𝐅𝐌𝐌 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐊𝐈𝐏

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) Sabah Branch has called for sustainable measures to address the potential recurring flooding issue in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), following a meeting with KKIP Sdn Bhd today.

The meeting was held at the KKIP Sdn Bhd office on October 1, 2026. FMM Sabah was led by its Chairman, Mr. Liaw Hen Kong met Madam Cecilia Amid, CEO of KKIP Sdn Bhd and Ir. Mahyun Ahmad, Group Manager, Technical Service Department, KKIP Sdn Bhd and Ts. Richard Kingki, Director, Drainage Engineering, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the concessionaire, Pembinaan Kekal Mewah (PKM).

FMM Sabah Branch highlighted the adverse impact of the recent flooding in KKIP, particularly on factories, warehouses, vehicles and business operations. While the rainfall experienced on 28 September 2026 was heavy, FMM noted that similar heavy rainfall had occurred in the past. However, the recent incident resulted in water levels rising rapidly, with some members reporting that floodwaters reached factory and warehouse areas within approximately two hours of heavy rain.

The rapid rise in water levels also affected the ability of businesses and workers to move vehicles to safer locations, as several roads within KKIP had already become flooded within a short period. One FMM member estimated losses of approximately RM90,000 arising from the recent flooding incident.

DBKK explained that the existing detention and retention ponds in the area were functioning as intended to manage stormwater runoff and mitigate localised flooding.

However, DBKK also acknowledged that the recent situation was exceptional, with high-tide conditions elevating water levels in the Telipok, Salut and Menggabung rivers. The high water levels, coupled with heavy rainfall and increased stormwater runoff, placed significant pressure on the existing drainage and detention system, affecting its capacity to effectively discharge stormwater from the industrial area.

DBKK noted that further feasibility studies would be required before a proposal for expansion of the detention system could be submitted, particularly given the substantial funding that would be required. However, the immediate practical measure is by installation of pumping facilities to discharge floodwater from the industrial area into the detention ponds.

FMM Sabah Branch Chairman, Mr. Liaw Hen Kong, said the recent flooding should serve as a reminder that the current flood mitigation measures need to be continually reviewed and strengthened in view of the combined pressures arising from climate change, rapid urbanisation and ongoing development within KKIP.

“Flooding can no longer be viewed merely as a seasonal nuisance. It is becoming an increasingly pressing challenge that can affect livelihoods, infrastructure and business operations. A reliable and resilient flood mitigation system is important to maintain business continuity and investor confidence in KKIP,” he said.

He added that repeated flooding could also create a negative perception of KKIP and potentially affect its attractiveness to both local and foreign investors.

FMM Sabah Branch also noted that flood mitigation should be considered as part of KKIP’s broader infrastructure development and long-term planning.

The Branch was invited to a meeting on September 29, 2026, to discuss the upcoming TVET Energy Connect 2026, an event organised by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) to be held on October 16-17, 2026 at Menara Kinabalu. The objectives are to expose TVET students to career opportunities and future prospects in the energy sector as well as insights into industry requirements and expectations.

This event is in line with the 𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟎 (𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐏 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟎), a pragmatic move towards cleaner energy by leveraging the state's abundant renewable energy sources to ensure a reliable, accessible, affordable and sustainable energy supply, while encouraging the development, commercialisation and adoption of green technologies. This transition requires a highly skilled, competent and future-ready local workforce to support the transformation of energy technologies as Sabah moves towards green energy.

The Branch in collaboration with the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), successfully organised the 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐒𝐇 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 supported by DOSH, Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Sabah, Sedafiat Sdn Bhd, Sabah Energy Corporation and Dr. Lim Jac Fang. The seminar served as an excellent platform to strengthen strategic networks among the government agencies and departments, OSH practitioners and industry players through the sharing of experiences, practical solutions and new safety and health requirements. A courtesy visit was made to YBrs. Madam Noemi Dyena John Tren, President of Penampang Municipal Council, on September 15, 2026, at her office in Penampang. The visit was led by FMM Sabah Branch Chairman, Mr. Liaw Hen Kong, and accompanied by Mr. Ho Shi Yin, Vice-Chairman; Ms. Alice Cham Sat Li, Vice-Chairman; and Mr. Lim Chin Wah, a member of FMM Sabah Branch.

The visit highlighted the need for additional industrial land in Penampang to accommodate the growing number of businesses in the area, issues concerning high trading licence fees, as well as the progress of road infrastructure and flood mitigation projects in Penampang.

FMM Sabah Branch also took the opportunity to invite Madam Noemi Dyena John Tren to attend the Branch’s upcoming networking session in December 2026.
