Moving Past Hate: Looking at the Refugee Crisis Through the Lens of Our Rukun Negara
Lately, there has been a rise in tension and hostile rhetoric directed at Rohingya community in Malaysia. In moment like these, it is easy to allow fear, frustration, or misinformation to shape our reactions. However, if we return to the core principles od our National philosophy, the Rukun Negara, we will find a clear, humane and principled path forward.
Our fifth pillar, Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan (Good Behaviour and Morality), is the moral compass of our society. It demands compassion, decorum, and respect for human dignity. Spreading vitriol, attacking vulnerable communities, and engaging in xenophobic rhetoric directly contradict this pillar. True Malaysian character means treating every human being with basic decency.
Furthermore, Kedaulatan Undang-Undang (Rule of Law) reminds us that order and justice must guide our actions. Addressing complex migration challenges belongs in the hands of legal, state, and international institutions. Resorting to online
vigilantism, harassment, or hate speech undermines the very rule of law we pledge to uphold.
Refugees did not choose to lose their homes; they fled documented persecution to survive. Let’s reject narratives of hate and instead stand firmly by our national pledge. By practicing the values of the Rukun Negara, we show the world the true strength, maturity, and justice of the Malaysian soul
