Bornean Stubtail The Tiny Ghost of the Mountain Forest in Borneo

Hidden deep in the cool mossy forests of Borneo lives one of the island’s smallest and most secretive birds, the Bornean Stubtail (Urosphena whiteheadi).

First described in 1888 by British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, the species was based on specimens collected from the legendary slopes of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. Its scientific name whiteheadi honors explorer and naturalist John Whitehead, who helped reveal many of Borneo’s unique birds to the world.

✨ Fun Facts
* Despite being a bird, it moves through the undergrowth in a mouse-like way, quietly creeping between bushes.
* It is often heard more than seen. Its call is a thin, high-pitched note that many people miss completely.
* True to its name, it has an incredibly short tail, making it look round and compact.

Only about 9.5–10 cm long, this tiny forest dweller wears soft brown upperparts, pale greyish underparts, a warm buff eyebrow stripe, and delicate pink legs. Modest in color, but full of charm.

To spot one in the wild is a privilege, not because it is rare, but because it chooses to remain unseen.
