Transforming Sabah’s palm oil production and supply chains through jurisdictional certification.

Sabah Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative (JASPO) is a multi-stakeholder initiative under the Sabah State Government to achieve 100% certified sustainable oil palm production across the entire state of Sabah. By 2025, JASPO aims to achieve 100% readiness for state-wide certification for Sabah. Sabah is the first state to pilot jurisdictional certification in the world. Thro

ugh this initiative, the State Government is committed to transforming Sabah’s palm oil production and supply chains, halting deforestation, restoring ecosystems, and securing sustainable livelihoods.

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘂𝗱𝘂 (𝟯–𝟱 𝗔𝘂𝗴)!🌴

Our SOPIA GM and JASPO team, with partner Sawit Kinabalu - Laman Rasmi Group, met the District Office and Pejabat Pemaju Mukim officers to talk through our pilot with European Forest Institute — covering all smallholders in the district towards 100% certified production of sustainable palm oil by 2028.

We also explored ways to work with Forest Solution Management, where collaboration could help mitigate issues on the ground followed by a visit to Sawit Kinabalu's Langkon Mill to learn about their supply chain operations.

The visit was made extra special with an invite to the Kebun Dapur program launch, officiated by Kementerian Pertanian, Perikanan dan Industri Makanan Sabah Minister YB Datuk Jamawi Jaafar!

On 27 July, JASPO and Earthworm Foundation co-hosted the first Technical Working Group meeting at our office — kicking off work on the Labour Recruitment Best Practice guidance framework.

This will form the foundation of a Sabah-specific reference document for ethical labour recruitment. Next up: bringing our stakeholders on the ground into the conversation. Exciting times ahead!

On 24–25 July, we kicked things off in Tawau with a pre-engagement workshop for a wider group of stakeholders. Great energy in the room as we start this journey together.

This week, the JASPO Secretariat is hosting a 3-day workshop to kick off brainstorming on the Jurisdictional Entity (JE) certification pathway — the first of its kind.

Sabah is one of only 3 flagship pilots in the world chosen to certify its producers through the Jurisdictional Approach (JA) — and the only statewide JA anywhere.

Building a system to future-proof the industry is no small task. But with the right team and committed partners, the work continues.

The JA pilot is taking off. The system must be tested. Join us and support our journey towards statewide certified sustainable palm oil production in Sabah.

JASPO Sdn. Bhd., through the Sabah JASPO Secretariat, is looking for a qualified consultant to support an important smallholder-focused project under the Malaysia Smallholder Project Mission – Sabah, Malaysia Oil Palm Sector.

This project will support oil palm smallholders and supply chain actors in Kota Marudu towards EUDR readiness, MSPO certification preparedness, and stronger inclusion in sustainable value chains.

The consultant will help lead field implementation, smallholder profiling, farm mapping, stakeholder coordination, compliance gap assessment, ICS testing, and project reporting.

This role is suitable for someone who has experience in sustainability, oil palm, smallholder development, EUDR/MSPO/RSPO, traceability, GIS/mapping, or field-based project coordination.

Location: Kota Marudu, Sabah
Contract period: June 2026 to June 2027

We are looking for someone with:

• At least five years of relevant experience
• A background in agriculture, forestry, sustainability, rural development, GIS, supply chain management, or related fields
• Strong communication and reporting skills
• Experience working with smallholders or rural communities
• Ability to work independently and closely with stakeholders on the ground

Sabah JASPO bersama Earthworm Foundation telah mengadakan sesi pengenalan bertajuk "Memperkukuh Amalan Terbaik dalam Pengambilan Pekerja di Sabah," yang berlangsung di Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) pada 27 April 2026.

Sesi ini dibuka oleh Julia Majail, Pengarah Sabah JASPO Secretariat, yang turut memegang jawatan sebagai Pengurus Besar Sabah Oil Palm Industry Organisation (SOPIA) — badan baharu di bawah Kementerian Pertanian, Perikanan dan Industri Makanan Sabah (MAFFI) yang ditubuhkan bagi mengukuhkan tadbir urus dan pembangunan industri sawit Sabah. Ucapan pembukaan beliau memberikan gambaran penting tentang landskap institusi yang sedang berkembang, serta tanggungjawab bersama semua pihak berkepentingan dalam membina ekosistem pengambilan pekerja yang lebih adil.

Sesi ini mempertemukan pelbagai pihak berkepentingan, termasuk:
• Jabatan/Agensi Kerajaan: Jabatan Imigresen Negeri Sabah, Jabatan Tenaga Kerja Sabah, Pejabat Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri dan Penyelidikan Sabah, dan Institute for Development Studies Sabah
• Pemain Industri: Sawit Kinabalu Group, IOI Corporation Berhad, Wild Asia, Sabah Land Development Board dan Wilmar International
• Masyarakat Sivil: WWF-Malaysia, Forever Sabah dan Sabah Plantation Industry Employees Union (SPEIU), East Malaysia Planters' Association (EMPA), Malaysia Palm Oil Association (MPOA) dan UNDP Malaysia.

Prof. Madya Dr. Andika Ab. Wahab dari Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia membentangkan dapatan kajian berkenaan pengambilan pekerja asing di Sabah, sebagai asas kepada pembangunan garis panduan amalan terbaik yang praktikal untuk pengusaha ladang bersaiz sederhana dan pekebun kecil.

Program ini menyokong usaha Kerajaan Negeri Sabah dalam menyelaraskan amalan pengambilan pekerja dengan peraturan Malaysia dan piawaian buruh antarabangsa. Dengan kehadiran SOPIA dalam landskap ini, kami menantikan koordinasi yang lebih kukuh antara kerajaan, industri, dan masyarakat sivil pada masa hadapan.
