The Hospital Kota Marudu Cancer Awareness Fun Run (7km) was successfully organized through a joint collaboration between the General Surgery Department of HKM and the Sabah Surgical Society. The event aimed to promote healthy lifestyles, raise critical awareness about cancer prevention and early detection, and foster community engagement within the region. The event was officially graced and flagged off by YB Datuk Dr. Maijol Mahap, ADUN N.6 Bandau.

The run attracted a diverse group of fitness enthusiasts and health advocates, recording a total of 174 participants. To ensure fair competition and widespread engagement, the 7km run was divided into four distinct categories: Mens’ Open, Women’s Open, Men’s Veteran & Women’s Veteran.

Beyond the run, the event served as a public health platform. Three specialized exhibition booths were set up to educate the community and provide valuable medical insights:

Booth 1: Cancer Awareness (Breast & Colorectal Malignancies)
Managed by the surgical team, this booth focused on the early detection of breast and colorectal cancers. Interactive demonstrations on Self-Breast Examination (SBE) were conducted, alongside educational showcases on the role of endoscopies in screening and diagnosis.

Booth 2: Pharmacy Department
Provided counseling on medication safety, proper medication storage, and public education on identifying medication safely.

Booth 3: Organ Donation Awareness
Encouraged the community to pledge as organ donors, breaking myths and highlighting the life-saving impact of transplantation.

This event successfully bridged the gap between medical professionals and the local Kota Marudu community through a sports-centric approach. YB Datuk Dr. Maijol Mahap’s presence underscored the local government’s support for healthcare initiatives in the constituency. Participants did not just engage in physical activity but left with actionable knowledge regarding cancer screenings and organ donation.
