The Dementia Society Perak

The Dementia Society Perak The Day Care Center is now open Mondays to Fridays from 8:00am to 5:00pm with strict restrictions. V Dementia predominantly occurs after the age of 65.

Dementia is a progressive brain dysfunction (in Latin 'dementia' means irrationality), which results in a restriction of daily activities and in most cases leads to long term care. Many diseases can result in dementia, the most common one being Alzheimer's disease. The probability of suffering from dementia increases with advancing age and as people live longer, dementia is becoming more common. T

he prevalence of dementia is reported as 5% among 65 years old, and doubles every five years thereafter. The World Health Organisation estimates that 18 million people are suffering from dementia worldwide. The Alzheimer's Disease Foundation Malaysia (ADFM) estimates about 50,000 Malaysians are affected by this condition. People with dementia suffer mainly from poor memory and orientation; limitations of concentration; impaired planning, judgment, and ability to perform daily activities as well as resulting in personality changes as dementia progresses. The demands of care giving are often stressful. On the one hand The Dementia Society Perak wants to create more awareness about the disease. On the other hand we want to support people with dementia and their caregivers to improve the quality of life for everyone. The Dementia Daycare Centre was established on the 13th June 2011. It is open on Mondays to Fridays from 8:00am to 5:00pm. For clients who need transportation to the Center, we offer transport services. The Dementia Society Perak also organizes support group meetings providing opportunities for the caregivers to get together to share their pleasant and painful experiences, and support each other as they go through the journey till the last good-bye. The Dementia Care Centre, set up by the Dementia Society, also organizes short trips/ outings for the centre`s clients. The Dementia Day Care Centre

Thank you to the Rotary Club Ipoh for the chance to share about the Positive Approach to Care regarding Stress Management for Caregivers at the MH Hotel on the 18th of April 2026.

In the talk regarding stress management we managed to share with caregivers, interested ageing members of society as well as people who used to give caregiving to family members as the 5 basic needs of how to reduce stress when being a caregiver.

One of the things we shared was that Malaysia was very unique when it came to caregiving in out emphasis of food and in our culture nutritional value of the food was one of the main concerns whether we are giving good care.

One of the out comes of the event was that everyone recognized that learning more and updating out own understanding on foods rich in B12, magnesium and vitamin D affects our own sleep and health to give better care.

We also got everyone moving to understand more on how a brain reacts when under stress and why maintaining the same eye level or lower helps the person being cared for to reduce resistance in care!

Thank you very much t the Parkinson's Association Ipoh for giving our talk Awareness on Dementia and Care!

On the 10th April Friday, we managed to share with the attendees the link between Dementia and Parkinson. People living with Parkinson's have higher chances of developing Alzheimer's but that does not mean we cannot give good care if that happens.

In the session we focused a lot on the what happens to the brain when it is under stress we may lose 1 out 4 words when listening to instructions, this can affect the care of the person living with Parkinson's as they need more visual information by showing them the item we would like them to use more useful than telling them what to do.

We also had a sharing by Yeoh Chai Yen a dietician focused on eating for brain health share about on why Finger Food or eating without spoons and forks allow people living with brain change to eat better with more control and dignity by focusing on their strength instead of fingers in eating.

On the 13th of March, the Bebelec Demetia Society had a dementia workshop outreach program with KKM Taiping on changes in the brain, skills for approaching and starting conversation with people living with dementia as well as changing care approaches for different stages of dementia.

We had a mix of doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists as well as dieticians involved in the workshop who all had different input and insight when it came to their care for people living with brain changes.

One of the focus of the sessions was keeping our eye contact at the same level with the person with dementia or lower before starting conversation or a task would really help them to feel safer and reduce resistance.

We also shared about how people living with dementia might use more foul language or sharp words due to the right part of the brain being more active in dementia.

Overall, everyone shared that they walked away with the understanding of the parts of the brain that changes in dementia meant that we have to start taking a pause to see what we can change in our care instead of trying to change the person with dementia.

Thank you very much to the Rotary Club Ipoh and their President Edwin for giving us a chance to share with their society on Dementia and Why Eating is Key for Care in Dementia.

In this session we had a lot of focus on why people living with dementia have similar behavior's to an 18 month old child.

We many to share that the feeling many people living with dementia have is we the caregivers are making them feel stupid when we communicate or give care to them like children and this causes either anger or sadness.

No one likes feeling stupid in care everyone agreed that seeing and understanding how the dementia kills the brain gave them more empathy to learn different skills when it comes to dementia related care!
