more than ten countries to share and discuss unique cases within their respective regions. Participants also had the chance to explore new technological advancements in cetacean and sea turtle biology and ecology.

We are deeply honoured to have participated in such a rich and insightful event, where every presentation showcased unique rescue and rehabilitation cases along with valuable perspectives. We were proud to share a glimpse of the sea turtle conservation efforts taking place in Malaysia.

A big thank you to for this priceless opportunity, for making it possible for us to attend the symposium, and for their continued support. We hope to continue making a positive impact on sea turtle conservation efforts in Malaysia.

This isn’t a goodbye, but a see you later 👋🏼

As October trudges on, we say goodbye to the 2025 season. Hatchlings are released, mattresses are wrapped up, cameras packed up in anticipation of the northeast monsoon season, during which we are not operational on the island.

It has been a fruitful season filled with amazing people, incredible laughter and unforgettable memories. Stay tuned for 2025 moments being shared here as we wrap up.

We take the photos and identify the turtles if we have seen them before. If they are new you get to name the turtle!
