Lions Hearing Center D308-B1 in collaboration with CCEP Foundation 扶贫基金会 is working relentlessly to assist P'ng Zhen Jie, a boy who was born with Bilateral Profound Sensorineural Hearing Loss to regain his hearing. This is not a miracle but a miracle waiting to happen...
This is P'ng Zhen Jie's story:
P’ng Zhen Jie is a 7-year-old boy who was found to have hearing problems at a very young age. When he was about two years old, he was brought to Seremban Government Hospital for a hearing check. However, the family is not sure whether doctors at that time advised a cochlear implant. Soon after that, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and no further hospital follow-ups were done.
Since then, Zhen Jie has been using hearing aids, but according to his family, the hearing aids have not helped him much.
Zhen Jie is the third child in his family. His elder sister is also deaf and mute and is currently studying at a special school for the deaf, where communication is done through sign language. Zhen Jie understands basic sign language as well. In 2026, he started Primary One at a school for the deaf.
Yvonne Yee, CEO of CCEP Foundation, first met Zhen Jie at a children’s home. She made many efforts to locate his family and eventually found his mother. Through further understanding, it was discovered that both of Zhen Jie’s parents are deaf and mute, and even his grandmother has the same condition.
Yvonne Yee personally visited Zhen Jie’s mother and uncle and learned that the family has no financial ability to arrange further medical tests or treatment for him.
Because of this, assistance was requested from Lions Hearing Centre, which helped arrange a full hearing assessment at Hearlife Hearing Centre. The test results confirmed that Zhen Jie has severe hearing loss.
Following this, Lions Hearing Centre arranged for an online consultation and confirmation by ENT specialist Prof. Tang. Based on the findings, Prof. Tang advised that Zhen Jie would likely need a cochlear implant surgery. However, a full medical scan is still required to confirm whether he is fully suitable for the implant.
If Zhen Jie is confirmed to be eligible for cochlear implant surgery, CCEP Foundation will assist in fundraising to help him obtain the cochlear implant and give him a chance to hear, learn, and communicate better in the future.
