Most conservation projects fail for one simple reason — everyone goes home.

The scientists finish their research. The volunteers finish their trip. And the reef just sits there, unmonitored, unprotected, slowly dying again.

On Usukan Island we learned this the hard way.

Conservation only works if the people living closest to the reef are the ones running it. Not visiting it. Not studying it. Actually running it.

Here are 5 reasons why community is the most important part of conservation — and why without it, nothing else matters.

While visiting the wetlands behind Usukan Island, we encountered alot of people looking for mangrove clams. so Vale, one of our dive masters, took his time to look for "GOLD" instead of clams 😹

When you trade your 9-5 to volunteer on an island in Borneo, this is what happens:

- you wake up and sleep at the same time consistently everyday

- your childlike curiousity to explore the island starts to come out

- you connect better with people and your surroundings since you're not on your phone alot

- In a very distracted world, you start to pay attention to things better

- your screen time starts to drop dramatically

- you learn alot about the culture and the place you're saying

- little things start to feel exciting

- you feel alot more present with yourself instead of thinking about the past and future too much

If that's not a better reason to join us, then I don't know what is

Island life is not for everyone, but a very select few will change their lives because of it

the need for the natural world is as high as ever, and that's why you need to go out and touch grass hehe

This area is our Mangrove Conservation area. We planted 500 mangrove trees in June 2022.
These area also one of the migrating birds landing/resting area.
