Borneo Eco Film Festival

Borneo Eco Film Festival BORNEO ECO FILM FESTIVAL (BEFF) celebrates Borneo's biocultural diversity through year-round SUARA Community Filmmaking workshops and environmental films.

The BORNEO ECO FILM FESTIVAL (BEFF) is a non-profit event celebrating Borneo's biocultural diversity through nurturing local storytelling through its year-round SUARA Community Filmmaking workshops and showcasing exclusive premieres of environmental films. OUR GOALS
'Educate' through new knowledge on ecological and cultural issues
'Expose' through environmental films that stimulate discussion
'

Engage' storytellers through a platform for community filmmaking

BEFF is divided into three parts:
ENVIRONMENTAL CINEMA is a weekend of film screenings connecting local audiences with the environmental and social themes underpinning change and resilience today. Over 100 films have screened to 6,000+ people from Kota Kinabalu and the surrounds. We carefully handpick these films for their thoughtful narrative, artful expression and the ability to translate complex issues into accessible messages that delight, entertain and inspire audiences to understand our relationship with nature and society. SUARA COMMUNITY FILMMAKING is BEFF’s flagship training programme designed especially for rural communities who want to use film and storytelling to engage with their target audience. Over 180 community members from 20+ villages and towns across Sabah have been supported. There are currently 15 active community filmmaking teams in the programme, operating in 8 districts in Sabah. Filmmaking workshops are helmed by a pool of 20+ leading creative industry professionals who support community filmmakers to gain the technical skills, artistry and confidence to tell their stories, communicate their point of view effectively, and compel community action and support. SUARA PUBLIKA is a series of outreach platforms that enables urban communities to learn from direct engagement with leading experts and local practitioners who are working on conservation and sustainability in Sabah and more widely. Over 40 talks have been held during festival season, in addition to outreach to 1,000+ students in 10 educational institutions across Kota Kinabalu. In 2017, we launched the Young Leaders for Sustainability initiative to work with 30 urban youths to unpack the concept of sustainable development, share views and discuss the everyday options that young Sabahans can take to promote sustainable living in their communities.

Her life was a testament to love for animals, for nature, and for humanity. She showed us that kindness, curiosity, and perseverance can change the world. Through her work among the chimpanzees, she taught us to see the dignity in every creature, to listen when others are voiceless, and to fight for hope even when the darkness seems overwhelming.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall

With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future.

In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world.

The Jane Goodall Institute is incredibly grateful to all our supporters, partners, and friends, especially during this difficult time. To add a personal remembrance of Dr. Goodall and continue her legacy for future generations, please visit JaneGoodall.org/RememberingJane
